Yeah stupid thing but since we are going for GOTD what better place to ask right?

I have a few games that I like a lot but if I had to choose I would pick Resident Evil 4. This game was and still is phenomenal. The only game that I have bought multiple times. And even today if you asked me to play a game and enjoy it I would pick RE 4. If someone hadn't played a video game at all I would still tell them to play RE 4, even on Easy mode.

So what about you?

Resident Evil 4.

It's just a blast to play no matter what. I've probably pour thousands of hours across the multitude of platforms I've played/own it on.

Skies of Arcadia rotates as my number 1 as well, but that's mostly nostalgia based, outside of being a great game in general.

Its close between OoT and NGB but because oot is driven more so by nostalgia ill go with NGB

Ninja Gaiden Black for me is one of the finest action games ever created and an absolute masterclass in slick fast smooth close combat gameplay. Probably beaten it ofer 100 times and i never get bored of playing it. Even to this day looks great on my xbox X and still plays great

Metroid Prime is a close 3rd too

Metal Gear Solid 3, Resident Evil 4, and more recently Bloodborne have been rotating as my favorite game ever.

MGS3 has the best story of the three, and there's an absolutely absurd amount of charm, cheese, and polish in every facet of its design.

RE4 just feels great to play, and is somehow even cheesier than MGS3. Leon is such a perfect fit in that game.

I've been doing an annual playthrough of Bloodborne ever since it came out, and it feels even better to play now than it did back then. Stabbing a dude with a sword, then pressing a single button to sheathe it into a giant fucking hammer and bring it crashing down on their head is such a wonderful feeling.

I have to say it's a Guilty Gear or Smash Bros series game. Nothing gets my blood flowing like competition in those. For a while it might have been Ratchet & Clank 3, which I've 100%ed a few times. Okami is also one of my favorites for arguably doing the 3D Zelda-like better than any other game.

I played Persona 4 when I most needed it - when I was a lonely, jerk of a teenager too full of himself to make friends. Never before has a piece of media encouraged me to get over myself and believe in others so strongly. The agency I felt being able to develop relationships in those games and turn it into a tangible benefit resonated with me and helped me improve myself. I mean, it's a good game on top of that, real good RPG'ing with a fantastic level curve (that Golden mucks up, admittedly), but it's one of those bits of impact that'll stick with me. Resonated with me and actually gave direction of where to go from there - that's the rare bit.

Banjo-Kazooie is also real good, funny bear game with good platforming. Probably the best mix of score attack-style action with the Note Score system and exploration with its collectathon sensibilities without overbloating itself. Turning exploration itself into a collectable with the quiz at the end is absolutely brilliant, blew my mind that the game cared as much about its world as I did growing up.

Bioshock

It really just changed the way I perceived games as a medium. It was the first game to make me ever feel guilty for an action (specifically, harvesting a little sister). It changed my idea of what was possible with gaming atmosphere due to the incredible sound design. It told a story more deep and interesting than any I'd see in gaming prior.

Breath of the Wild. That game absolutely consumed my life for weeks on end. The amount of things it let's you do that other games would never even think of is insane.

Not far behind it is Outer Wilds which is probably the most affecting game I've ever played. A year later and I still can't stop thinking about it and yet I can't play it again because the game only truly works when you don't understand what's going on.

Sitting behind those is Blast Corps on N64 because smashing up buildings is just good stupid fun, I still complete it once every couple of years.

Resident Evil Remake

To put it simply, it has gorgeous graphics no matter which version you play thanks to fantastic camera work & some of the most detailed pre-rendered backgrounds ever, superb soundtrack, extremely challenging survival horror gameplay with so many tricks and surprises to keep you on edge at all times, a wonderfully reworked story that's creepy & subtle with the overall best files in RE history, and it has so much extra content and modes that are endlessly replayable.

I used to have simple answers to this question, but it's become more contextual over time. A lot of games have their time and place. And they all have tradeoffs! I would need to split them up into genres.

For such a basic question, this inspired a lot of thought

MGS3

Fun story aside, there's such a truly insane amount of little things to learn about the design that makes every inch of the game feel plastered with legitimate passion. Starving guards later in the game by blowing up supply sheds early on, poisoning a boss with rotten food, CROC HEAD, hidden views during cutscenes, secret items galore, a hidden nightmare level, literally killing a boss by skipping a cutscene and sniping him hours earlier than you were supposed to OR waiting real-life days for him to die of old age. Honestly just absolutely everything about The End.

I could and have gone on for hours just talking about how many minute examples of brilliant design there are in this game. Nothing had ever been made quite like it before and nothing's replicated the depth of its ocean of kooky ideas since.

Runners up (though some for very different reasons) include Majora's Mask, REmake, Bloodborne and Yakuza 0.

Super Mario 64

Christmas 1996 when I opened the N64 with Mario, Pilotwings, and Wave Race was the most magical ever. Everything about that game blew me away. It felt like something out of a dream to me because I had never seen anything other than 2D games. And while the graphics are definitely dated these days, I still have a blast playing it every single time.

The only way it can be improved is with crouch walking. Crouch walking with a normal control scheme and not running at 15-20fps, that is. We don't speak of the 3DS port.

A few years ago I would've said Mother 3 without a second thought but I don't think it's that simple anymore. When it comes to the story it's still on top though, so it's one of the three games I'd consider my favorite ever.

The other two are Hollow Knight and DDLC. Hollow Knight just plays, looks, sounds, and feels absolutely fantastic, looking at pure gameplay it comes out on top and it's really not even close.

DDLC is there for the emotional impact it had, no other game has made me rethink so many things about myself, other people, and just the world in general, and I think it's safe to say that no game ever will.

All three are games that could be my all-time favorite, but there's no way I could pick one of them over the others.

Shadow of the Colossus does so much with so little. To my mind it's not only the best game ever, it's also the smartest game I've ever played. I think its only flaw outside slightly janky controls is that it's the epitome of a one and done type game, but I'm fine with that.

I also wanna shout out SMT Nocturne, a game in my top 5 that I doubt is gotta get love itt. What a phenomenal RPG, Atlus was at its best when it kept the anime trappings to a reasonable minimum.
