As much as I hate the concept of remaking a perfect game, I really wish they just released it all at once and made a 400 hour epic. The only thing that could make me forgive messing with perfection is by making it so immersive that I am basically living in the world of FFVII.

I went back and watched the original to see if they showed Cloud on the train as it was pulling in and they didn't and couldn't help but wonder why they decided to change that part since it does take away from his grand entrance. Doesn't matter that everyone knows who's on the train, but it's silly to make a new fancy entrance for him that was already spoiled by something else they also added in

It's basically a frame for frame reproduction of the Crisis Core version.

Tomb Raider Anniversary did the same thing, but the devs explained it.

In Tomb Raider 1 (1996) the game starts with Lara walking up the mountain in Peru and her face hidden until she has to fight wolves, then you see her in a big reveal.

In Anniversary, they just show her face immediately. The devs for Anniversary explained it by saying that because everyone knew Lara Croft at that point, there was no point dramatically revealing the character anymore

this was pretty sweet. it's interesting to see the changes.

in the original game, at first it feels like midgar is the entire world. oppressive. the "giant pizza" you can't escape. it doesn't even show you the outside world until 10+ hours in. it is assumed at first that the world could have been that way for centuries.

in the original cinematic, the scene opens up from the ground, only slowly pulling back to show the grand scope of the city, and going not an inch further- everything else is black.

in the new cinematic, the game opens up from the perspective of a literal eagle/hawk/bird, soaring above open land, before showing pre-mako midgar, presumably only 10 to 15 years in the past

the buildings are sunny, and the sky open

this is a tonal shift from the original. When Barret would go off on how the land was hurting, how good things used to be, how good they could become, you weren't sure if he was full of it. various characters gave renditions that were provably inaccurate by the end of the game

now, does this ruin the game? of course not. does it really affect me? no, I obviously remember the plot twists. would i have slightly preferred they maintain the game's arc of gritty, slime green, concrete darkness giving way to natural light over time? of course- i want new players to not only see the same characters but also experience the same "feeling"

the n64/ps1 video game era is extremely nostalgic to me, because the medium was progressing so quickly. so many games were the literal first of their kind- ff7, super mario 64, ocarina of time. grand adventures in three dimensions, this one with strong characterization and story. the first games of their genre to be done well. i honestly thought midgar was going to be the entirety of disc 1

the game gradually revealing how large the world actually was paralleled the party learning about the earth's true history, which also paralleled me understanding what gaming was capable of becoming.

BotW was bigger than Skyrim and probably bigger than this. Brawl had an insane level of hype never seen before or since, but came and went in a year, while we still get BotW threads.

Anyway, as somebody who is relatively (OG) FF7-sceptic, this game looks fantastic. It looks like they are delivering on the original idea of FF7, in the same way that BotW does for Zelda and the RE2 Remake did for RE2.

Maybe not a year, but the hype had turned to disdain by the time GOTD rolled around a bit over two years later. Additionally that game took an extra three months to come to Europe (remember region release date gaps?) so when I actually got that game I distinctly remember diminished hype on B8.

Eh, Melee stans rejected Brawl from the start. The game still very nearly won the contest anyway.

But there was plenty of Brawl talk for a long time on B8. People held tournaments, discussed tiers, argued about whether Melee or Brawl was better, etc. Smash 4 is what made Brawl go away.

like yeah people still make BotW topics here but they've been people playing it for the first time three years later

most people who wanted Brawl got it almost immediately

These arent things I specifically thought about but you really hit how remakes very often miss the point of what they're remaking.

Like if it were me, I would completely throw out anything that has to do with Compilation. Not just because I don't like them very much, but the original game didn't need them to be a phenomenon. You could change as little as possible and it should be an enormous success.

RE2 is my idea of as close to a perfect remake as you can get. The presentation and controls were given a facelift, but the original experience is essentially untouched. I felt like I was playing an actual old school RE. And it's not a 1 to 1 game or anything either.

I wish Square believed in or understood their original product.
