See, I never found him super bland. I thought he was hilarious and had tons of quirky stuff. ALSO, here's something cool.

Spoilers for the first game!
Hiro makes a prediction that nobody will kill anyone else, and then from that point on there's not a single murder in the rest of the game. 30% of the time, he's right ALL THE TIME.

Hiro also predicts that the mother of Makoto's children will be the mother of his children, which turns out to be correct in the bad ending.

Toko is probably the biggest wildcard in the franchise because you've got UDG.

DR2 character spoilers

I think Teruteru sucks, but I think all of the other characters play off of him really well. Like, the only good part about Teruteru is that he enhances the other characters he's in a scene with. He's never funny, but certain character's reactions to him are hilarious.

Personally I liked the comic book mini-game, it had a great mesh with the story and good music.

The rest of them suck, though.

Oh yeah and theres the one in V3 with the unique music you guys are talking about. The mini-game itself is not amazing but the music and atmosphere are so good.

I have a very mixed feeling about how I rank games in this series, I think I enjoyed playing V3 > 2 > 1.

But the ending of 1 is the only one I liked, 2's ending I had mixed feelings about and V3 I just hated it even though I admit it's somewhat clever.

Anyway, 1-4 >>>> 1-1 > 1-5/6 > 1-2 > 1-3

1-4 is the only great case in the game, and 1-1 gets credit for having some neat twists. Despite being the only case where I got the murderer incorrect going into it, 1-2 is still just kinda obnoxious.

Sakura > Aoi > that's all the good characters in DR1 > Byakuya > Junko > Kyoko > Genocide Jack > Sayaka > Chihiro > Mondo > Taka > Celeste > Leon > then comes the real trash tier > Makoto > Hifumi > Yasuhiro > Toko

Okay, characters and case rankings. I completed most of the characters' supports, except for Aoi, Sakura, and Yasuhiro.

Cases:
1-5/1-6 > 1-3 > 1-1 > 1-4 > 1-2

I put 1-4 low because it's blatantly obvious from the start that Sakura killed herself. 1-2 is annoying because Byakya wastes everyone's time for no reason. I felt it was sort of impossible to separate 1-5 and 1-6. It's funny how the entire game has only two premeditated murders in it, both of which are part of 1-3.

Characters:
Kyoko > Aoi > Byakuya > Sakura > "Junko" > Junko > Toko > Celeste > Taka > Mondo > Yasuhiro > Alter Ego > Sayaka > Chihiro > Leon > Hifumi

It's weird. I wouldn't say I particularly loved any of the characters? Like, I don't especially like Aoi or Byakuya, but they ended up in my top five, as did "Junko," who's there mainly just because she has the best facial expressions in the game. Even Kyoko, who's my #1, I wouldn't call a great character. It's a testament to how blah some of these characters are that Byakuya "Frame Toko for Murder for Literally No Reason" Togami gets into the top three. I don't know, I guess if you really like goth lolis, I can imagine Celeste being higher.

I really like the idea of Junko's despair ideal, but Junko herself was strongest when she had the bored expression on. I would have liked her more if she'd always been in like 'bored, barely attentive' mode instead of switching between her wacky personalities the way she did. When she introduced herself with the British queen persona, I thought I was going to hate her.

I can't really justify having Aoi high and Yasuhiro low, given that they're both just sort of normal. I guess I was just disappointed in Yasuhiro. I recognized Aoi as being genuine early on, but I was convinced the whole game that Yasuhiro was going to be the mastermind or the spy, and when he turned out to be exactly what he seemed to be, I don't know, it was just kind of boring. By the way, Yasuhiro was my only misfire on guessing the mysteries, I got basically everything else right.

I also kept expecting Yasuhiro to be a killer at some point.

I think the thing is that he is obviously much worse than all the "protagonist" characters but this is probably a case of "Japanese think something is funny and Westerns don't". They probably kept him for comic relief value.

Looking at Wikipedia, there are three spinoff games, plus the anime. I can just ignore all of those unless I'm a big Toko fan, then?

I'll probably start D2 sometime this week. I occasionally do this where I just blow through long games in a few days. I've been doing it more during covid because I have nothing else of value to do. B8's favorite games have been directing me a little in this, obviously, which is why I chose Danganronpa.

The anime is fairly mediocre but it's arguably the only way to get closure for DR2's plot since V3 is kind of an independent thing.

It has some very good episodes, some very bad ones and a lot of mediocre ones. Depends on your patience for watching 24 episodes of "meh" and how much you wanna see the end of the story.

I don't like Hifumi by any means but I found him to be much more tolerable than Toko or Hiro. He's kind of just... there. While the other two actively make the game worse by existing.

By the way, extremely stupid note: the Steam banner for Danganronpa has most of the characters visible. There's a character behind Chihiro whose hair and body can't be seen, so I couldn't tell who it was because of the strange expression. I thought it was some secret character who might be revealed later on... but I just looked at the banner again and realized it's just Leon. Like, tell me this looks like Leon, this looks like a totally different person.

By the way, why omit Sakura? Or is she in that tiny space between Aoi, Toko, and Byakuya? ... And why the hell would you give Aoi so much space, she gets almost as much as Makoto.

• Usami: Not sure what I think of her. Obviously she'll have a connection to Monokuma, though.
• Hajime and Nagito: Obviously both are suspiciously similar to Makoto. Nagito is giving me serious "this guy either dies early or is extremely evil" vibes, but Hajime saying he's probably been through trauma means Nagito likely won't die until his secret past is revealed (this is obviously how I knew Kyoko couldn't die early in the first game). I also note that despite how many characters map to first game characters, Nagito's role as the guy who tells you stuff had no equivalent in the first game. I can easily imagine either of them being behind everything. Between these two, Byakuya, the increased attention on the video game-y elements, and the opening, we're in definite MGS2 "simulation of the first game" territory, though I'm not sure where this is going.
• Byakuya: Yeah, I figured he was just Byakuya. Not sure where this will go, or why he's fat now, but I'm curious. Like Nagito, probably won't die until we get an explanation, but it could happen if they want to give us a shock. Giving him a minimal chance of early death, but moderate chance of being a killer. Zero chance of surviving the game.
• Hiyoko: My instinct says she's not behind everything, but obviously her cutesy personality is a sham. Looks vaguely like Junko and has a similar skill, but I get more of a Toko vibe from her, but with the opposite personality. Probably hiding something. No chance of early death, moderate chance of being a killer, zero chance of being behind everything, zero chance of surviving the game.
• Akane: Obviously looks just like Aoi and has a similar skill, can't be a coincidence. Like before, we're in MGS2 territory. I don't get a "behind everything" vibe, but Aoi turned out to be innocent, so her doppelganger here might be evil. "She's got the physique of an Olympic athlete." Sorry, pal, Olympic athletes tend not to have such large... tracks of land. Low chance of early death, high chance of being a killer, zero chance of surviving the game.
• Fuyuhiko: ... Do yazukas even go to school? I guess it doesn't matter. No impressions of him except that he has a high chance of early death, low chance of being a killer. Doesn't have an obvious first game character he maps to. Zero chance of survival.
• Mahiru: No obvious first game character to map her to, except Aoi and Yasuhiro in the sense of being normal. Is a little demanding. Low waifu rating, nearly 100% chance of early death, being a killer, or being killed by Usami to show that you can't break the rules. Some chance of surviving the game.
• Nekomaru: Doesn't... neko mean cat? I am certain my friend in high school named his cat Neko. I mistook him for being another biker at first. Seems nice enough, but not much mystery here. Takes control of the situation too much for the story to allow, given our protagonist has to be the hero. Nearly 100% chance of early death, being a killer, or being killed by Usami to show the stakes. Zero chance of surviving the game.
• Mikan: Extremely annoying, I hate this kind of "sorry sorry" girl. No obvious character from the first game she maps to. Possibly not faking her personality, but possibly is. 100% chance she dies early on or is hiding something serious. Low chance of surviving the game.
• Ibuki: Maps to Sayaka. Because Sayaka died early, she probably won't. Either she's behind everything, she'll be a killer late in the game, or she survives. I did enjoy her pointing while screaming "POINTING!" Highest waifu rating of anyone.
• Kazuichi: Way too carefree given that we already have Nagito filling that role. Face looks like Leon, but has a different skill that doesn't map to anyone from the first game. Because he's so obviously a potential suspect, I think he might not be a killer in the end. Moderate chance of surviving the game, low chance of being a killer, high chance of being a victim or early death, zero chance of being behind everything.
• Gundham: Heterochromia. Pegged him as the Ultimate Ninja, got worried when the game called him the Ultimate Breeder, got relieved when he showed the hamsters. Zero chance of surviving the game, high chance of being a killer or victim, high chance of early death, low chance of being behind everything.
• Peko: Maps to Sakura. Sakura was noble, so Peko may be evil. Moderate chance of being a killer, low chance of early death, low chance of being behind everything, moderate chance of surviving.
• Chiaki: No obvious character she maps to. Moderate waifu score. Moderate chance of being a killer, low chance of early death. Due to the increased focus on video game-y elements in this opening, giving her an extremely high chance of secretly being behind everything.
• Teruteru: Maps to Hijumi. Different artstyle than everyone else, not sure what to make of that. Not the personality you expect from a chef, whereas everyone else has basically predictable personalities given their powers. Low chance of being behind everything, but I can't peg his chances of anything else. Definite wildcard, but if I had to guess, I'd say early victim.
• Sonia: Clearly maps to Celeste. Bizarre last name, probably significant. Zero chance of being a killer, zero chance of surviving, extremely high chance of being behind everything or being an early victim. "Ultimate Princess," hm. That means you'd have, like, dozens of rival princesses throughout the rest of the world, whereas I assume there are millions of gamers, chefs, etc, you have to be better than.

On one hand this is so hard for me to imagine doing when it's a mystery and, at least to me, the whole point is to see how quickly you can figure everything out. On the other, just taking everything as it comes must be one hell of a rollercoaster with this series sometimes.

I've never once made an attempt to puzzle out a mystery game ahead of time. To me the best feeling is being hit with a left hook out of nowhere.

I mean fuck, if I refuse to take notes for Umineko you can be damn sure I didn't for Danganronpa, lol.

As an aside, although I said many characters have a zero percent chance of survival, I acknowledge that there is a high chance that everything will be a Matrix-style simulation and everyone survives, or something like that. I mean, it's basically certain that this is a Matrix simulation, but I don't know how the survival will factor into things, so we'll see.

As for the mystery of the protagonist, I'm gonna throw out there a small chance that he's actually an AI or something and isn't really a student.

Part of it is that I'm not very savvy. If I tried to predict, I would be flat-out wrong most of the time. I've only predicted the killer correctly in four cases, and three of those felt blatantly obvious. (1-1, 1-3, and 2-3. I legit figured out 3-2.) Even in those cases, I still got blindsided by details. Most of the time I see ~60% of the case clearly going in, but still never lock onto the correct culprit. So yeah, it's easier just to roll with the punches and let myself be surprised. It's led me to fully absorb the shock of some of the biggest reveals in the game.

Given how much insight Anagram has toward the characters and the scenario -- correct or not -- it's obvious he's at the other end of the spectrum.

To azuarc (DR3 spoilers): 3-2 is the ONLY case in the entire franchise where I played through it and was legitimately thinking..."I have no idea who did this. You've presented me all the evidence, and I have no fucking clue."

That's kinda funny. I'm trying to decide if I actually could claim I figured any of these other cases out, and I think in each I had enough of the main details left out (or in 2-2's case, simply hadn't recognized the way they were now writing the cases yet) to not be able to take any credit whatsoever. Some of the cases absolutely floored me. 3-1 best case, and simultaneously worst case, ever.
