Every gen thus far I've gotten both Nintendo and (once PS1 existed) Sony consoles, and played maybe 1% of the time on PC

Next gen looks bleak as shit.
Apparently I'm PC and Nintendo from now on, MS and Sony are unappealing as hell to me next gen.
This is gonna be an adjustment...

At the moment Im leaning towards Xbox simply because game pass is such an incredible deal

playstation has without a doubt had better exclusive games this gen but I figure those will all be waiting for me when I eventually get a ps5 down the road

I'd rather upgrade to an RTX 3070

Given that my ps4 is still sitting in its box, I probably shouldn't be thinking about a ps5 although, if I get another console, it'll likely be that. However, it's not going to be until the pricing gets better.

I had gotten it on the Wii U. Actually, I broke my rule with the Wii U and let BotW be the deciding factor back when the Switch wasn't even a thing. Then I got the system, got the other games, and eventually BotW came out on both systems like TP had done with GC and Wii. As a result, my minimum for the Switch is higher than normal for consoles, and the Switch hasn't even reached the norm for me.

Octopath was on the list, but then it came out on Steam. Metroid Prime 4 is sort of on the list, but it's so far only a title and thus doesn't count. I can think of nothing else I want on the Switch, making it the first Nintendo system I'll probably not pick up unless my boyfriend (for whatever reason) gives me his, which I wouldn't let him.

I have yet to get any Xbox.

I have yet to turn down a Playstation, even if it takes one or two years into its life. Yeah, I finally get one, usually, around the time Sony teases the next system.

Definitely passing on it for now. My PS4 has mostly been a MGSV machine and a dust collector.

I've always waited for the slim version of a PS console, too. But...
I wonder if the slim will even come w/ a disc drive?
Sony and MS seem to intend to kill physical media, it's impossible to play w/ discs next gen w/o dropping $500 (at launch, I mean). They even had a chance to undercut MS and opted not to, not by even 1 cent.
Both companies clearly wanted to make sure to heavily price-gate physical gaming.
Putting out a cheaper model w/ the disc drive would completely undermine those efforts to push for an all-digital future.

Learning toward PS5. Just can't decide if I want it at launch or not. Demon's Souls is awfully tempting.

With that said, I may get an XSX first due to Xbox All Access. Usually I wouldn't finance a game console, but the price evens out due to it including Game Pass. So you're not paying extra.

PS5 because I'll just play multiplatform games on my PC.

All-digital allows them to cut out production costs and retail middlemen without having to realistically lower prices, which allows them to make more profit off a single sale. It also makes used game sales almost impossible, which in turn means you have to pay the publisher directly if you ever want to play the game.

The console manufacturers don't really have a horse in that particular fight. They're mostly just going along with it as accomplices because they have a vested interest in keeping publishers happy.

PS5, but I'll wait a while because I don't like adopting early, and there won't be all that many games worth playing at launch as far as I'm concerned. Once a couple games I want to play have been released (and after a few more months so those games can be patched, because most games seem to release hopelessly broken these days), I'll probably pick one up.

Right now I have zero interest in the Xbox, but if they manage to release at least 2-3 games at some point that I'm interested in I might pick it up as well. I'm not a teenager using part-time job money or a younger kid begging his parents for a game console at Christmas, so I can afford to buy every console in a given generation if I want. But I'm not going to buy them just to own one, they still have to do something to draw my interest.

The big sticking point for me this gen was that Xbox's core must-have killer ap was Halo... and Halo's kind of been shit since Bungie left and 343 took over. So it doesn't really help sell me on the new consoles the way it did the original Xbox and 360.

True. Though, since I'm getting less, I would want it to cost less... I mean, since it's no physical, I can do less with my game. Which to me makes it seem like it should cost less...

Yeah, but foot-in-the-door, frog-in-the-pot, etc etc.

Basically, once they've convinced you that $60 is the standard price for a game, they can sort of get away with charging the same price for digital and not necessarily sell digital for cheaper. Even now, you'll notice that a lot of games sell for basically the same price digital as they do physical (they'll occasionally use "Oh, we're not allowed to undercut physical media sellers" to justify it, but that's not really the reason at all. And they'll just find another excuse if that one stops being viable).

And that's before we get into things like deluxe editions, season passes, DLC, microtransactions, and other forms of extended payment that disguise the "real" cost of the game you're playing even more. If you pay $60 for a game but wind up investing another $100 into it before you're done, it's not really a $60 game.

Imma just about gonna get a ps5 for free lolz.

I plan to sell my ps4 pro since the 5 is backwards comp, but I ain't about to buy the CD version for $100 more buckarooos....which means......selling all my ps4 games as well.

I hope to get $200-250 for the ps4 pro, and then even at $10 a game for Horizon (game of the year edition), Persona 5, ratchet and clank, Dragon Quest Builders, Spiderman, Bloodborne (sadly the DLC is on my system/account),Nier automata, FFXII, Star ocean,rush of blood, World of final fantasy, .hack GU, Yokia-lalee, Kingdom hearts 1.5/2.5, Assassins creed oddysey, Guitar hero Live (with the guitar) and a few more.

If I can sell em for just $10 each + 250 for the PS4 pro (currently going used for about $300), that is the full $400 for the ps5, and I won't really miss any of those games.

With physical, there's material and production costs (putting it on the disc), there's transportation costs, and there's a middle man (store) that gets a cut of the sale.
With digital, the first 2 no longer exist and Sony/MS *is* the store.
Both have to release for the same price, $60....err....$70.
Sony and MS absolutely make more profit off a full priced digital sale than a physical one. And that's ignoring the "nuissance" (to them) of the used game market, which nets them no profit on a sale (and which MS infamously tried to "rectify" this gen). They absolutely would love to see physical game sales die, the only reason they don't just strangle it outright themselves is fear of customer backlash. Overpricing the consoles w/ disc drives to push people to digital is a more subtle form of the same tactic as Xbone's attempted used game resale surcharge, and they are at least as eager for the death of physical as the 3rd party studios.

It's foolhardy and will be a Pyrrhic victory, though. Once physical is gone, they've obsoleted themselves compared to just getting a PC.

Well, maybe. Though, if they decide to keep exclusives, that would still be a reason. Though, thats only if they can keep the exclusives and keep the company afloat... Since both companies sell more than just gaming consoles, they could easily stay afloat... If anything, Id just be a full Nintendo player instead of switching to PC, though...

Also, this reminds of something from another conversation. The UBI one. People said that if the people selling stuff could make the stuff for cheap, they would sell it cheaper. I figured theyd sell stuff at the same price to get a bigger profit. In this case, looks like my theory was right. At least, so far. The cost of the games for the company goes way down with without having to get the discs or cases for the game, and not having to ship it. But they still seem to be selling it for the same price (or possibly more) than the physical copies. Things could change. But theres not reason to anything soon. Like PO said, people are use to games being this price (+DLC and other stuff). So, why make it cheaper if you dont have to?

Long as I can use a controller in the future and dont need to UG hardware/manage the console like a PC, Im good. Cant stand the compatibility issues PCs have. Missing .dll files, sound wont play on X speakers etc. I plug my Xbox in, install the disc and she works.

My next console will be a switch.

I might get a PS5 in a few years when the price comes down.

I have zero interest in the xbox. I barely played my 360 and most of gaming on the original was halo, which I just played because my friends liked it, I never owned it.
