What was the item and why did you spend so much on it?

For me it would probably be a hand crafted Go set imported from Japan, a few grand. And because it is pretty :D

Not counting vehicles, since everyone's answer would be car or house otherwise, probably some piece of furniture. My bedroom set, including mattress, was like $3000.

If we don't count furniture either, probably my PC, which total cost to build I think was around $1500. I built it like 8 years ago now though, and have only replaced the graphics card, so I can't remember exactly what I paid to build it.

Homes, vehicles, furniture, appliances, etc. Granted, for entertainment and personal stuff, I don't like spending much. My 40-in Roku TV -- which I've used maybe twice -- I paid $150 for... and like a month later got a free 32" tv because that shit always happens.

One of my laptops I paid $550 for, but I was in a hurry. Another was only $330, but it was a disco'd model that was starting to go on clearance (the first time I used something an AMD processor), which was a decent value. And I picked up a $200 kinda crappy laptop some time before that, which is partly why I went with the $330.

Dynalo posted...

I'm guessing you went with a bargain mattress, since a lot of mattresses can run $3k by themselves... and those aren't even the most expensive ones >_>

Granted, $3000 is probably a reasonable spend for a bedroom. That's like $1800 for the mattress and $1200 for the furniture, or vice versa.

Eh I got my truck for free (inheritance) and ive always been able to make arrangements where im just paying someone else rent to live with them fairly cheap. So for me im not sure either a video game console or handing over money to my mom to help her fix her vehicle when it broke down cause she didnt have a job at the time. She paid me back slowly over time though I count her buying me anything not on my birthday or christmas as going towards what she owed though. She insisted on paying me back so I decided to let her do it that way.

Maybe if you left your home and actually went to stores you'd realize that good mattresses are expensive. Sure, you can order a $120 6" foam mattress-in-a-box or stop at your local Goodwill to pick up a mattress for about $150, but you get what you pay for.

A reasonably good mattress is usually going to run you around $1800 at least. There are some decent-quality memory foams out there that you can get for less than $1500, but when you start to look at quality, you're going to be paying around $3k. And $3k isn't even the really expensive stuff. I take it you've never gone mattress or furniture shopping before, though.

Well, the single most expensive item in my home (that isn't part of the fittings installed by the landlord, I've no clue what the boiler etc cost) is my present electric wheelchair, a Sunrise Medical Salsa R-squared model - nicknamed "Ripley" (ask my brother!) - which has segmented powered tilt, Jay custom back for spinal support, padded calf support, padded & adjustable winged headrest, and swing-out footplates. All in all, she cost something around 6,500, brand new.

I don't know the precise figure because, mercifully(!), my local NHS mobility centre funded it for me. I'd never have been able to afford it without that! My first powerchair was a
secondhand Invacare Harrier Plus I found on eBay, and even that cost me a cool 650. That's one of the things that frustrates me most about needing a powerchair: people with mobility needs are essentially a captive market, so manufacturers rip us off for whatever figure they like, with absolute impunity.

Why spend so much on my expensive item? Well, in this case I'd've thought the answer fairly obvious! =P

It feels weird having to explain this to an alleged adult who presumably has been alive at least 25 years now, but a box spring isn't a mattress, it's a foundation you put under your mattress. >_>

If I gave you the benefit of the doubt, I might assume that you meant an innerspring/coil mattress, but I'm really getting the impression that you've never had to shop for a new mattress because salesmen run through this shit with you.

$600 is a low-end mattress. There are some serviceable mattresses for $600, but I'd hesitate to call them decent. Of course, if you're buying bargain $150 innerspring mattresses -- which, by the way, is less than some people pay for a good PILLOW --- I'm sure a $600 mattress is going to look just awesome to you. Meanwhile even the lowest-end Tempur-Pedic is more than $1800 (which isn't to say that there aren't some nice mattresses you can get for $1800)

While there's a lot of stuff you can skimp on while furnishing a home, I wouldn't cut corners on a mattress.

Most of the $3k mattresses are ones with insane lifespans. They last much longer than the cheaper models so it's less a matter of a $3k mattress vs a $800 one, but instead a $3k vs two or three $800 ones. My uncle had a Tempur-Pedic for at least 25 years and it still seemed to be in excellent shape when he had to downsize because he was going into a nursing home.

Depends on the person. My grandad for whatever reason preferred beds that where hard as a rock imo. Would literally bitch about a bed being too soft when it was a typical mattress. So his mattresses where pretty cheap but its what he wanted.

DHL screwed up and delivered it to the wrong house, so Dell shipped out another one. Meanwhile DHL managed to track down the missing package, recovered it, and delivered it about a week late. I called and e-mailed Dell about it, but couldn't get through to anyone who wanted to do something about it, so after a week I just gave up and kept the second laptop.

Definitely not bargain, but not top tier either.

The mattress was about $1200, without the box spring (since I didn't need a box spring with the bed that I bought). If memory serves, I think it was around 1500-1600 with the box spring. It's very comfortable though and has shown no signs of wear in the ~2.5 years I've had it... Though granted, I travel so much that I have probably only spent about 1.5 years sleeping on it.

Good luck claiming that "7 year warranty" you're seeing on a $150 mattress. It's probably not even as reliable as a Bob's "Goof-Proof" protection plan.

The difference between a low-end mattress warranty and a high-end one is not just that you're less likely to need the high-end's, but you can actually count on it.
