I see that a remake is winning this year's GOTY and that two other remakes are in 4th and 5th. this is probably going to be the least popular contest yet since everyone still left on this site is so apathetic to anything resembling a new video game.

what's the consensus on GOTD? probably a battle between Mario, Zelda and Smash since everything else has fallen off so hard..? so that's.. Mario Odyssey or Galaxy 2, Breath of the Wild and Smash 4/Ultimate?

I'd feel better about BOTW if people still played video games here - I almost wonder if an older game would do a little better because at least people felt something about video games earlier in the decade. but yeah it probably cleans up anyway because Final Fantasy bombed an entire decade and Skyrim and Witcher and whatever else don't have staying power. maybe Mass Effect 2 has a chance, but then it got demolished last time around.

maybe FF7 remake coming out during the contest does something.

Maybe, but I don't know what else it would be. I don't see Skyrim winning on this site when all the chips are down unless it gets a rally. Most of the site owns a Switch though, so I imagine people have played BotW.

An elegant way of expressing why BotW is so popular in the first place.

Also, if Allen takes the same anti-rally measures he did for the last contest, the only game I see with a plausible shot at the favorite is Skyrim. It keeps getting re-released and was easily the most popular game from 2010-2016. Other than that, I agree with Leon. We're probably not getting a rally-threat, which means BotW enters this as the huge heavy.

yeah, I guess my thinking on BOTW is only in relation to other games that people care about. like, put it against Majora or another classic that people played as kids and I bet BOTW gets worked. its like the old Tetris argument where it would fold against anything decent. but since that kind of game cant exist in this tournament, itll probably double everything outside of Smash.

Skyrim still had serious strength in BGE 2015 and while we're going to be at least 4 years removed from our last Games Contest, it shouldn't be enough for Skyrim to simply fall off a cliff.

I'm chucking at a dartboard here, but I'd guess Undertale might be... fringe top ten at best without a rally? Absolutely nothing caught a meaningful rally during the last Character Battle, and this was despite numerous attempts to rally every fucking entrant, including (correct me if I'm wrong) Sans, who got destroyed by Pac-Man.

I know 2013 and 2015 left us shell-shocked, but it's been almost five years since that last games contest, and based on the two contests since then, I really feel Allen wants that rally-door to remain closed. I'll be predicting this bracket with the assumption that zero rally attempts gain traction.

Witcher 3 will be interesting to see. that game is in the middle of a renaissance. you could argue for it being #2 in this contest though its a lot easier to just pick Nintendo and not worry about anything else.

LFF due to the presence of all the 3D Zeldas would explain Link to the Past winning that poll. The only possible case that could be made for Majora > BotW would be if Majora was being hurt by the presence of OoT in that poll.

youre higher on Smash Ultimate than I am, though I do kinda feel like people would vote for anything with Smash on the title because theyre all largely the same. Skyrim... maybe, but I would take any game from the glory years with a notable fanbase over it. Metroid Prime, Mario RPG, Metal Gear 1-3, 6 different FFs, etc.

BotW would storm well beyond the top 50 on like... any major vg site. There's a difference between flavor of the month (or year) and tons of gamers waxing poetic about a game, saying crap like "this is the first game that's recaptured that sense of magic since I was a kid."

Beyond that and Skyrim (and possibly ME2, Smash Ultimate, Odyssey?), things take a real tumble, but I'm not too worried. It's not like there was THAT much firepower in the last GotD, and it wound up being one of the best contests we've ever had.

I know Games =/= Characters, but something happened to turn Zelda from....Zelda to beating everyone except Link, because let's face it, if it weren't for the second chance bracket, she beats Cloud without much of a sweat.

I think it shouldn't have any problem getting into a contest like this, assuming a bracket of at least 128 games. The average game strength in this contest is going to be even lower than the last GotD.

I 100% agree with you on both a personal and professional level. Breath of the Wild is amazing, as I've expounded in the last couple of weeks. but the difference here is that I don't think this website is a major vg site at all. it's become the nichiest of the niche, for people who like old things the way they were. so while it is the best, it's more that everything else is kind of the worst.

and that's why I think this comment, while correct, is misleading. yeah, Breath of the Wild is a killer. but it's really only a killer because nothing else moved the needle at all.

it's kind of a pointless debate though because nothing will touch Breath of the Wild and those other games aren't in the competition. it's like how we got the impression that Majora's Mask was a killer after GOTD but that was mostly because the top tiers sat that contest out. the only difference is that this contest is one rung lower on the totem pole and we're going to look at Majora like we used to look at Ocarina in comparison to the strength we're going to see here.

sorry to be a negative nancy. it's good to see people still care though! I didn't know if any of us honestly cared about something like this, so that's good that we can at least work up the spirit to disagree.

Majora's Mask really is one of the strongest games on the site. After GotD1 a lot of people thought it sinificantly overperformed due OoT not being around. But MM held up well even against Lttp. I don't think there were many that expected more than that.
