Why is every place sold out of the regular Switch but every store has plenty of Lites that nobody wants?

They thought it might sell. Despite having more mature gamea Nintendo ia still seen as a kids console. Parents will sometimes go with the cheaper option. Same reason 2ds exists

I would impulse buy it for 100 but I don't really want a worse version of the switch with non detachable controllers since they are defective.

Also the depleted stock seems to indicate maybe they stopped manufacturing to do the pro model.

Also me buying one usually forces out an updated model shortly after anyways.

Yes. A company that has being going longer than you have been alive is terrible at business.
In answer to your question though it's supply and demand. They supply less so the demand is higher. Even if that isn't the case you're basically asking why things sell out.

Options as some folk actually do want it/have it. It makes no difference to anything that a alternative model is available of a console other than Nintendo appealing to a bigger market. if you're suggesting that's a bad thing then that's why Nintendo are a successful business and you're not successful period.

Unless it makes it more portable and that's what you're looking for. When it comes to handhelds, screen size has a huge impact on the size of the overall device, which strongly affects its portability. The full-size Switch is pretty awkward to transport, due to its size (I can get away with taking the joycons off and storing it in some coat pockets, but that's about it), and the Lite helps to address that issue at the expense of screen size and the console mode.

All other things being equal, a bigger screen is generally going to be better than a smaller one, but you're going to be very hard-pressed to find a situation where all other things are actually going to be equal.

It's better for some things, but suggesting that it's the better option in all scenarios is nonsense. If you have friends that you ever play local multiplayer with, it's worse. If you ever want to use docked mode, it's worse. If you only ever use handheld mode, it's better (though with how temperamental the joycon sticks are and how much harder it is to replace the built-in ones than detachable ones, that's still debatable). The Lite is a good idea, but it's not the best version for everyone, nor will it ever be.

No, that's obviously nonsense. Stop being silly. Not being sold out means it isn't selling faster than supplies are coming in. There's substantial middle ground between selling out and not selling at all, as anyone who understands anything about business (or just basic empirical reality) can tell you.

As for why the regular Switch is currently selling out but the Lite is not, I personally know several people who have bought a Switch in the past 2-3 weeks, presumably because being quarantined has been the push they needed to go for it. People who are quarantined don't really need portable systems, so most people looking to buy a Switch right now aren't going to really value a portable-only variant. That's going to favour sales of the regular Switch more so than usual.

If you want to actually compare sales of the two, you need to look at overall sales numbers, not just what's on the shelves at your local Gamestop. Recent sales data is eluding me in my ~10 seconds of googling, but here's some data from October:

That puts the Lite at having sold ~10% of total Switch sales (1.9 vs. 18 million) up to that point, which isn't bad for a new remodel. The Lite also sold almost as well following its initial release as the original Switch did, which is unusual for a remodel. I would guess its sales have probably slowed down by now relative to the original, since a lot of those initial sales were likely people who had been on the fence about getting a Switch for a while and were pulled in by the prospect of a cheaper one, but it's still definitely sold enough to have been worth developing.

The Lite doesn't go far enough in turning the Switch into a proper handheld, which I consider the real issue with it.

However, fluctuations in demand are pretty typical and, more importantly, the real error is likely on the part of the stores who didn't order enough. Nintendo has no real control over stores' decision to adequately stock product.

Ehh, could go either way with Nintendo. They don't have the best history of making adequate stock for in-demand items, usually in an effort to create an artificial shortage to drive up demand. It wouldn't surprise me if stores failed to order enough to meet demand, and it also wouldn't surprise me if Nintendo didn't manufacture enough, especially with how popular Animal Crossing has been and the number of people that have bought a Switch just to play that while sequestered.

That definitely wasn't the norm. The Wii was very difficult to find for a couple months after its release. That was one of Nintendo's more high-profile supply shortages.
