They're both essentially the same issue (abusing the powers of his office to help himself get reelected). This one is particularly gross due to how his admin is actually grinding the citizenship process to a halt (I believe I read yesterday that an estimated 300k would-be citizens will probably be disenfranchised in this election due to Trump slowrolling the ceremonies).

He's a murderer, not a kid. He doesn't get that status anymore, even if still technically a "minor".

I didn't include it when I first posted about this incident this morning because it hadn't made either NYT or WaPo at the time (they've since been updated) but even then I had been reading from more local writers and of course all the social media reports and videos that the police had been thanking and giving water to the militia group prior to the incident, told them they were going to push the protesters towards them because they could handle them, and in the immediate aftermath of the shooting when protesters were pointing the guy out to the police and saying he shot someone they just went right by him and told him to leave and continued towards the protesters despite him apparently trying to surrender even.

Sadly none of this is surprising.

A part of me is actually glad that the masks have come off this much. Remember when this festering hatred and racism was completely dog-whistled and concealed away? Improving ourselves as a country is never a short and simple endeavor, but I think more transparently seeing these bigots for what they are will ultimately help.

I don't think so. There's always been a ton of bigotry in America. I've felt it as a minority since childhood, and I can sometimes KINDA SORTA PASS AS WHITE. The seemingly endless throng of loudmouths on social media these days are just a tiny percentage of the whole.

But anytime between then and now I would listen to arguments about how it receded and then re-ignited.

Believe me, I dont underestimate that. I understand how white supremacists use the internet to spread their influence

But also you have to take into account that a lot of the people they are recruiting are in other countries also so they wouldnt technically count for this

I think it's a mix of both. You can see a lot of these fringe movements (e.g. gamergate, QAnon, incels, whatever) pulling in a ton of people who I'm sure sucked before that, but who might never have gotten that bad without these movements. I don't see why the same wouldn't be true with racism just because it's way less fringe to begin with.

I think it's a matter of degree. I don't think it's a matter of non-racists turning into racists as much as somewhat racist people being extremized to become very racist.

Theres a problem with this thinking that you can't influence people one or another. Maybe someone was a little racist. With some education, you could make them not racist. Or conversely, radicalize the heck out of them.
