my dad had on Hellraiser when i was a kid and i walked in at the wrong time and little 5 year old zen was scarred for life

I think it came to mind because it was like the first ghost movie I'd seen, and afterwards I would sometimes get nervous that there were ghosts watching me that I couldn't see.

Other worthy examples include The Shining, It Follows (this would likely be my proper first instinct: that premise is one of the most dreadful things imaginable), The Haunting (60's, of course), Suspiria (2018, though it might veer more disturbing than scary, per se).

The Exorcist.

As scary as it still is today, this is the one movie that I really wished I could have seen in its initial release. Sounds like it was f***ing crazy.

I don't think anyone should be criticizing themselves for picking Scream, though. The opening scene is still legitimately terrifying.
