@GenesisSaga I watched it. It's good. I probably would've liked it more if I watched them all at once rather than monthly, since it's a fairly complex show.

I probably liked the book version better though, and the adapation only covers the first book (which isn't quite the best book in the series).

Holy shit what a simple but satisfying chapter.

Astra Lost in Space beated. Kinda disappointing show. The premise were fun, but the cast was weak. Most of them were basically forgotten in the second half, too. Everything about the show felt super simplistic to me, like it was written for 10 year olds (which I guess it was, since it's from a shounen magazine, but I guess shounen adaptations are usually of simpler premises). Managed to be another one of those series where the adults are basically all evil/useless. The humor was pretty good early on, but I felt that wore off fairly quickly. And then the ending kinda sucked. We're going to bring back this technology that wiped out half the world's population, but it's definitely going to go perfectly this time! Seriously? Blah.

I finished the first two seasons of Chihayafuru. Now I'm going to wait a bit before starting the third season because if I catch up in the middle of an intense match it'll drive me crazy.

Before my spoilered comments, I'll just say that it was really good! The karuta games were always intense, and I liked all of the major characters (and all of the side characters except Yumin, who thankfully wasn't in it very much). There were a few small things that annoyed me, mostly about karuta intricacies. Still, those were all minor issues. Overall, it was a great anime.

The anime mostly made karuta a lot of fun to watch, but there are a few aspects of it I'm not a fan of. Yumin represented a lamer side to it with her constant challenges. I basically never enjoyed it when that mechanic came up. Thankfully, Chihaya has no knack for contesting so it never happened often. I also didn't like the humongous advantage that came from the players being familiar with the reader. Rion gave Chihaya trouble when literally her grandmother was reading, then she got destroyed by Taichi when someone else was reading. They acted like the reader infusing emotion into the words was a mark of quality, but IMHO it's just unfair. They should have a text-to-voice program randomly read these things and get the biased human readers out of karuta.

As for the characters, it was great watching them all grow, both individually and as a team. The three winning the individual tournaments at the end was nice to see because I knew the long road all of them had taken to get there.

I spoke about the love triangle earlier and I didn't have an opinion then, but this has changed. Both Taichi and Arata are great guys, so initially I was fine with either one. However, the introduction of Hanano and an early conversation with Taichi was what changed it for me. Taichi said he wanted to choose who he devoted himself to (or something, I forget the exact line). So he likes Chihaya, and Arata probably liked Chihaya because otherwise there's no actual conflict. However, it seems pretty clear that Chihaya likes Arata. She's chosen to devote herself to him. Sorry Taichi, you lose by your own rules. Team Arata all the way!

Looks like Winter will be a good season for me. I'll 100% watch the new Madoka, and I'm very likely to watch Railgun S3 and Kyouko Suiri since I like both of those.

dont know about the anime but I think the manga does a good job of showing that the grandma reader is really unfair in how she reads. The first time we see her they even emphasize that most top readers intentionally dont do it her way because they dont want to give an unfair advantage but she just doesnt care. That's why the Meijin likes her, she gives him an advantage. Same with Rion, Chihaya, and in part the other teammate who admires her. It is definitely not a mark of quality but a thing that separates her from most other top level readers. It makes it nicer to listen to but gives a big advantage to certain players.

Don't think I mentioned it in here, but I read through Hanebado a few weeks back. Pretty good manga! The early parts have a lot of weird comedy and fanservice that doesn't work very well, but the author forgets about that and makes it a lot more serious after a couple volumes. The later content is mostly great, so it's too bad we won't get more anime to cover it. I did like the anime version more, though. I think it did better at portraying Ayano's evil style, and it had less Connie. The end of the manga seems to think that the reader cares more about Connie than most of the main characters for some reason, but she was never particularly interesting to me, and didn't really earn her place in the conclusion.

I like Hanebado too, though I wasn't aware the ending had been translated yet?

The matches with Nagisa were easily the high points of the series, although Ayano's nastiness was also very fun.
