Sears, one of America's oldest and legendary retailers for clothing has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection after it amounted to massaive debts with staggering losses.

It began as a mail order catalogue in the 1880's selling sewing machiens to houses and then opened retail locations in 1925 where it went to suburban malls..

But after the presence of Walmart and Amazon that created challenges, it faced heavy competition from online sellers and appliance sellers like Lowe's and Home Depot.

Sears and Kmart join a growing list of retailers who have filed for bankruptcy as there were some bright spots such as Payless Shoes who emerged from bankruptcy after reorganization but others have not such as recently Toys R Us and Bon-Ton stores.

This will have wide ripple effects on everything from landlords to tens of thousands of workers as the filing is ahead of the crucial shopping eason as rescue attempts from Eddie Lampert failed

It sounds its famous Craftsman brand to Stanley Black & Decker and spun off pieces of its SEars Hometown and Outlet division and Land's End

Eddie tried pushing for debt restructering offering to buy some key assets such as Kenmore but the deal fell through

Sears stock fell from 6 dollars to now below 1 dollar. In April 2007,, shares were 141 US dollars and once had 350,000 workers which is now 90,000.

It racked up 6 BILLION in debts and Sears Canada also closed last February as it too failed to handle it's debt.

Now only 900 stores remain and soon all of those stores will have rapid sales as closures begin

I used to work at Sears and anyone with computer access could look up the financial information of any store. I am surprised this didn't happen sooner. The sales were terrible.

Just Canada. There were some good sales to be had then, though there were numerous stories of people discovering that products had new price stickers placed over the old ones that were (e.g.) 25% higher, meaning that 20% discount didn't actually amount to anything. Somehow, they also still had enough money to give sizable bonuses to all of the executives that had run the company into the ground for doing such a good job of it.

Damn. I heard they're closing our second Kmart too. This area is turning into a pit with all these closures. Without K there's a whole lot going to a Payless and a thrift store. The mall will have a big hole without Sears. I can only hope something like D&B moves in somewhere. Then TrU is gone leaving another empty lot.

All the Sears near me already closed. Came shortly after all of the KMarts closed. I did get a decent set of Craftsman tools out of it though.

Sears is the last place I would go for an oil change. Went there for a new battery years ago, and the new battery literally died 3 months later because they hooked it up wrong.

Also meant to respond to this... yeah the time I went up to sears to trytand redeem my reward through shop your way, they seemed incredibly unprofessional. That's why I never bothered again. I just went to Walmart because half price at sears is barely less than regular price at Walmart and Walmart always does whatever I need without ever giving me any issues

All the sears around here closed over 7 years ago.

I might go tomorrow. I have a friend who needs a mattress as well, so he might get a good deal on one possibly.

Not anything specifically I want, and sears is usually way over priced so like a 30% off isn't really a sale, but if they have things going for 70% off or something, I might grab some stuff.

Might have games/game systems on sale etc, but....not likely.

Honestly, a lot of their stuff isn't even appealing so the discounts don't mean much. I did pick up a bunch of games on clearance there a few years back including a vanilla copy of Skyrim for $6, but I can't recall if they even sell games at any of ones near me any more.

At any rate, I checked the list yesterday and only like 2 stores in CT are shutting down so far.
