In addition to watching Twin Angel, I also want to start one more show. I can't decide between Gunslinger Girl, which I've had on my plan-to-watch for years but never got around to, or Persona 5: The Animation, which just recently had its dub added to Funimation. So I wanted to ask you guys which one I should watch. Keep in mind that I have absolutely no intention of ever buying/playing the Persona 5 game itself (I don't have $60 and 100+ hours of my life to spare on it) so "play the game instead" will be ignored even if the game really is a better experience.

The Hat in Time Switch version is a little unfortunate. The loading times are horrendous and the game just crashed on me on one of the loading screens. I'll put up with it for now, but if it gets much worse I may have to just play it on the PC when I get a gaming computer.

Apparently, Cardfight Vanguard IF got picked up by Crunchyroll yesterday, so we get better video/subtitle quality now compared to Youtube. Plus, new episodes now come out on Friday nights instead of Saturday mornings, so I decided to throw this together:

https://i.imgur.com/F3T6Eqs.png

As for this week's episode... @legendarylemur can you please explain to me what the fuck just happened? Because I feel like things just escalated very quickly. What I was able to piece together is that Aichi, the protagonist of the main CFVG series, is the villain in this series now because his destiny was changed by Shuka (by her accidentally preventing him from meeting Kai and getting Blaster Blade) way before this all started.

https://i.imgur.com/KwCF02j.gif

This moment was badass though.
I'm definitely going to have to watch the main CFVG series at some point.

Yeah, that's another thing I'm concerned about. I don't know how violent the series is, and although I heard the girls are supposed to be cyborgs, I don't know how much of them is still human. A totally robotic arm being shot off would be a lot easier for me to deal with than one that's mostly still flesh and blood. If someone who's seen it before can reassure me that it's not too gory for me, then I'm leaning towards watching it next over Persona. But if I can't get that confirmation (or if someone confirms that it is too gory for me) then I'll go with Persona instead.

I'm a few eps bh but yeah as a kid, Aichi got bullied often, and Kai gave Aichi his Blaster Blade to cheer him up. Few years later, Aichi would slowly build his deck around Blaster Blade so that when he meets Kai, he can thank Kai for giving him hope by showing him that he can be independent and all that. Their friendship was pretty key to Aichi's character development, and as expected fujoshis took this as love and drew all sorts of heinous godless arts.

For Vanguard, I recommend watching the original series and then Shin's series, the one that aired before IF. The original series is kinda excessively long. I'd probably search for a viewing guide of sorts, as Aichi spends a large majority of the early bits losing til he grows. Great for character development and becomes a bit of a badass by season 3, which is the best season, so depends on what you want. They're all available for free on their own channel, both dub and sub

I decided to do more research into the CFVG franchise. Between how stupidly long the original timeline is (196 episodes and a movie for the original series, 175 episodes for G) and what I read about how IF appears to be more closely tied to the reboot timeline than the original timeline, I think I'll just watch the reboot instead. It's still fairly long at 97 episodes, but that's far more manageable than 371 episodes.

Yeah the reboot is good too, but I think generally people like the original far better. IF does have ties to the reboot, but you won't feel lost if you watch the original. It's all the same characters and the same arcs and everything with minor (but crucial imo) differences. However, the length might definitely be a huge factor for choosing the reboot. I watched this as it came out so it wasn't as bad for me.

Hit the half way mark in Cardcaptor Sakura. It isn't anything amazing but I'm never really bored when watching it. The hand-drawn art is also always nice to look at. Going to be the longest TV anime I've ever seen (besides Legend of the Galactic Heroes but that's classified as an OVA so I guess it kinda doesn't count) , but might be dethroned by Fist of the North Star soon after as I've been thinking about going through that.

I guess I'm supposed to watch the first CCS movie after episode 35? I just watched 36 before seeing someone say that.

Yeah, I heard about that. It kind of sucks its not optimized well. I believe theres a patch for it but Im not sure if it fixes everything. The PC version mods though which can double your playtime with all the community levels and modded hats and badges.

I re-watched all of the original CCS back in 2017 right before Clear Card came out, and it was a lot of fun. I barely ever watch series that are 70+ episodes on my own time (rather than watching it weekly as it airs) but CCS was worth it. I think it's aged really well in comparison to other anime of its time.

Finished GGG.

Pros:
Mech design by Kunio Okawara
Character design by Takahiro Kimura
King J-Der and J were cool
Last fight was good

Cons:
Stock footage
Character deaths cheapened by fake outs (can't fake every death and then expect the viewer to feel anything when someone actually dies <_<)
Stock footage
Victories cheapened by ass pull abilities out of nowhere
Stock footage
Due to the fake outs and victories, there were neither stakes nor consequences
Stock footage
Weird music direction (hero's killer move featuring a sinister theme, opening rarely played etc etc)
Stock footage
Stagnant characters, no betrayals or counter purposes (which was on purpose, but with the above low stakes/no consequences, made for a very boring show)
That's about i-oh wait, did I mention stock footage? (At least half, hell maybe 2/3rds of the show was stock footage, is what I'm getting at)
And finally inconsistent themes/lifted ideas from anime that'd already done it, and better, three years earlier in 1994

Although the cons seem more than the pros, I've seen a lot worse and really the worst part was that I rarely felt emotion towards it, positive or negative. Good (mecha) anime should get the viewer's sides splitting, tears flowing or blood boiling. I laughed once, cried never and had lukewarm veins the entire time.

So in the end, GGG wasn't amazing or awful; it was just thoroughly average, at least for me. Hopefully Final is better <_<

What are some of your favorite mecha titles? I've been meaning to watch more. I've seen most of the Gundam series besides I think Victory and Seed (and sequels). I tend to lean toward the "real robot" side though I did think G Gundam was alright.

I started VOTOMS a while back and it was pretty cool but didn't get more than 10ish episodes in, so may just finish that.

Looks like it's time for me to shill. What happens when you combine the hype mecha action of Gundam or Gurren Lagann, the beautiful art and character designs of ReZero, and the cute girls and severe emotional trauma of Madoka Magica? You get one of the best anime of 2019, Granbelm.

Yeah, Granbelm flew way under the radar when it aired last Summer. It was an original anime (meaning no source material readers drumming up hype) in the same stacked Friday lineup as Dr. Stone, Fire Force, A Certain Scientific Accelerator, season 2 of Danmachi, the Fruits Basket reboot, and that meme-worthy MILF isekai show whose name is way too long for me to remember.... let's be honest, it was doomed from the start. But it was really good, and despite all the competition I mentioned above, Granbelm was the highlight of my Fridays.

That's quite a bit of stuff, thank you. Will definitely save all this. Despite not having seen much mecha, I'm definitely interested in seeing more so this is pretty nice info to have. Out of what I have seen, my favorite so far was probably Turn A Gundam. In fact that's probably in my top 10 overall anime.

Patlabor did catch my eye a while back because I just happened to see the opening on YouTube, was indeed really catchy. Probably be a good place to start. Also not necessarily all mecha but the 80s aesthetic in general is really appealing to me (kind of how Zeta and ZZ looked/felt).

No problem! I'd like to think giant robots are my forte, so I'm always happy to (over)share my experience with them.
Turn A is really a special anime and for a lot of people it's either a love or (unfortunately) hate kinda thing. I'm glad you like it, cuz it's one of my favorites too. Tomino's next closest work would probably be Overman King Gainer, in terms of tone.

80s was one of the best decades for robots, no doubt. Besides Patlabor, Layzner, Dunbine and Gorg, Metal Armor Dragonar is a really good pick for that aesthetic; post-ZZ, intended to be a starter for a new Gundam-like franchise but ended up only being a single series. The opening is really tight too

So Crunchyroll finally uploaded first 12 episodes of Healin' Good Precure after picking it up for simulcast at episode 13 but not having the previous ones ready at the time. So we now officially, fully, for real this time, have a Pretty Cure series being legally simulcast worldwide for the very first time. Between being on a legal streaming service and the fact that it looks like Healin' Good might be significantly shorter than other installments due to the delay earlier this year caused by the pandemic, this might become the perfect installment for newcomers to the franchise to take their first dip into it.
