The FBI says it thwarted what it described as a plot to violently overthrow the government and kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and federal prosecutors are expected to discuss the alleged conspiracy later Thursday.
The alleged plot involved reaching out to members of a Michigan militia, according to a federal affidavit filed Thursday.

The court filing also alleges the conspirators twice conducted surveillance at Whitmer's personal vacation home and discussed kidnapping her to a "secure location" in Wisconsin to stand "trial" for treason prior to the Nov. 3 election.
"Several members talked about murdering 'tyrants' or 'taking' a sitting governor," an FBI agent wrote in the affidavit. "The group decided they needed to increase their numbers and encouraged each other to talk to their neighbors and spread their message."

Over the weekend of July 10-12, 2020, FOX, CROFT, GARBIN, FRANKS, CASERTA, CHS-2, and others attended a FTX in Cambria, Wisconsin. Attendees participated in firearms training and other combat drills. On July 11, at the exercise, CROFT and a member of the militia group attempted to construct an improvised explosive device (IED), using black powder, balloons, a fuse, and BBs for shrapnel. CROFT, GARBIN and the militia group member attempted to make a second IED using similar components. The construction of the devices was faulty, and they did not detonate as planned. CHS-2 provided FBI with video of the event.

On July 18, 2020, GARBIN, FOX, CROFT, HARRIS, FRANKS, CHS-2, and other individuals met in Ohio. CHS-2 provided the FBI with an audio recording of the meeting. The attendees discussed attacking a Michigan State Police facility, and in a separate conversation after the meeting, GARBIN suggested shooting up the Governors vacation home, which is located in the Western District of Michigan (the vacation home.) The same day, GARBIN told CHS-2 and others that he did not want to go after the Capitol. He said he was cool with going after the Governors vacation home, however, even if it only resulted in destruction of property.

On July 27, 2020, CHS-2 met FOX at his business in Grand Rapids. CHS-2 provided the FBI with an audio recording of the meeting. FOX said their best opportunity to abduct Governor Whitmer would be when she was arriving at, or leaving, either her personal vacation home or the Governors official summer residence. Both residences are located in the Western District of Michigan. FOX described it as a Snatch and grab, man. Grab the fuckin Governor. Just grab the bitch. Because at that point, we do that, dude -- its over. FOX said that after kidnapping the Governor, the group would remove her to a secure location in Wisconsin for trial. FOX suggested they get a realtor to help them find the exact location of the vacation home and collect information on the surrounding homes and structures. FOX discussed the importance of knowing the layout of the yard, homes, and security. FOX stated they needed to map out the surrounding property and gates, and they needed plumbers and electricians to help them read blueprints to refine their strategy. FOX also suggested recruiting an engineer or IT [Information Technology] guy, a demo guy, and other operators.

On August 9, 2020, FOX, GARBIN, HARRIS, FRANKS, and CHS-2 participated in a tactical training in Munith, Michigan. CHS-2 provided the FBI with an audio recording of the training. FOX asked the group about kidnapping Governor Whitmer. According to CHS-2, GARBIN initially expressed reluctance to talk about the plan in that setting. After the training, FOX, CHS-2, and others participated in a group call that was recorded by CHS-2. FOX suggested another member of the militia group could gather information about Governor Whitmers primary residence in Lansing, and FOX discussed destroying the Governors boat. After the call, FOX, FRANKS, GARBIN, HARRIS, and CHS-2 communicated in an encrypted group chat. In that chat, HARRIS stated, Have one person go to her house. Knock on the door and when she answers it just cap her . . . at this point. Fuck it. He added, I mean . . . fuck, catch her walking into the building and act like a passers-by and fixing dome her then yourself whoever does it. (sic). In a follow-up chat about the plan, FRANKS told CHS-2, OK sounds good Im in for anything as long as its well planned.

Considering the "plot" was a handful of people in a basement, probably not the most intimidating thing in the world. Meanwhile anti-government protests and attacks are happening on Michigan's streets while its government does little or nothing to stop them. If Michigan was as proactive about policing its streets as it is about arresting cranks, they'd have restored order months ago. But sure, it was probably for the best to arrest these crackpots. Even though they likely posed zero danger, you can't give the appearance of lawlessness because that just encourages more lawless behavior... as we've seen with the riots.

And when you look at the story, it's goofy as hell. It reads more like a comedy mocking militia groups than an actual militia group:
"FBI and state police executed the arrests of several of the conspirators when they were meeting on the east side of the state to pool funds for explosives and exchange tactical gear, Birge said Thursday."

Except they really haven't. Almost every militia arrest has involved a "plan," "plot," or "threat" of some kind. Offhand, I can't recall the last time there was a militia attack. The closest you got was the armed protests where they were illegally occupying places, which is nothing compared to protests that have damaged police stations and injured officers.

Clearly they weren't the best and brightest, which is why they likely never posed any real danger in the first place even if they had the balls to go through with their talk -- which they almost certainly didn't because, if they did, they would have just done it. It's depressingly easy to kill a governor or other sitting politician and it's something of a miracle that it doesn't happen more often.

On the plus side, most of these guys probably need professional help and hopefully they'll be able to get it now.

He's saying the 2A is responsible for this "militia" having access to guns, I think. Problem is, he's making the tired mistake of confusing the layman terms "militia" with the capitalized, very specific term in the Constistution, "Militia." As in, "state militia." Random dumbasses with guns calling themselves a militia is NOT the same as a state militia, which the Constitution backs (and state militias are all but defunct these days, essentially replaced by the National Guard).

Considering it was big enough for the FBI to monitor and step in, I'm gonna go ahead and say "nah dawg." But it's a bit telling that you instantly pivot to the non-existent threat of "anti-government" protesters. One would think that basic intelligence dictates that if one was worth of the FBI's attention and action, and the other, openly in the streets, isn't, then you're making a very horrible and disgraceful false equivalency.

It's been a tired tactic of conservatives for nearly 3 decades now to try and paint the Left as just as terrible as they are, but no one outside of conservatives buy it.
