I've been thinking about this and I oft go with Iris or Lolo depending on the character's gender, for pokemon games and JRPGs anyway. Don't often use my actual first name, but rarely.
When it's one of those with space for a full name (like in Skyrim), I basically have no repeats.

Marina is my Pokemon name any time that I choose the female character (a decision that I make based on the available clothing options for each gender). I still use my real name for male characters so I don't have any fictional ones there.

I have different ones for different genres/styles

If it's a realistic/western looking game like Soulsborne, Elder Scrolls, etc. I use Sebastian. If it's more "anime" style like Dragon Quest, Pokemon, etc. I use my Japanese name. I always use the characters real name if available (Zelda, early FF, sometimes Persona)

I don't choose female characters often enough to have a go-to name

The whole basis of the name azuarc is that I didn't know what to name a character for Dragon Quest 4, so I just picked random letters on the entry grid.

More recently, I'll use the name of the main character from the novels I've been writing. Curiously, that often leads me to playing in a different style than I once would have. Historically I've been more about survival -- playing ranged or healing characters -- but now I tend to have a much heavier melee / close quarters focus.

If there's a big cast, I'll usually do comic book characters (Justice League International and X-Men usually), once upon a time Board 8ers/PSB users (Pikaness is Pikachu, Stingers is Gligar, Ryokles is Sneasel, Applekidjosh is Tauros, GamerPanda is Miltank, Gotspork is Bellsprout, Inviso is Poochyena, Heroic Metool is Beldum, LucidFaia is Meditite, Ermine is Zigzagoon, I believe I slotted RX7 to be Rayquaza but I think I'm wrong, and I'm really really beating myself up on not remembering who GMUN, Smurf, Nio, Raka, Satai Delenn, CrimsonOcean, BIGPUN, Sir Chris, Wigs, Drakeryn, or anyone else were. Ryoga H was Growlithe, Uratoh was Vulpix, Nickwhiz was either Voltorb or Staryu... nope Starman Senior was Staryu, BlastoiseMaster was Squirtle, squirrelboy was Sentret, La Hire/Redfire/kittyfromangelhell were a triumvirate but don't remember which, Cyberlight was Magnemite, sandact was Sandshrew, ....wow I've tangented...)

Um, anyways... yeahh... think my most recent naming convention has been SD3 characters in Wildermyth, eventually turning to the mana spirits.

Sometimes I roll out Tombolo or a variant thereof, but I like coming up with a new name every game, even if it's usually just a reference to another game.

This was all/mostly Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, too.

Some more thoughts:

- Didn't remember if Naye was Slugma or Carnivine until I double checked Carnivine as being Gen IV.
- amyvitality was Igglybuff
- FFDragon and PepsiPlunge were a pair of some sort.
- Snorlax = The JP
- FutureMoonBunny was Cleffa
- ugh... FFD, FD, and Drakeryn.... who was who? I think Drak was Trapinch. I think FD was Bagon. Was FFD Larvitar? Then who is Pepsi?
- Hmmm... Who was Zachnorn? I feel like either he or someone related to the stick.am Pokemon Stadium 2 stuff were the Zangoose/Seviper rivalry.
- Ulti was Slakoth IIRC
- GrapefuitKing (RIP) was Slowpoke.
- Dinobot, DpOblivion, Wigs, Dilated Chemist, SineNomine, Transi-
- Transience and Ed Bellis may have been the Zangoose/Seviper! Or Was it Phanpy and Teddiursa? YES. Transience was definitely Teddiursa because of the cookie pic, but I don't know if Ed was Phanpy. Maybe he was a Regi?
- Heroic Mario and AmazingTelephone I think, I think, were two of the three legendary birds. MyWorldIsSquare........ hrrrmm...
- I don't remember his name, but Abra was likely the guy that did those Battle Royale stories. Headless Jou may have even been Nosepass or something.

I like coming up with new names each game. In my head they're canonically different characters and they hang out and have battle tournaments and such, so it's awkward when two of them have the same name.

Also, board 8er pokemon, let's see...
- HGR the Empoleon
- Lopen the Luxray (this was in a fangame so he was Dark/Electric)
- Silver the Galvantula
- meisnewbie the Reuniclus
- numbers the Haxorus
- Sytha the Darmanitan
- MARIA the Weavile

Probably others I'm forgetting.
