My parents aren't that way but my grandmother absolutely is, so I feel you. I've also had run-ins online with people who I thought the world of while I was in school and have come to realize they have some less than desirable views and traits so that I don't quite view them so highly anymore. It's a sucky thing to have to realize.

well, i was responding to the "he doesn't even pretend to believe it" part. pretty sure he at least SOMETIMES pretends to believe it (given that he has indeed taken both sides on 90% of the issues). no idea what he actually thinks about trickle down economics.

He can think Reagan was a great president without agreeing with all of his policies. I would say his statements that are consistent with the trickle down theory are vanishingly rare and his statements that are inconsistent with it are too numerous to count. He constantly talks as if the government, and specifically, the President, is responsible for economic growth or decline. That's a command economy consistent with a Communist state; it's the complete antithesis of laissez-faire trickle down economics.

Also, I don't remember Trump praising Reagan much (I actually can't remember him doing it). The only Presidents I can recall him saying good things about are himself, Lincoln, and the founding fathers. His usual thing is to portray himself as Lincoln's successor, and remember that Lincoln was out of vogue in the GOP for a long time before Trump due to their policies going out of alignment with his.

SephG makes a good point, this board seems to be pretty complicit in the public shaming of people for a lot tamer things than stripey's parents have said. Why shouldn't they be publicly shamed the same as someone who posts a picture of a watermelon

I've completely cut off contact with my stepfather and mother and their sides of the family for very similar reasons. Regular racial slurs and even so far as saying them in front of friends/girlfriends of mine of that race.

Almost all the kids have cut off contact as we've moved into adulthood, actually. A couple years ago I'd still drop by to see my younger brother but after he passed away I have no reason to see them.

Oddly enough my bio dad's family is super cool and supportive despite his virtual nonexistence in my life.

I agree that being a racist but caring parent is way more unforgivable than being a deadbeat but non-racist parent. You really still need to out them publicly.

Having experienced more than one ex gf (why they're ex's) trying to change me into somebody I'm not (dress this way, get a better car, etc, etc) it only builds resentment. As long as they're not openly expressing these sentiments loudly in public then why try and change them? But I guess we're supposed to all subscribe to the hive mind and 'right speak' nowadays and not have any independent thoughts.

Not saying their thoughts are right but they are theirs and they are allowed to have them.

Reminder that Santa, when trying to defend the FChamp/watermelon thing, ended up going "Oh I legit forgot about the racial connotations with watermelon, I'm dumb, that's my bad, ignore everything I said."

Apparently he's decided to walk that back to be a dick again for no real reason. But either way, not worth paying attention to when he gets like this.

I was never taught why watermelons were racist symbols, just that they were. Slavery was mostly taught in the context of massive cotton plantations and human rights abuses.

He's criticizing Reagan. He says he wasn't good on trade.

He was also daring enough to criticize GWB at a Republican debate, saying that the Iraq war was a disaster.

Yes, he appears to hold Reagan in higher regard than Obama. But that's sort of part and parcel of being a Republican.
