Was the polling close this time? I thought the Tories had been pretty decisively ahead ever since the Brexit Party voters realized their best shot to get Brexit was to vote Tory.

If the Democrats make big gains in both deep blue and deep red states and wind up at like +5 in the national popular vote and still lose by just as much as last time or more because they make no gains in swing states, I am going to laugh so hard.

Watching Sky TV right now. Lots of people talking about how Labour is becoming a party of the metropolitan cities only, losing its traditional blue collar heartland in the North of England. Yup, they've followed the Democrats down the road to electoral destruction!

I have a feeling California will be significantly more blue. Texas closer, etc. But it won't matter much.

Iowa and Arizona polls have Trump dunking on every Dem candidate. Michigan Wisconsin and PA polls have been favorable regarding impeachment and Wisconsin specifically very favorable in polls against Dem candidates. Whether polls are accurate, that's another situation. Fox News was the highest watched news station in like 80% of districts across the nation I believe it was. So that kind of points to significant consumption of conservative slanting media.

While it's very likely Trump is, it's also likely some democrats like Sanders are underrepresented for the same reasons. There's really just 3 candidates who can beat trump and the party hates one of them (Tulsi), ignores one of them (Yang), and will do anything possible to avoid the last, even if it means losing (Sanders). Despite that one is posing an actual risk and the other two make for interesting VP options so it ain't safe.

I will say, I think this 2020 election may be the last chance for Democrats to support Bernie and win the socialist vote. Another round of 2016 and the socialist left will probably vote Republican for a generation.

Hillary and McCain had virtually identical platforms focused on "experience" and centrism, so not surprising.

I am not saying that in 2024 Republicans will win a majority of the socialist vote. But they will win more than in 2020, and more in 2020 than 2016, and after 2020 the train will have left the station and it will be very hard to pull it back. It's a very strong feedback loop as socialists lose more and more power within the Democratic Party even while the Republican Party sees them as the key to electoral victory and treats them as first class citizens.

I think the fear for such representatives is that it 100% opens up them up to a primary challenge, and for many Republicans (and Congresspeople in general) the primary is their only competitive election and such a vote very well could sink them to a far-right challenge. Taking Amash as an example he was literally run out of the party over this well before any such votes were taking place, simply his stating his support for them.

Amash has bona fides as a vocal Tea Party guy. I think he is fairly confident he can't be primaried from the right. And he's probably right.

well technically he can't be primaried at all anymore since he left the party. but he was facing an immediate primary challenge before he did that and polling wasn't looking great for him. like down 10-16 points bad.

I think it's very important to count Amash as a Republican for this purpose! He was a Republican when he came out for impeachment, and coming out for impeachment was the reason he was driven out of the party. Allowing him to be classified as not-a-Republican allows the Republicans to continue to claim that there's no bipartisan support for impeachment, when in fact there was until they decided to make it a vacuously true statement by demanding that anyone who supports impeaching Trump leave the party.
