It seems like every single opportunity they have, they plug Premium. I actually had to block the ads promoting Premium because I got them 10+ times a day.

My irritation with ads has always been the unwanted usage of my data plan to serve them.

You want to push them on your dime, ok. You want to actually cost me money to watch them? You can fuck right the hell off.

How exactly do we block ads on our phone anyway? Do we have to use a special version of the YT app? Because when I try to run it in brower, it just seems to pull up the app.

Tons of content producers have mentioned that ad revenue is way down during the pandemic (and was dropping even before that), to the point where it's almost becoming borderline untenable to produce professional content for YouTube at all. Multiple channels have mentioned that the only reason they still exist at all is that they're able to support themselves via Patreon. I've heard numbers that imply revenue is down something like 40% from what it was 6 months ago.

YouTube might be pushing premium hard just because they've finally realized how badly they've fucked everything up, and are trying to salvage something out of the mess to keep paying for their own servers.

I don't get them as much. But a lot of the recent content I've been watching has sponsors. So, I guess no ads...

As for the ads, I don't care much. There are the 15 second ones that you can skip after 5 seconds. And then the 5 second ones that end...

As for the ones pushing premium, I don't get those ads. I do get a little thing in the corner of my screen asking if I want it, though...

Ads are only likely to get less and less effective over time so they are gonna pay less and less until relying on ads isn't feasible. Seems like patreon styled monetization where people pay as much as they want is the future but who knows how well that'll work on a wide scale. I guess it's kept wikipedia afloat for a long time.

if ads happen in the video, i refresh and skip to where i was.

On a tangent Youtubers are too incompetent to form a strong union and stand up for the community even though they easily could. They'd rather bitch about problems uselessly for that drama. There are platforms like lbry that exist as a response to Youtube's monopoly and they're completely ignored. They were made as a response to Youtube's monopoly.

I just wish the ads would listen to me saying "NOT INTRESTED" to the topics it spams me with.
If I've reported, according to your own ad settings page, an ad 60+ times for being irrelevant, why are you still spamming me with it?
Give me ads that aren't about topics I hate, and I'll probably just let it play (unless I'm not in the mood or it is long).

It actually might, though. Lots of podcast also use it. I mean, even for $1 a month you can do it. And with only a couple thousand people using it, thats still a couple thousand a month. And some do more than $1. Its seems to be working. And has been for years for some people...

That also means wikipedia has to pay for billions of people using the website. I think the idea of do youtube for free because you like it until you have a large enough following to be supported by patreon is a fine model and as a viewer results in much better content cause you no longer need to give a fuck if it's advertiser friendly. I think on average it means you can make a modest living if you reach about 250k subs.

Of course the obvious problem there is youtube gets no money but I'm not sure what they can really do about it. It's probably worth it for google to just take the loss to be in control of the #1 video platform. It's not like they are hurting for money.

Ive seen so little ads on YT and other sites for years when the odd one slips through I almost dont even care to find the filter to add to whatever add block program. If I am using YT on my phone and an ad pops up, Ive seen so little ads it doesn't even bother me when I have to see one.
