Sell any crafting/gathering ones you have now, there's new gear. For battle materia yeah 5.4 should be the high but it's way more plentiful to begin with

I've had two of my worst groups ever in dungeons today. A tank single pulling Tam-Tara (even single patrolling mobs!) is very unfun.

Must be the expanded trial!

I feel like it used to be literally required in one of the early guildhests, but I could be wrong

If there is it was before my time and I started in Heavesnward. It was possibly useful in one of the Coil add fights but I dunno. All the crowd control like sleep and bind is job-specific and the devs make sure that specific jobs aren't required. And normal dungeons have never been so difficult as to need that stuff.

I spent the last day at the Gold Saucer. A side of the game I hadn't really touched. It's fun and chill. Easy to sink a lot of time in without noticing.

worst change to the gold saucer was making instanced areas for a lot of the newer GATEs. Gold Saucer is a great place to chill during long DPS queues, but you can't do leap of faith/air force one while in queue :(

I find the polar opposite reactions to a certain lalafel strange, as I have always found her to be a completely unimportant character who effects my enjoyment in a completely neutral way. No strong love, or strong hate.

PS4 sure doesn't like this yokai watch event. Not as bad as when Skoll pops, but that's a lot of people. Also fate are not that exciting.

Been playing this for almost two weeks now, and just finished all the pre-Heavensward patches last night. Have been mostly avoiding side quests since I got to L25 or so, which I think is probably the better way to go if I don't want to burn out (especially since most of the side quests aren't super exciting), though I've been doing most of the blue ones. Fun game! The story and characters have been mostly good stuff (some of the scenes at the end of the final patch were a little silly), and the gameplay's been reasonably enjoyable. I've been playing Black Mage, which got a little boring after a while, but it got more fun again once I got Firestarted and had more stuff to pay attention to (and from what I've heard it gets more interesting as you get more abilities). Was surprised how interesting the post-ARR patch stuff turned out to be, though I was disappointed a couple times when it wouldn't give me answers that I felt like it should've (Iceheart totally could've told me WHY I shouldn't be fighting against the Dravonians, lol). Primal battles were generally highlights, and I like that they're acknowledged both story and gameplay-wise together. Everyone seeing you as a god-slayer who beats the Primals single-handedly is great (though it makes the scene at the end where you get arrested by three regular guards seem silly).

The comedy can be good stuff too. I like the sequences where characters go on and on about your eloquent speech-making abilities, and the Hildibrand quests have been great so far (I finished all of them up to the fight with Gilgamesh so far). Not sure what I should do about the Coils of Bahamut now. Didn't have any luck using the Duty Finder or Party Finder there, so maybe I'll just wait and try to solo after getting to 80 or something.

Yeah, I always hate syncing down to 50 on BLM.

Nobody uses duty finder for coils, extreme trials, or savage raids; youll have to use party finder. If you want to do coils, you have a few options:

1. wait until 80 to solo
2. get a friend to run you through
3. put up a PF that advertises first time bonus (other people will sign up to get easy poetics); if you do this, Id say in the description that youre watching the cutscenes.

If you want to do them synced itll be more effort to put together a group.

So I've been levelling my first crafter, goldsmith... when do you get to the part where you actually make money with a crafter? Level 80? Because so far this job has cost me way more than what little I've made from it. I'm like level 53 right now, with all the big expenditures coming from gearing and buying the materials for the skybuilder things for Ishgard Restoration.

I've never really tried making money from my crafting, so I couldn't say, but I offset my crafting costs for ishgard restoration by gathering from the diadem and selling the materials I wasn't using in my crafting. It's gotten somewhat less lucrative now, but while restoration was still incomplete it was very, very lucrative.

You can make money at any level if you're smart about it. For example one trick is to bulk craft a bunch of in-demand intermediate mats that people use a lot of but are too lazy to craft themselves, like ingots or whatever. It used to be stuff used in leves but I dont think anyone does those anymore so I'd look out for things used in Restoration turn-ins instead. You can also unlock the master crafter books, some of the cosmetics might go for money but those are always competitive and some are crapshoots. Oh, and look for any nice furniture you can make.

There isn't going to be a point where this magically changes, btw. When you hit max level you get access to more stuff, but crafting combat gear to sell is always a trap unless you can get in within the first few days. Crafting/gathering gear used to sell decently though maybe that is different now that so many people have leveled crafters. You just have to learn how to play the market.

If you were leveling CUL or ALC it's a different story because max level pots and food always sell at a decent rate, the margins aren't huge but it's a consistent income source.

Edit: I guess for specific recommendations check out how much the level 51-53 crafting and gathering accessories go for? Those used to be important while leveling but maybe they don't matter now that everything is turbo fast.

Spamming retainers, maps, and just playing the game for a long period of time starts to add up with roulettes/dailys/challenge log and stuff

If you want to make millions fast then you can do some around new patch time but the other stuff lets you coast

So I've slowly been dipping my toes back into FFXIV recently. I'm in the beginning stages of Heavensward. The music in Foundation is pretty awesome.

I tried doing The Striking Tree (Extreme) yesterday. It didn't go well at all. We got to adds a few times but overall we got wiped pretty consistently. This was my first Extreme one of those. Are they all super difficult to figure out like that one?

Yeah, extreme fights are the first tier of hardcore content. If you are doing them at-level you can expect to have to look up a guide and spend hours dying to them before your first clear with random.

Typically for older ones, people will form groups in party finder to unsync them (going in at max level) which makes them a joke.

If you queued for an Extreme directly through Duty Finder you most likely pulled in a couple newbies and then some disgruntled mentors hoping to get an easy dungeon on their mentor roulette. Anything marked Extreme, Savage, or a Coil of Bahamut really should be done through Party Finder.

I imagine you highlight certain classes you want to take in or something like that. THere's probably a form of pre-planning involved that you don't get with Duty Finder.

PF is a little intimidating at first but it's really just used to put more specific parameters on things and to advertise getting groups together for specific content. Like unsynced as we said, or for learning parties for newbies vs clear/farm parties that don't want people who have not completed the fight. People don't tend to get too needy about specific jobs beyond making sure there are no duplicates and getting at least one of each melee/ranged/caster DPS (since those things affect party buffs and Limit Break meter). So it's pre-planning like you said but not too intense, it's meant to facilitate grouping with randoms but for things you want a bit more control over than duty finder gives you.
