YEAR 14 RULE CHANGES: Although I reserve the right to change my mind, I am declaring this to be my final year as contest host. Five years is a solid length of time, and I think I owe it to the board to give someone else a chance if they want it. However, Ive done my best to strike a balance between maintaining tradition and innovating on the format. This year will feature two major adjustments. Please, if nothing else, read this post to be familiar with how year 14 will differ from its predecessors. . 1. Extra lives Last year, we expanded the field from 128 to 192. We will still have 192 songs, in 16 divisions of 12. However, the format will be different. No song will get a bye. Instead, one of the four-packs will lay completely empty. At the conclusion of the first two rounds, the 9 songs from that division that have been eliminated will get a second chance poll. The winner will be placed into the fourth slot. In order to prevent rematches, it will be inserted into a neighboring division. Wait, what? Here, a picture is easiest: https://imgur.com/fqpi0s8 My intent with the play-in round is to single out a day just for that, give everyone six points to assign however they like (max 3 per song) and take the winner from there. Effectively youd get a +3, +2, +1, unless you decide to spread it around differently. This component may change by the time we get there. . 2. Auto-includes The nomination period seems to have been divisive the last several years, between two camps those who love the final rush at the end and those who want to know their songs are secure without the heartache and heartburn of the rising tide from the cut-off line. Nominations will be open on Friday the 13th. For exactly one week, any songs that have accrued five votes, be they singles or doubles or any combination thereof, will be immediately LOCKED. Locked songs will be automatically included in the bracket, and anyone who has supported them will be unable to drop their votes. Nominations will remain open for another 48 hours thereafter. The remaining slots available in the bracket will be handled in the usual manner. . Retirees: Still retired I also proposed allowing retirees back into the fold for one year, but that suggestion will not be enacted. The contest is open to anyone who wants to participate, and we would love to welcome more people to join us. Nominations will open on March 13th and close on March 22nd. (Visual novels are acceptable.) To elaborate on that fifth point, the game cannot be a famous song that was included in a video game, such as the majority of Guitar Hero and Rock Band. It cannot be a remix, unless that remix is also part of the games soundtrack. It cannot be a song that only appears as bonus material on the official soundtrack. There have been many edge cases involving what does or does not originate from a video game, including long versions of visual novel intros and tracks from rhythm games, or songs that have been licensed but are completely unknown outside of their game. In general, we have shifted over the years from a policy of exclusion to one of inclusion, but dont be afraid to ask if you arent sure. . Your Nominations You have twenty (20) nominations. They can be for songs you know and roll out for the forum. They can be to support other songs that people have already suggested. You get a total of twenty votes regardless of which songs they are for. You also have five (5) doubles. You may pick five songs that you especially like and want to push even if they dont seem to be getting as much support as everything else. A double, obviously, counts as two votes from the same person. You may not use your doubles to support extra songs past 20. You may not use normal supports to amplify additional songs past 5. It is strongly recommended that you look at the spreadsheet that has compiled all the nominations so far, and even keep a watch to see how your favorite songs are doing. Song Selection After nominations end, we will look at everyones supports and take the top 192 songs to get into the bracket according to the following hierarchy: 1) Locked songs 2) Songs with the highest number of nominations 3) Songs with the fewest doubles 4) Hosts discretion 5) Random selection Which is to say, locked songs are automatic. Then highest supports gets in. The primary tiebreaker is number of unique nominators. Thus a song with 5 supports from 5 people (5/5 for short) is going to have priority over a 5/4, which in turn has priority over a 5/3. If there are multiple songs still contending for the remaining slots, then the host will decide if any extenuating circumstances merit adding particular songs to the bracket. This will be done exclusively to accommodate users who were less successful during the nomination period. Remaining slots will be selected randomly. . Bracket Design Once the field is chosen, appointed individuals will do their best to construct the most reasonable and interesting bracket they can within a reasonable period of time. Please be patient while WHERE BRACKET?!? while they work on assembling it. Once it is complete, there will be a short window for everyone to make predictions on BracketMaker. The contest will begin in earnest at the end of March. My guesstimate is on the 29th or 30th. . Song matches Each topic will go up at 10:00 U.S. Eastern (3:00 UTC) and will feature two contest matches. The four songs involved will be listed, along with links for each. Users will vote for their preference in each match, but only after they have listened to both songs in the match. It is mandatory that all votes are decided in a manner that is fair and based on the quality of the songs. Votes can be disqualified at the hosts discretion, primarily determined by suspicion that these rules have not been following in good faith. Winner advances, loser goes home. Pretty straightforward. Ties will be re-run the next available day. Double tiebreakers will be decided by unique voters across all three matches, should it come to that. . Extra lives New to this year, there will be positions in the bracket reserved for songs losing in rounds 1 or 2 to have the opportunity to re-enter the bracket. At the conclusion of round 2, all nine songs that have lost from a division will be cast into a huge match, decided by preferential voting. The winner of the poll will be granted a position in a neighboring division for round 3. The exact mechanics for the nine-way are still TBD. . Retirement and Beyond Any song that wins in round 4 will be added to the retirement list. This is an honor granted to any song that has performed well in a contest, essentially sending them to the VGMC hall of fame. To many users, having a song reach retirement is almost as lofty an accomplishment as winning the contest. Beginning with the round of 8, all matches will get their own day. The contest will begin in earnest at the end of March. My guesstimate is on the 29th or 30th. . Song matches Each topic will go up at 10:00 U.S. Eastern (3:00 UTC) and will feature two contest matches. The four songs involved will be listed, along with links for each. Users will vote for their preference in each match, but only after they have listened to both songs in the match. It is mandatory that all votes are decided in a manner that is fair and based on the quality of the songs. Votes can be disqualified at the hosts discretion, primarily determined by suspicion that these rules have not been following in good faith. Winner advances, loser goes home. Pretty straightforward. Ties will be re-run the next available day. Double tiebreakers will be decided by unique voters across all three matches, should it come to that. . Extra lives New to this year, there will be positions in the bracket reserved for songs losing in rounds 1 or 2 to have the opportunity to re-enter the bracket. At the conclusion of round 2, all nine songs that have lost from a division will be cast into a huge match, decided by preferential voting. The winner of the poll will be granted a position in a neighboring division for round 3. The exact mechanics for the nine-way are still TBD. . Retirement and Beyond Any song that wins in round 4 will be added to the retirement list. This is an honor granted to any song that has performed well in a contest, essentially sending them to the VGMC hall of fame. To many users, having a song reach retirement is almost as lofty an accomplishment as winning the contest. Beginning with the round of 8, all matches will get their own day. I will also require any users who are just jumping in at that point to copy-paste a disclaimer stating that they are indeed voting according to the stated rules in order to avoid VGMC10s finals debacle. </quote> ...
