it's making big news that the new mcdonald's chicken sandwich that they're rolling out to compete with popeye's and chick fil a's chicken sandwiches has msg in it. And a lot of consumers don't like it.

Chinese food has tons of it. Its just salt, basically.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG), also known as sodium glutamate, is the sodium salt of glutamic acid, one of the most abundant naturally occurring non-essential amino acids. Glutamic acid is found naturally in tomatoes, grapes, cheese, mushrooms and other foods. MSG is used in the food industry as a flavor enhancer with an umami taste that intensifies the meaty, savory flavor of food, as naturally occurring glutamate does in foods such as stews and meat soups.

Uhh, the fact that Glutamate is naturally occurring doesn't mean MSG is naturally occurring. That's not how chemicals work, to say nothing of the naturalistic fallacy you seem to be invoking there.

I have no strong feelings on it. I grew up avoiding it because my mother's sensitive to it (she's got a buttload of allergies), but even without her directly influencing my preferences that way, I tend to not be a fan of it as an artificial flavouring. Naturally umami foods are great and all, but sticking the flavour into stuff that I know shouldn't have it just ends up feeling incongruous to me.

There hasn't been enough research that water doesn't cause cancer, so why risk drinking water? We don't need research to tell us water is essential or the earth is real so why would you need research to tell you that naturally occuring salts we've eaten for centuries is fine?

You know what we also don't have? Any cases of an allergic reaction to MSG despite the wild claims.

Depending on when and where you went to school, it may not have been taught. Though, I heard it does exist again. Not sure how credible it is since Im doing a full investigation. But here are some links...

It sort of reminds me of the whole pterodactyl/pterosaurs mix up. Though, in those cases, I dont think it was faked. But an actual mistake... And more of a naming issue. Or how the Sabertooth tiger was the Sabertooth Cat...

When did he mention a fast food diet? Or anybody, for that reason? I thought the question was about MSG. He didnt ask if it was ok to have a fast diet. He asked if MSG was safe to eat. Eating one sandwich from McDonalds doesnt mean you have a full fast food diet. And you can use the water analogy, because it still works. So how about you zip it?

This topic is about a McDonald's food product, aka, fast food. Considering that one chicken sandwich is over 50% of the recommended daily sodium intake, it's a high sodium food. Add french fries and in one meal you've eaten all the sodium you should for the day. Not drinking a healthy amount of water daily, makes that level of sodium intake worse.

As far as the water analogy goes, the only non- drowning water related deaths, are extremely rare, while health problems related to high sodium diets are extremely common. The analogy doesn't work.

Nobody said it wasnt a high sodium food. But one sandwich doesnt make it a high sodium diet. And thats even if they get fries. And they might get water. Having fast food one day is just that. A diet happens over time. Even something like a weekly diet or so.

It does matter if its rare or not. The fact that it can happen is what matters. So, it does work. As the analogy wasnt how often death happens. But that it can be bad to have too much of anything. So, yeah. It does work...

It in fact matters greatly. The average person does not need to worry about drinking so much water they will die, since the amount needed is extraordinary. But, the average person does need worry about how much sodium is in their diet, especially if they eat like you, and living of fast and over processed foods which are ladened with sodium.

Recommended sodium intake is highly dependent on water intake. It is an issue of balance so if you double your sodium intake, you can double your water intake. As it happens, drinks in general count toward your water intake, so drinking 2 2 litre bottles of coke zero would zero it out, despite what your poor nutritional knowledge tells you.

And? As I said, Im not comparing the number of deaths. Im comparing the fact that too much of either can cause death. You can keep finding the number of deaths. But that wont change the fact that both can cause death. Which is the only thing I was comparing. Which means all your facts mean nothing unless you can prove that too much water cant cause death. But its been proven that too much water can cause death. Meaning that no matter what you say, the analogy will always work...
