Bluray is 13 years old now, so someone on GFs could have gone their whole lives with nothing but Bluray.

One of my biggest regrets as a child was asking for the phantom menace on VHS when that same birthday I also got a PS2.

There's kinda of a grey area since I didn't specify which years exactly, like dvds started becoming common when I was 13, but the majority of my childhood was vhs but I still picked dvd and vhs.

Same for me but I didnt consider it growing up with at thirteen-ish. We didnt get a DVD player until way later because DVDs were super expensive when they came out.

Give credit where its due. Beta Max started out first then VHS

VHS for watching TV shows you recorded.

8 track tapes and LPs for listening to music.

Cassette tapes for storing programs on your computer, which was plugged into the TV.

Grew up with VHS. I still remember we needed to use a whole room to store all of them. Good times. My dad also got a LaserDisc player, that was really fun. We fought over who got to flip that giant CD to side two.

VHS was still new at the time back then but movies for Beta were still around at the time also. Then in early 1991 started the whole Laserdisc phase

VHS. I was born in 1980, so DVDs weren't even a thing well into my teenage years, and even then, I didn't get a DVD player until the early 2000s. Hell, I worked at a Hollywood Video when it had a huge VHS collection still.

Yeah those were pretty expensive. My dad got one for cheap from a work friend. And he hit garage sales for the discs. I think he got twenty movies for $5.

VCR. Launch PS2 was my first DVD player which came out when I was almost 15.

My uncle showed me Space Odyssey on his laser disc once. Those discs were hilarious.

VHS. My dad still has a VHS player too and VHS stuff. The PS1 was the time I started to transfer over to DVD and that was in my teens. These days I'm more DVD than anything if I want physical media outside of video games. Although with movies at least I'm more digital focused.

Mostly VHS, my first DVD player was my PS2 and my dad didn't get a dedicated DVD player until like 2005. My dad still has our old VHS player hooked up to his 4K TV, LOL.

Not everyone immediately adopts new tech, either... Didn't start my DVD collection till 2003, and still don't really use Blu-Ray b/c DVD is cheaper and works fine for me

We only had VHS until 2004, when we finally got a DVD player. I was 12 in 2004.

To be fair, Blurays really haven't replaced DVD's the way DVD's replaced VHS. DVD's are unquestionably superior to VHS's in pretty much every way (picture quality, convenience, durability, space requirements, medium cost, player costs...). Once the technology was old enough to be comparable in price to VHS/VCR's, there was really no reason to stick to VHS.

Bluray, by comparison, is definitely superior to DVD in terms of picture quality, but that's not a benefit you can actually tap into without a large enough TV with a high enough resolution, and even then it comes at a higher medium cost and a much higher player cost (due mostly to the fact that Sony has full ownership of the necessary firmware), with no other benefits (outside of multi-DVD box sets that can be condensed onto 1-2 BD's, which do offer space savings). It's still perfectly reasonable not to want to pay extra for the Bluray copy of something, and will continue to be until such a time as bluray players are as cheap and ubiquitous as DVD ones (which may not happen until Sony's patent expires).

Yeah, it's so weird. My 2007-2008 laptop had a bluray player as part of the disc drive. Flash forward 8 years and I'm looking for a new laptop and NONE of them have it.
Me: "...Did technology regress? WTF?"

Of course, now it's tough to even get a damn disc drive in a laptop at all. Thanks a lot for setting that "trend", Apple

A lot of that is also because you need to buy software to actually be able to use that drive, even once it's there. Most people kind of balk at the idea of spending an extra $50+ to actually be able to use the hardware they've already bought, and while prebuilt computers with BD drives will usually come with the necessary software, it does drive the price up quite considerably over a simple $15 DVD-RW drive. Toss in that it's largely useless for anything other than home theatre PC's (which are a fairly narrow niche that usually sees people building their own machine or ordering a custom one instead of buying a prebuilt), and it's not that surprising that it's unusual to see the drives.

Eh, I can kind of understand that one. Outside of installing old games and watching DVD movies (both of which are fairly niche markets these days thanks to digital distribution services), there really isn't that much use for an optical drive in any computer, let alone a portable one where having one makes the whole thing quite a bit larger. For those that do want a drive, USB optical drives are only like $30, while everyone else gets a slimmer laptop without having to sacrifice anything they really care about. It's not a perfect workaround, but I think the tradeoff is worth it for most people.

Eh, I can kind of understand that one. "Quite a bit bigger" being like...0.25 inches thicker than if it doesn't have it....
It's not niche for me. And the external USB optical drive might even be acceptable...if these jerks would replace the missing optical drive w/ more USB ports. But they usually don't.
