In short: "We're copying Nintendo's HD rumble idea* and making a controller that's otherwise basically the same as everything else on the market now." Nifty. Not sure I'm a fan of how low-profile the buttons look, but I'm guessing it'll work out.

Disclaimer: I honestly haven't noticed the whole HD rumble thing contributing much of anything to Switch games and I recognize that there's considerable potential to employ the concept properly in a full-size controller, so I don't think them going the haptic route is necessarily a bad thing. Just kind of entertaining.

I'm sure as long as it stays symmetrical I'll get used to it. I'd be happy if there weren't changes too, been using this style since PS1 and have no major complaints. I mean 'select' was useful, 'share' is not. The battery life isn't good but I'm always plugged in. Lightbar is fine as it is. Nothing is a dealbreaker.

Looks like the PS controller had a baby with the XBox controller.

I'll leave the actual verdict to if that's what it's like and if I ever play one, but first impression is that doesn't look comfortable for me to play a game with tbh.

They have moved the lightbar, apparently improved battery life and now have a mic built into the controller. The only issues I have with DS 4 is the lightbar and battery life so I'd say they have indeed fixed things.

The transition from ps3 to PS4 controllers was both wild and exotic. The ps1 had the same feeling when they introduced the dual shock controllers.

I was going to say something about that pad as well. Whenever I try to pause a game I press that instead.

Functionally its like a car with one of its drive wheels missing. Itll go, just not as well as it could.

They moved it to a worse place when it shouldn't exist, the battery life thing is entirely speculative and relative to the DS4, not DS3. Also a shitty mic for every squeaker isn't a good thing, it just raises the price. Nobody wants the ridiculous haptic pad yet there it is because the DS4 abortion had it.

There'll probably be options. Right now I have two PS4 controllers, one is solid black and one is all solid white.

Personally, I'm just annoyed it looks like they kept the touch pad. That thing is ass. And mostly pointless.

I'd also complain about the secondary button still being a "Share" type button as opposed to a "Select" option, but I know that's a ship that sailed long ago and all you young shits cry when you can't upload screenshots or vid capture to Twitch or YouTube. And no, Sony isn't fooling me by renaming it "Create" instead. I'm on to your shenanigans, Sony.

I'd argue that in an ideal world, most controllers should be relatively uniform. It makes it less jarring when you switch from one to another and everything changes.

In the same vein, it's why I feel like there should be standard assumptions about common button placement (Jump should be on A, not Y, Bethesda. Stop being terrible at literally everything). And it should be standard operating procedure for games to allow button remapping if a player hates standard layouts and decides they want shooting on B, jump on RS-click, and melee on LB (because something is broken in their brain).

I know why companies like proprietary designs for controllers, but it would be awesome if we could get some sort of Grand Unified Theory for controller design. And Nintendo had to be forced to conform instead of coming out with ridiculously non-conformist controllers every generation that are generally kind of awkward and unnecessary.

If we still want innovation in controller design, we can always leave it to third-party support or gimmick hardware like the Zapper or ROB.

I think the touchpad is mostly to blame for the short battery. Much like the back of the Vita it could have been neat but it just wasn't used outside of a handful of titles. You wonder if they left it in just for the sake of PS4 compatibility.

I don't "mind" the two-tone set up but it still feels like wasted R&D money. It's unnecessary. The best controller was DS3 being just a solid, functional controller with a long battery life.
