Im just going to get up on this soap box real quick.

I had the first real talk with my parents about, well, the happenings in the world. Honestly our conversations are usually just about work or what we are doing the upcoming weekend. Theres a love between us, but weve never seen eye to eye on some really core issues in regards to humanity and that has always divided us.

My sister has been away from my parents for about 5 years now, and its been both nice and sad to see my sister come to the same slow realization like I had when I moved a away.

They are awful people. Theyve become so proudly racists, homophobic and judgmental.

Its hard coming to terms with the fact that people that you know have good in them, can also be so vile. I know thats the cliche of every story about human nature, but it is a bitch to happen in real life. Its like a cognitive disconnect I cant process.

Are they actually awful people?

Someone can be racist which is bad but if they still treat everyone with respect regardless of who they are I wouldn't say they were an awful person.

A lot of these people just have deep-rooted prejudices from the time they grew up in. This is less important than how they act to others imo

Or you can have conversations with them in the hopes that they'll change for the better (unlikely the older you are, but not impossible). My parents were homophobic when I was a kid but wound up voting against Prop 8 (and thus, in support of gay marriage) in California in 2008. People can change.

People naturally get more conservative as they age (generally speaking). Often it has something to do with dealing with plenty in their life, and they just want to be left alone and relax now that they are old. So when they are always seeing news telling them things are bad, blaming them, and asking them to change, they feel like they've had enough of it and the people involved which can lead to over the top points of views that they never had when they were younger (many of these people were involved in the free love era, which says a lot).

I basically dont interact with one side of my family anymore if at all possible. It helps that I work all weekend which is when they always have any sort of get-togethers. Once my dad dies I will probably have no connection to them any longer. The other side is borderline, my girl cousins are the only ones on that side that arent outspoken with bullshit beliefs, but they might just be smart enough to not say those things publicly. The rest are tolerable, nothing truly repugnant like on the other side of the family. My brother and sister are the only ones I am really okay with.

I dont think racism is an inherently generational thing though. I think a lot of it is to do with culture and what we are exposed to.

It doesn't matter. Racism will exist forever unless we call it out and publicly shame people for their thoughts and words. No second chances.

My mom's stuff has been more disappointing than anything. Not outwardly racist, but typical middle aged Facebook mom nonsense about how talking about society's problems is the real problem. She's smart but often just stays willfully ignorant on some things (she only found out about the Catholic Church scandal like a year or two ago and I don't think she believes it)

Better than my cousin and uncle though, who go on Facebook to call Obama a corrupt n***** and talk about radical Muslims

Your dad understands the old Republican Party under Bush extremely well. But if they were working class at the time, it's not surprising they didn't buy the BS about trickle down economics.

He does not believe it. He doesn't even pretend to believe it. His deal is to take from the upper middle class and redistribute that wealth 80% to the rich and 20% to the lower middle class. And you know what? That deal is vastly better than anything the Democrats are offering. Because they aren't offering any wealth redistribution at all.
