Despite not having seen much mecha, I'm definitely interested in seeing more so this is pretty nice info to have. Out of what I have seen, my favorite so far was probably Turn A Gundam. In fact that's probably in my top 10 overall anime. Patlabor did catch my eye a while back because I just happened to see the opening on YouTube, was indeed really catchy. Probably be a good place to start.
