So yeah, Nightingale's really not horror at all (though plenty of horrific things happen), but a period war drama/revenge story. It's kinda reminiscent of Bone Tomahawk or The Missing, where you have an unlikely team venturing through treacherous, newly-settled/colonized land whose indigenous people are still fighting to keep. Really solid performances from everyone involved (cool to see the actor who briefly appeared as Charles Manson in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood get a significant role) - the main female protagonist, her indigenous companion, and the main villain were particularly good. Definitely recommend it from a historical & storytelling standpoint.

Obviously it's wildly different from The Babadook, but there is one particular scene - a dream sequence - which mirrors a scene in The Babadook (a male character, who the female protagonist has seen die, stands in the shadows and creepily repeats the same line over and over).

If you want to see Damon Herriman in a great role you should definitely watch Justified! Also interestingly he appeared as Charles Manson too in the show Mindhunter.

We checked out Haunt last night, I think it was pretty okay. Very reminiscent of the, I think 2018, film Hellfest since both feature a similar kind of theme. I can't say for sure which was better, since Hellfest has been a while ago now. Again I think I feel confident saying this one was still decent though.

As for 2020 horror, we took in The Turning tonight. Reviews be damned, but I quite liked it.

I didn't see the ending coming at all. I realize there were signs for it throughout the film yet I figured this film was heading down the usual road of "escape the house" especially since it actually gave us the false ending and made me believe it was all real. Even if you don't like the film, I think that it definitely creates a talking point and is a conversation piece given the rather unique nature of the ending for a horror film, especially a haunting/ghost type of film.

The acting was on point for the entire main cast. Wolfhard really brings the creep factor well here; it's pretty unnerving throughout. I recommend it even though it appears few others are.

I hear it's entirely too long and boring to be as stupidly fun as Truth or Dare. And that Fantasy Island is just a movie where they throw a bunch of entirely unpredictable twists at the end.

it was super dumb but a fun time

made no goddamn sense and constantly contradicted its own logic and absolutely goes real dumb with some of the twists.

Genny works in a theater and I get to see them for free; unfortunately The Lodge was not picked up by her theater since it's not a wide release as those two were. We had to pay at AMC tonight to see it on one of our anniversaries. It's definitely the best of the year so far, head and shoulders above the rest, but much like John I thought Fantasy Island was actually quite enjoyable.

I'd only give The Lodge a "great" review and only The Grudge a "bad" review. Between that you have varying levels of decent to mediocrity.

Okay, I am glad there was a good reason for it.

I'm glad you enjoyed The Lodge! I thought it was just so freaking tense the whole time and there were a lot of really good directorial choices.

MILD SPOILERS
Like how they treat the girlfriend like a monster for the beginning of the movie. You don't see her for such a long time... the kids look at her with such disdain like she's awful. That whole first act is done so well.

Honestly, I'd talk more about it, because it is such an interesting movie to talk about I think, but I don't want anyone to get spoiled on it. But there's so much small stuff in this movie that's just so expertly done, and they do a great job with this story and you just get such a tense feeling you get with Hereditary the whole time concerning the drama of it all. It honestly felt a lot like It Comes At Night in a lot of ways. I don't know how they did it, but they pulled it off in a movie primarily about two kids and their father's girlfriend in a cabin.

Huge recommend though!

Raw was better than Orphanage. The ending was decent. But it was all kinds of awkward. I figure because it was just foreign. I saw it possibly going a lot of different ways than it did tbqh.

Now that I am thinking about it. Maybe I didn't finish the last 30 minutes of Orphanage because I had to go to work. But, I was very unimpressed with it at that point. Unless the last 30 minutes changes things around then it gets the snorebore from me.

Invisible Man was quite good, easy #2 currently. The Lodge is just a bit more my style of horror film, but Invisible Man definitely takes the cake for most misrepresented horror film I can think of. Never has a trailer made a movie that's actually good look as shitty as that one did. I just can't help but wonder if the trailer hadn't been so ass if the film would have went for $40 million opening weekend. I really think that's possible.

Still, great recovery for Universal. Lower the budget, narrow the scope if your story and the monster films can be great.

wasnt expecting it to be an allegory to what it was. I think VVitch was better. This movie was so slow I had to watch it in pieces because I kept getting tired (this might just be me lately though because even the game I am playing is the same lately).
