It happens. I once had a character (Erika) rule for 1 day. I was confused when it happened because I only got 1 succession menu that said "Long Live Erika" but then the portrait was her heir Morgan.

Jacob's Ladder is fantastic but I do feel that the disturbing aspects of it get over hyped. It's super cool to see how much it's influenced other works like Silent Hill, though!

Watched Cam last night. I've heard super mixed things about it but I actually enjoyed it quite a bit! Definitely feels like it landed the exploration of internet/tech based ideas significantly better than other horror works I could name. (Unfriended being the easy whipping boy on this one, lol.)

Us is fantastic. Will be very hard to top this year. I like how it's basically a zombie movie, but you don't realize it until halfway through.

+ Imposter Syndrome

Really great visuals/cinematography. The twist is actually pretty cool and doesn't feel cheap. The whole 'underground people' thing is kinda goofy, I think some of their backstory would be better left unsaid, but the subtle foreshadowing of what's to come later, and of the twist, is excellent.

https://letterboxd.com/darrencb/list/the-american-horror-revival-2014-present/

so someone gathered together most of the most acclaimed horror movies of the last 5 years, calling it "The American Horror Revival"

it caught my interest because it's something I've thought about quite a bit. It really seems like there's just been a big wave of really, really good horror the last decade, and while there's still plenty of horror trash, it seems like there's a surprising amount that are not only excellent, but decently popular too.

The Pet Sematary remake managed to make Zelda look less-scary, although I suppose the original is hard to top. Some of the ways in which they used her for scares were good. Also having an older child turn evil makes the third act more believable than when they used a 2-year-old. Overall it's probably a little better than the original - more polished with some good additions, just a less scary Zelda, the original version of her still being the scariest thing of either movie imo.

I like the substance of You Were Never Really Here over its style. The story was good but I'm really not interested in constantly cutting to flashbacks, and between what's real and what's not. That Jacob's Ladder type of filmmaking doesn't do it for me.

The energy of the whole thing felt kind of low too, like I was watching a Yorgos Lanthimos movie with a little more going on.

It was interesting but I don't get the rave reviews for it.

so it wasn't actually as bad as I expected. Writing was kind of weak, acting was hit-or-miss, and there's some super unwarranted nudity that felt shoehorned in even by horror standards, but even with all that, I didn't not enjoy myself.

Kind of want to watch the 2019 one tomorrow just to see how it compares.

watching the 2019 Escape Room

Production value of everything is WAY higher (the 2017 one seemed like it could be a legitimate escape room but this basically seems like an amusement park)

but the characters are largely pretty terrible so far. How is it that like only one person in the escape room knows how escape rooms work

so it was definitely not terrible. The designs of the rooms were all really cool, even if the puzzles themselves were a simplistic given the effort that seems to have gone into crafting the rooms themselves (literally every room is basically one single, simple puzzle). My biggest issue was the writing and characters though. In literally the very beginning of the first room everyone's already losing their minds like they didn't voluntarily come to an escape room, and most of the characters seem to actively work against solving the puzzles to the point that the main protagonist has to solve nearly every one solo.

Watched the original Carrie after realizing I had never seen it all the way through. Man what brilliant storytelling. If you knew nothing going in you might think it's a feel-good coming-of-age film about acceptance until the last 15 minutes, there's really not too much in the way of horror up till that point, aside from some stuff with the mom. The ending had more of an impact now that I actually saw how well it's sold that Carrie's life is finally going to improve, how she finally stands up to her mom and asserts herself. Genius tragic horror. And the last scene, holy smokes. I mean I had seen that part before but imagining it in a theater, people must've gone as nuts as they did at the Psycho twist.

Anyway that's my 40-years-late review, go catch Carrie in theaters, this Stephen King guy's the hot new name in horror.

I thought Ma was decent for what it was. Definitely not a lot of depth to it, but some fairly effective shock horror and weird humor. It reminded me of if Annie Wilkes was let loose on a bunch of teenagers.

Saw the Suspiria remake a little while ago - it does somewhat stand on its own, because of how different it is from the original, but at the same time it's not nearly as stylish or interesting. The original was great because it was bombastic and in-your-face right from the start, and got good mileage out of its 100-minute runtime. At almost an hour longer, the new one tried to be a bit of a slow burn, which does not fit the spirit of the original at all. It had some OK set pieces and side plots, and the dream sequences were cool, but really I just wanted to go back and watch Argento's version.

Looking ahead, Midsommar comes out in July, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark in August, and It 2 in September, so this is shaping up to be an extremely good year for horror.
