Funimation uploaded the first two uncut BD episodes of Zombie Land Saga, complete with the songs being English dubbed as well. Now I can finally hear the infamous rap battle scene in English, and the rest of the episodes will be uploaded when the BD comes out in (I think) January.

Watched the first episode of Kaliedo Star. Not a bad start. Sora is adorkable. Her dub voice is kinda annoying sounding, but nothing major. Will give a better impression after several more episodes.

Yeah, Sora's English voice takes some getting used to, especially with how energetic she is. It kind of reminded me of how Brittney Karbowski played that annoying idiot Himeko in Pani Poni Dash, but I know it's not Brittney Karbowski playing Sora. EDIT: Yep, someone else.

She voiced a different character in Pani Poni Dash though (maybe I was just misremembering) as well as Lina Inverse in Slayers and Ilya in the Prisma Ilya anime, which I didn't even know had a dub.

Japanese VA's that actually train and practice singing VS english VA's that just use the same voice and tone for every character they dub and probably have dubious background on any sort of singing training?

That part is wrong and you fucking know it. Yes, most English VA's have a certain kind of role that they're most popular for, but a lot of them have tons of range and can play other roles too. If you really think that Index from A Certain Magical Index has "the same voice and tone" as Mereoleona Vermillion from Black Clover just because they're both voiced by Monica Rial, then you're either completely deaf or completely full of shit.

You're right that most dub VA's don't. For this ZLS dub, I know for an absolute fact that Brina Palencia (who's voicing Sakura) and Amanda Lee (who's voicing Junko) have prior singing training, but I don't know about any of the others in the cast. I've heard Brina sing in an anime before too:

She was the first VA that came to mind when I thought of VA's with crazy range, and those were the two roles of hers that sounded the most different to me.

There should be a setting somewhere (I think it's in the individual episode rather than the series) to change it from "simulcast" to "uncut". I used the FunimationNow app on Xbox One to watch, so I don't know where the setting is on the website itself.

Just thought of another example of crazy range from a dub VA: the aforementioned Brittney Karbowski. Unlike in the Japanese version of Index/Railgun, where all of the different Misakas have different VA's, Brittney Karbowski voices all of them herself in the dub. She voices Mikoto Misaka with a tomboyish voice (the voice she's most famous for these days), the Misaka "sisters" with perfect emotionless deadpan, Last Order with a super cutesy voice, and Misaka Worst with a murderous psychopath voice, all in the same series. They don't sound very much alike, but all of them are her.

I gave you two excellent examples of VA's being able to take two drastically different tones, and there are plenty more out there, but you probably don't watch enough English dubs (or any at all?) to realize that. Yes, typecasting happens. But to say that dub VA's are completely incapable of voicing characters outside of those typecasts well is blatantly wrong.

Has anyone figured out how to cite under the new posting engine? I had to switch back to the old one to do Seasonal Charts, Image Galleries and the Topic Reserve list, thus the YT specific theme. ImageFAQs would allow offsite image embedding with the old engine but ugly links for those without it, new engine has uploads but as far as I can tell doesn't do nested quotes/citations

I agree with that to an extent, Cookie. Even some of my favorite VA's could start to sound worse through overexposure, and some of the biggest names like Rial or Chris Sabat are already approaching that territory. Thankfully, I've been noticing more new names in the cast lists of recent simuldubs, and the fact that Funimation is no longer the only studio doing timely dubs (Sentai Filmworks has been getting into simuldubbing, and Crunchyroll has been using Bang Zoom as their dubbing studio to get faster dubs made) has been bringing more new voices into the fold as well.

I had barely heard of the dude they got to voice Koutarou before this year (he's also Kazuma in Konsuba and Taiju in Dr. Stone) but I had heard multiple people who watched the ZLS dub say that he managed to out-ham Mamoru Miyano in the role, which is no small feat.

I tried the new posting engine once and disliked it, then went back to the old one. The built-in image uploading isn't worth it because it doesn't even support gifs or larger file sizes, plus they fixed the built-in embedding for Imgur and of course ImageFAQs is still a thing.

I've seen several clips of the subbed version and Mamoru Miyano was fantastic in that, but the first couple of scenes I've watched in the dub were right up there in ham levels too. I can't pick out which one is better and hammier yet, but they're pretty close to me.

Matt mercer, Troy Baker, Laura Bailey, Christina Vee, you hear them once and then you recognize them in every game they voiced a character, and as much as i love Vee, she sounds the same on almost every character she voices, there's just not enough people...
