I don't like paying a delivery charge and tip that costs close to what the meal I ordered did. I'd much rather take a walk to go get it. It's only worth it if you're ordering for a bunch of people

Convenient but expensive

I typically use postmates if I dont want to go or cook but only if I have a promo code to get free delivery

I used to use it all the time on my days off because I enjoy being lazy on my days off.

But as somebody in the restaurant business I recognize that the people who would normally get tipped for putting that shit together are now basically working for free because the DoorDash people dont give them any of the tip that theyre going to get.

But I also dont care sometimes and just wanna be lazy

Each has their own advantages, some are better than others.

Uber Eats over all is usually the cheapest, if your just ordering for 1 person.

Why?

Many places near you will have no delivery charge and then a 15% charge based on your total order, with no min amount.

So if you order food for yourself for $10, net total cost would be about $13 including tip (if you tip only $1.50).

But wait..there's more. Uber eats is also the only one (I know of ) that offers deals/specials, if you scroll down the list of places near you, it will list a few with deals like "Spend 10$ or more and get $3 off, spend 30$ and get 11$ off etc). The 15% comes after the discount as well, so for instance Mings Palance near me has spend $30 and get $11 off, no delivery charge, so I can order $30 worth of food (it's actually about $33), and I only end up paying about $28 total (22 base + $3.30 + $3 tip).

Which means I'm actually getting it for less then if I ate at the store (not even including tip there).

Grubhub sucks over all but give alot of coupons discounts (like $10 off your order etc), which work for anywhere that delivers through grubhub. They cost alot for delivery though, so in most cases it just evens out the delivery cost (so you get your food delivered for free). Lets you have lots of options though where you get your food....which is nice).

Doordash and postmates have alot of variety, but they usually don't deliver as far as uber eats, and are only really a good option if your ordering for a group of people, or very expensive food. Pretty much if your order is over 40$, your probably better off with door dash or postmates since the 15% from uber becomes more then the delivery charge from door dash etc.

In the end, you can pretty much get good food delivered to your door for around 3-5$ in most cases, from one place or another, and in some cases it's free, or even cheaper then if you went out. Uber delivers from VERY far away...including many pizza places that have a smaller normal delivery range. The sad thing is a place like Salamone's (good pizza in my area...finally found some) actually delivers themselves, just not nearly as far as I am, but they charge 5$ for close deliveries and $8 for long distance ones (again not as far as me). Uber eats though charges 2.99 (because it's far away) and 15% of the total bill ($20 gives you a large multiple topping pizza, so 3$). So I can get a pizza through uber eats for 6$ delivered about 10 miles away.

Basically it rocks, but is dangerous cause you could easily stop going out all together, get your grocereis delivered, your food delivered and never see people longer then it takes to grab a bag.

Ill die before paying a processing fee and then paying for the delivery charge and THEN paying the tip.

My housemates literally order food every day. Even from the Mcdonalds thats a 5 minute walk from our place. I just... dont understand it. Eating out is fine, but theyre spending more on delivery fees and tips in a week than I spend on food for a whole month.

It should be mentioned that the tip is often pretty close to the same as if you actually ate there, instead of at home, and many of the services have very low (or even no) delivery costs. In fact it can sometimes be cheaper to have it delivered, then eating out.

Another.....big...consideration is how much is your time worth.

As an example, you can order food from uber eats form 30 minutes away, pay 0$ in delivery fee, 15% of your total bill, and tip the driver.

Say your food is 20$ cause you freaking love food, and you pay for the good stuff.

If you drove there to eat, it would be 30-40 minutes each way, then you have to go in, order the food, wait 20+ minutes for them to make it, and finally eat. So lets say between driving and waiting your total time is 1 1/2 hours.

Cost wise if you eat there and pay 15% tip, (we'll say the $20 includes taxes already) it's $23 total. There is of course the cost of gas added in, which is probably at least $2 in gas (depends on how much gas is but it's almost $4 a gallon here, so 1/2 a gallon (or less then 10 miles in my car etc). So total actual cost is $25 and 90 minutes of your time.

Or you can get it delivered from uber eats, you stay at home watch shows etc, and can see where the driver is and tell just as they drive up to go grab the food.

Cost is 20$ base + 15% of that is $3 + 3$ tip, or 26$ total. That is $1 more then if you went there yourself, but you get to eat at home, while watching tv etc, in comfort, with your own drinks etc. You can stay home and relax after eating instead of having to drive back while full etc.

So yeah, in many cases uber eats at least is better than eating out (especially if it's only for one person). The other ones have a flat delivery fee (although there are ways to get around them as well), which is better for larger orders, for multiple people etc.

I don't like an. Ive never used them but the idea seems awful. I've seen stories of people who got their food stolen with no recourse or getting what you deserve but it being painful calling customer service.

That and the drivers being essentially pick it up or leave it temp help and i dont feel like i need to support these businesses. Pizza delivery isn't exactly a high skill job but they've found a way to make it like that with an even lower bar.

Not for me.

Really weird. I work as a delivery driver for a restaurant, and I know that the insurance for us drivers costs a lot and many people aren't willing to pay our relatively cheap delivery fee, so i don't get how a third party delivery service can do it so well.

I just don't get why so many people are willing to spend enough on delivery for friking Mcdonalds to allow a regular service for that t exist. Unless doordash drivers just make like no money

Pretty much. The cut they take from food sales is pretty significant. From the industry side of things, they're really only worthwhile if you have cheaper food and relatively few deliveries, such that paying a delivery driver to be on call would therefore be more expensive than the 25-30% cut they ask.
