Mine was Charmander back in Generation 1. Why? Because my friend told me it evolves into Charizard and man he looked so cool! And he still does!

I honestly don't remember who I actually picked first, it was either Charmander or Squirtle. I ended up preferring Squirtle as I grew up though.

Charmander because I was into lizards and, to a much lesser extent, fire. Didn't even know about evolutions at the time.

Charmander, I think. I liked Squirtle > Charmander, but Charizard > Blastoise.

Ive always started with water on my first play of a Gen.

Also I should note that I have played more games of Red with Bulbasaur than Charmander and Squirtle combined despite Charmander being my first, because I prefer Venusaur to Vileploom (and any other grass type) more than I prefer Charizard to Arcanine or Rapidash.

And Lapras >>> Blastoise

I want to say Squirtle but it might have been Bulbasaur.
I do remember having a max lv Blastoise and was really pissed when the cartridge stopped working.

I don't remember why I picked Bulbasaur first, but I do know that Bulbasaur is still my preference among Kanto's starters to this day.

Charmander. Don't recall the exact reasoning of past-me but I'm guessing because Fire was my favorite of those three elements/I liked his design the most.
