So I finished Ciconia episode 1 last night. tldr version while I enjoyed it overall I don't necessarily think it made a good introduction when compared to Higurashi or Umineko episode 1. It also might not appeal to Higurashi or Umineko fans, since it's completely different. There isn't any mystery or whodunnit element to Ciconia and instead it's literally Ryukisi trying to write Evangelion. It definitely made a better (or at least more entertaining) introduction than Umineko Ep 1 specifically imo. I also like the dog, especially when it was doing the wrestling moves with him. It's very silly and for the most part pretty good but it's also at a level of sheer out there stupid that I just kind of tilt my head at it too. I did like though the girl he saved just ended up being a loser and how he completely realized it despite her being an animal girl. Cautious Hero -I thought this was pretty good. The mc might just be someone who is built to fit the show and not much else but as for the base overall and how his interaction with the goddess went it was pretty spot on. I liked the slime part. Ahiru no Sora -So, this is the next sports show that is trying to cash in on the Haikyuu format of having some undersized character who is especially good at a sport trying to take a team to the next level or whatever. I'm not saying Haikyuu was the first show that has done this, but it's 100% the most popular one that has come out in the decade. (I also know that this source for this actual show is pretty old but still). But it's like a lot of them understandably just try to cash in on a main character's determination and such and that's not enough to make a show exciting or interesting. Do you know a good way to get you interested in what happens in a show? By building characters people are going to care about. Haikyuu does a very good job at quickly making the characters dynamic enough in the first episode where you are interested in seeing where the show takes them. I just don't really care here. I don't even know what the main characters' actual goals are. I don't know if the basketball team is actually struggling or if it's good and they are just lazy. Or like his background in the sport. I don't really know how much passion for the game has either. Something like this 100% had to be put into the first episode. There is just no hook at all. CHOYOYU! -This show is just not very good. Ascendance of a Bookworm -This is another show that is not very good, but at least it's a little more interesting and bearable than Choyoyu. The animation quality is just so bad though. This is like what I'd call on the edge of keep/drop. ORESUKI -So after the first confession, it was like okay. The second one it was fine. But the third one when she pulled out the bench that might be a top 10 anime moment of the year. Great show. Afterschool Dice Club -This was fine? A bit underwhelming as I do wish it kind of moved a little focus away from how shy and insecure the main girl is (which I'm fine with) and had more actual playing the board game or whatever. I have seen a list of games they play throughout the original source material and there are quite a lot of very recognizable board games they do play, but some of them we might not get to see on the screen because they come later into the run. Azur Lane -Ship waifu show. Nothing great, nothing awful. The "bad" ships are the better waifus. Chuuni Boys -There is this sense I have that this show almost already seems outdated. I'm obviously going to compare this to Chuu2 (and yes the girl is voiced by Fake Mori Summer). That show had a cast of chuunis but their dynamic, how they are introduced, etc was just done better. I don't really know anything about anyone except the girl in this show and I barely know anything about her. It's not enough just to have characters act like chuunis to carry the entire show (or in this case episode). Fate/Grand Order -I saw the episode 0 before this and was kind of annoyed at it because I really like Mash but it's like they spend more time TALKING ABOUT HER than she has actual screen time in the episode. I enjoyed his overall personality compared to the aura he tends to give off around other people. Like this legitimately had some pretty funny parts to it. I don't think this is going to be good or anything, but it's not terrible. Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun -This was great. When they started to sing the school anthem I was sold. Special Crime Investigation Unit - Special 7 -Do you know how many of these "paranormal investigation" shows have been good? Like not many. At least the last one I remember (forget the name) but at least Midnight Occult Civil Servants had enough to mix it up a little. This just seems way too straight forward and overly phoned in. Actors: Songs Connection -So, Ensemble Stars was last season and that was interesting or at least entertaining enough where it lasted 3 entire episodes. This one doesn't. Noukin -Cute moe show. The start is pretty bad honestly and most of the show is only okay until you get closer to the end. The obvious comparison is going to be Endro (which is a great show). Like the characters here are not at that level so far. Africa no Salaryman (TV) -Do you want to watch a comedy that is both not funny and not very relatable? Here you go. Phantasy Star Online 2: Episode Oracle -So, I thought this was like not the worst thing ever until the fucking girl like floats down from the sky. Why couldn't she like fall or something that would make more sense, or they could have her in a like capsule or something. But no she has to float. It just takes you out of everything that has happened. Not to mention that dude just has a "sense" for stuff, which I'm sure is going to be explained later but they also draw a ton of attention to it. Stand My Heroes: Piece of Truth -So I watched this only because I saw how low the score was. Like, let me tell you, even if the dialogue and characters in this show were amazing (they are not, they are both completely bland as hell) this show would still be awful because it has some of the laziest animation direction and editing I have ever seen in a show. Every fucking shot is like if someone took 1 class for how to compose a frame or something and used that for the entire show. When like the entire thing is cut back and forth between who is talking for entire scenes, doesn't take advantage as animation as a medium, colors are not really portrayed that well, etc. This is one of the worst first episodes I have ever seen. Babylon -So, this is something where based on what has happened in the show so far I can see this being interesting moving forward, that said as an actual episode I'm not as impressed. I think it's trying to be a more serious style mystery but when you just toss in "we are doing this for justice" etc it just seems kind of silly. Kandagawa Jet Girls -This show is dumb. Honestly, even I, who really likes the genki girl, got kind of annoyed by the main character. This is kind of like keijo meets that flying sports show (both shows I really like) but this one already seems like it doesn't quite have the soul those have. I did like the whole thing with the dolphin toy though. Assassins Pride -I was very impressed by this. They really portray the Melindas determination and overall personality very well. They don't have a ton of time to establish a connection with her but they really make it so you want her to succeed from the getgo. Even though the overall way they do it is pretty by the numbers if you've realized a lot shows don't even do this. I don't think I really have to talk about this I'm going to assume everyone is watching this. No Guns Life -This was another good first episode. I like how this is not quite a "mystery" but I'm more interested in finding out what happened to these characters like Juuzou and who is behind everything than I am in finding out what is happening in the actual mystery show. I also like how gunhead has those reactions with the well... gunhead. Hoshiai no Sora -This a sports show that introduces characters as people first and give them personalities and something to work against or some sort of conflict where you want to follow their stories instead of just tossing them in with all the passion in the world. This was a really good first episode. MHA S4 -Mostly like a recap episode. I do like though how they mostly handle it. LET THE WAIFU WARS BEGIN. Food Wars S4 -This is the only show here where I have read way past the anime. TBH I actually thought they already did this arc for some reason. Pretty hype matches coming up... and then all hope is lost. Cooking Master Boy -This just moves so quickly. They mix in like a kind of match between the kid and his rival in with a back story of this girl whose brother like died from being overworked or being sick (not really sure) I don't know. Into saving the restaurant for his dreams like in the a few minutes. On top of that they don't actually show any of the cooking etc. It's almost unfathomable how many shortcuts this show took to finish up this in 1 episode. Kabukichou Sherlock -So like 12 minutes in and I don't really know who anyone is. There are no real proper introductions etc. I can't tell if some characters are there as jokes or actually important characters. It also doesn't really help that they don't really do anything for those 12 minutes or so. If this ends up being a good adaptation it will easily become one of my favorite anime. I love the atmosphere and presentation of it and the ones that had like the movie looking widescreen or whatever were cool. The story went in directions I wasnt expecting and they were nice surprises. The cast was also solid. Kanata quickly makes himself captain of the group, but over time he truly earns it by going above and beyond for his crew/family. Hes always willing to hear their problems and believes in them. He doesnt hesitate to plunge himself into danger to help any of them. Hes just an overall good guy. Zack is the brains/tech expert of the group and later on he gets some amazing scenes that make him a contender for best character in the show. Luca is an interesting character that can quickly befriend anyone and also has some pretty funny teasing moments.
