it doesn't taste like anything except what you use to season it or cook it in. for real. you eat anything with tofu, you taste that thing. it is blank filler (and it can be really tasty)

plus there's so many kinds of it

There are so many kinds of tofu that it doesn't have a texture. it has dozens. Then how you cook it impacts it further

it has a taste, a mild taste overpowered by basically anything

you can hate tofu if you want. but if you eat hot dogs, do you think they are gross on some level?

Hot dogs have only ever been really great in their context for me. Like camping and summer barbecue. Just having them at home without that fire and experience is meh.

But i could eat this braised tofu any day for sure

I agree that tofu is pretty tasteless all on its own, it tastes like whatever you cook it with so if it ends up gross the cook probably didnt know what to do with it. The important thing with tofu is to cook it in a way that gives it an appealing texture though imo

Id say this is a fair point to make. Even of tofu feels and tastes a little funky(though sometimes i like it) a hot dog is animal guts.

Hotdogs suck. Now sausage, chorizo, and linguia are great. Tofu is meh, but done in kitsune udon its acceptable.

The taste of the tofu depends on the kind of tofu it is and how it's cooked. There are some tofu that does have taste, but those are the really shitty ones. So maybe the tofu haters only have had the shitty tofu.

I've had okay tofu before but I don't really go out of my way to eat it. But I don't go out of my way to eat hot dogs either, I've thought they're gross for a long time

It only taste boring if not prepared correctly. As Doctor Foxx suggest, tofu for the most part takes on whatever flavour it is cooked with. Kinda baffles me actually when I see people eat plain cold tofu in a salad. Apart from the dressing the tofu will have next to no flavour. My personal favorite is Mabo tofu and as a dessert with ginger syrup.

Of course it being flavourless does mean having to take extra steps to add flavour compared to just boiling up/grilling some hot dogs. Personally I prefer bratwurst over hotdogs though.

Still, everyone's palate is bound to be different so no matter how good one dish is to one person, it is bound to be trash to another and I don't doubt visual appearance will put off some people. I'm curious about the Filipino dish, balut, but will admit the visual appearance is kinda off putting even if it's basically chick soup, so to speak.

Which ones are you referring to? I've had tofu of different softness/hardness but the only ones I recall having a taste by itself are the fermented tofu which too strong for me to eat.

I guess tofu is good if you need something to cook. Personally, it's kind of pointless for me. One of the times I've had it was at Szechaun, I believe. My friend ordered some and we shared some of the food. It was ok. I liked it. But if it takes on the flavor of whatever it's cooked with, I could have used the sauce with like chicken or something. The only two real reason to use it in that situation is if you wanted the same taste without the meat taste or if you were a vegetarian or vegan who wanted the same taste(though depending on the sauce, maybe not...).

Gross is relative though. Friend of mine cannot stand sliced tomatoes in his burgers/sandwiches. He said it isn't the taste but the texture that seems to gross him out.
