It leads to the obvious question: Can a rally ever happen again on our site? I think so, but this just wasn't the year for it. Simple as that.

I don't think Character Battles are the ideal type of contest for a major rally to catch fire. Fanbases don't seem to care about the characters to the same extent as the actual games they are from. Draven in 2013 was a rare exception. L-Block in 2007 was technically a rally as well, but most of L-Block's success was driven by bandwagon strength on GameFAQs.

I think it's easier for a fanbase to put their support behind a game than a character. The next GotD contest is a potential ground for a huge rally to take hold, as the average strength of the games will be the lowest we've ever seen in any contest. Any game with huge rally potential can build up rally strength against most games in the next GotD contest, unless it's put up against one of the juggernauts like Skyrim, Smash Ultimate, or BotW in round 1.

Weapon durability is a decent mechanic for an open world sandbox, but BOTW's ludicriously fragile swords with no method of repairing or extending their shelf life was brutal. All it did was have me actively avoiding combat in fear of all my gear not last through the fights and getting stuck fighting with Korok leafs and torches.

The purpose is to prevent you from grabbing one powerful weapon at the start of the game and just using it the entire time.

To be honest, there's no point worrying about weapon durability because the moment you drop off the Great Plateau, you're swarmed with items. People complained about the "your wallet is full, so let's put it back" notifications in Twilight Princess, but I've had several times more "Your inventory is full." notifications in BotW when trying to pick up shields/weapons than I did those TP notifications, or even the Skyward Sword notifications with item descriptions for items you've already collected. That's how often the game throws stuff at you to prevent weapon durability from ever being an issue. It's not even an issue in Master Mode where enemies get health regen and are all upgraded by one tier at the start of the game, at least it wasn't for me.

Basically, yes. Plus chests everywhere to find in the overworld, as well as shrine enemies and chests. I can't conceivably see anybody running out of weapons unless they never explore anything they see in the overworld, or they purposefully let enemies regen in master mode to empty their inventory.

BOTW doesn't really have dungeons to speak of, and what passes for dungeons hardly have any enemies.

that's one of the real problems with that game.

I haven't played only 1 Zelda game, which is LTTP, but weapon durability is NEVER a good idea WITHOUT a way to repair them! Fallout 3 and New Vegas had weapon durability but you could repair them at least!

And I honestly don't hate Overwatch. I don't like it, but I don't hate it. That game's major issue is you have these 5v5 fights but the matches are way too short. It shouldn't be an hour like a moba, but Overwatch is the other extreme where you have a frenetic pace and things are done in less than 5 minutes. That's not enough time to really sink your teeth into a match or get to know your teammates. The other issue is Blizzard's bizarre ban policies like allowing people to get banned for picking off meta stuff (if enough people report a player, they're banned no matter what, kind of like how GameFAQs works and you never want to emulate our trash moderation system). It's a game I *want* to like, but it doesn't let me. It's kind of like a lap dance. You start enjoying yourself and the girl goes 'time's up, 20 dollars please'. I'll take the escort and an actual fuck next time, thanks.

There's also the fact that compared to Counterstrike or Team Fortress 2, Overwatch is a joke.

Feels weird going back to normal writeups after the behemoth from last match, but hey! It also feels weird talking about Aeris in a 60-40 match with Toad. Is this impressive for Aeris? A failure for Aeris? Just a good performance by Toad? We can't exactly go by the 2007 numbers (the only other time Toad was in a contest) because both characters had SFF everywhere in their matches. I can't reliably go by that Toad number when Bowser was right there.

Besides. That was Toad. This is CAPTAIN Toad! SHOUT OUT TO NICK, STAR OF THE CONTEST AND WINNER OF MY HEART. MAPLE LEAFS GONNA DO IT IN OUR LIFETIME SON.

One thing I do know is that Aeris was the first, and currently the only, 15 seed to win two matches. And given she was up against Fox next, she was going to win three matches before bowing out. It shows how badly seeded we made this bracket, and I say "we" because it was clear Board 8 had way too big an influence here. This bracket had the worst seeding since Current Events decided everything back in 2002, and Aeris being a 15 seed might be the biggest example. But I love giant seeds facing each other and advancing, so hey, more fun for me.

That was a long read.

I remember how Hearthstone went for me. Went into the beta, made a broken OP Priest burn deck, stopped losing entirely, then quit thinking "where is the skill?" As it turned out, the real reason that deck was so overpowered was because it basically removed your RNG handicap whereas your opponent still had to deal with it.

Mother of God, that's a whole lot of vitriol for Blizzard. Maybe they should attempt other old stuff to rejuvenate themselves. I'm all for a new Lost Vikings game! Or maybe a Rock N' Roll Racing remake!

And that opening paragraph with the politics stuff nearly turned me off (I didn't attempt a thorough read of the whole succession of rants, of course; pure bile has a limit...), specially in seeing the word "communist" being thrown out so early*. Politics are already nasty in my country. This year, it became unbearable. And most of the people who elected a bigoted, angry,and for all intents unprepared moron as President liked to say he would prevent communism from taking over, something that was never a threat, even when there was an actual socialist guerrillla here (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Araguaia_Guerrilla_War ). I agree that leftists are annoying idiots, but the right-wing equivalents downright depress me at times.

I played Overwatch for a while but eventually went back to TF2. Every overwatch game has to be as competitive as possible and you have people screaming over the mic for every little mistake I make. Some people may like the competitive aspect but I would rather have the choice to be stupid or full tryhard whenever I feel like it.

That was around 2 years ago though, idk if this has changed
