Aladdin was pretty decent, and while Will Smith did a decent job his singing felt held down compared to the original...plus once again all creativity and magic has to be dumbed down due to realistic setting. In that regard I guess Beauty and the beast and jungle book were much more successful....with jungle book being my favorite. Jungle Book was justifiable, I wouldn't say good, because at least the original movie wasn't all that great to begin with so they had plenty of room to improve upon it. Mulan 2020 also seems justifiable, not necessarily good. Cinderella apparently wasn't bad. The Jungle Book remake was pretty good. Remaking Disney renaissance movies is where they've gone wrong, because they're still pretty recent in the cultural memory. The Lion King didn't need a remake. Beauty and the Beast didn't need a remake. Both of them look worse than the original movies, and they rehash the original material poorly. Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White are older properties, and they profit from a reintroduction to modern audiences. But there's a second, bigger issue that's marring these movies - Disney is basically revising each movie to address meaningless nitpicks. Dumbo is an older property which could benefit from a new coat of paint, but the new movie addresses animal cruelty in the circus and they reference Dumbo getting drunk with a bubble show and by Danny DeVito specifically saying "no champagne for the baby". Any ounce of edge or understated emotional maturity is gone. It's in line with Beauty and the Beast, where Belle is an outsider because she's a reader and an inventor and the close-minded villagers want to trample all over her dreams. So at this point, it doesn't matter what the property is - it's going to be wringed out into a soulless product made for the CinemaSins crowd, with passive-progressive aspects that don't appeal to actual progressive values and which mar the entire experience for everyone. --- There are no pan-asian supermarkets down in hell, so you can't buy Golden Boy peanuts.
