I cannot see them beating the Sox that easily. It will definitely go to Game 5 unless the Red Sox sweep them.

Well all that's left to be decided of the American League is where the Wild Card game will be. I don't know who will win it, but I expect the Red Sox to beat either one. I predict the ALCS will be Astros over the Red Sox in 7 games for the repeat World Series appearance.

No fucking clue with the National League though. My gut is to pick the Dodgers again, but I really hope it's the Brewers.

Rockies 0.5 back of STL for the WC and 1.5 back of LA for the division is really the only race left

Also DAVID WRIGHT ACTIVATED TODAY OMG

So as of today then, David Wright officially holds the active streak for consecutive games with a Home Run (3), as he did this 3 games in a row in 2016 before going on the DL.

Lot of emotions today between Wright activated from DL, and Jose Fernandez death anniversary

Here is also an article about the Mets announcers, Gary, Keith, and Ron; which I am surprised does not mention their handling of the Fernandez game/ceremony, as that is one of their most defining moments.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/25/magazine/mets-baseball-gary-keith-ron.html

And the video from the Fernandez moments:

And now its official - Wright activated from the DL after almost 3 years. Will PH once in this ATL series before starting at 3B on Saturday vs Miami. Truly surreal he gets to play, if only one more time. All that rehab and hard work paid off, in some way.

Since that article touched on the Yankees broadcast team, I do actually think they've improved. David Cone specifically. I don't know if anything actually changed with him, maybe I just wasn't paying attention. But he used to be very dull. This year he's been really good though. I think as long as you have him with Michael Kay or Ken Singleton, the Yankees broadcast is usually solid.

I think mostly its shots at the "headliners" of Kay and Sterling. I will say even though Sterling is bad, he has a great radio voice

deGrom's final start - 8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 10 K - 110 pitches.
Struck out his final 2 batters in the 8th to earn his 1000th career Strikeout.

Utter dominance.

Quite literally one of the best pitchers I've ever seen.

Should be the unanimous Cy Young.

In line for his 10th win barring the 9th inning (Conforto mashed a massive bomb for him in the 8th, Smith got one too. so 3-0 lead)

And editting this because the Mets just won so he finishes with a winning record after all, 10-9.

217 IP, 152 H, 41 ER, 46 BB, 269 K, 10 HR, 1.70 ERA, 10-9

i'll probably get more of the advanced metrics and shit tomorrow but this should be nice for now.

3 outs away from a nice ERA to go with his nice strikeouts

Perspective: Jacob DeGroms 29 straight starts allowing 3 runs or less was never done:

1) By Bob Gibson in the Year of the Pitcher.
2) During the Dead-Ball era of the early 20th century.
3) By any pitcher EVER going back over 100 years.

We have not looked like a playoff caliber team for the past month or so. It's an embarrassing way to finish out the year, and I doubt we make it past the NLDS, if that.

Momentum into the playoffs is totally way over-evaluated. I am pretty sure there has been research done (I'm taking the lazy way here and not actually looking) that having a bad final couple weeks relative to the rest of your season (or in general) (and still being in the playoffs) has little to no impact on postseason performance.

Runner-up to deGrom winning Cy Young should be "Opposing Starter in games deGrom starts."

Better ERA than Scherzer (2.45 vs. 2.53) and I wonder what their xFIP is.

Yeah, true.

Unfortunately Scherzer only started two games against the Mets this year (14 IP, 3.86 ERA) so that isn't a good further comparison. I'm still a little curious to see how they batted in general this year behind non-deGrom pitchers.

Scherzer also faced a slightly easier schedule than deGrom! Since the Nats have extra Orioles game (of which Scherzer pitched 1, I think) and the Mets have extra Yankees game (and deGrom pitched 1).

From The Athletic:

BA ///// OBP /// SLG /// OPS
0.240 / 0.316 / 0.395 / 0.711 - Non-deGrom starts
0.219 / 0.300 / 0.377 / 0.677 - deGrom starts
0.217 / 0.295 / 0.359 / 0.654 - deGrom while he's still pitcher of record

Although that doesn't break down how much of that offense for deGrom is actually from deGrom. Sometimes, he was the offense in his starts.

Also, Mets bullpen has a 6.85 ERA in his starts, 4.75 in other games.

Note that those statistics were from before last night's game. To further confirm them, the Mets scored 1 one for deGrom while he was pitching, with another 2 after he was finished (I guess technically, he was still in the game for those 2 runs, but his day was finished, he wasn't going back out for the 9th).

The man basically pitched the whole season with the score tied or within 1 run. He only pitched 19 innings all season in which the scoring margin was 3 runs or more. He took the mound trailing in only 26 innings (12%) all season. He took the mound in a tie game 47% of the time.

With the bases loaded, opposing hitters went 0-for-13 with 9 strikeouts, for the entire season.

Looking back on it, perhaps one of his most impressive starts of the season was his worst. He missed a start after a short stint on the DL, came back, and managed to only go one inning, throwing 45 pitches. He didn't give up any runs. He didn't give up any hits. Basically, the one day where he absolutely did not have it, the best the opposing team could do was foul off his pitches until he threw enough outside of the zone to draw a walk. He walked the bases loaded with no outs and got out of it with a strikeout, fielder's choice, and another strikeout.

Neat, thanks. The non-deGrom start stats put their offense as roughly middling quality compared with the other 29 teams. The factor that makes it even worse is, as you said, 47% of the time he pitched in a tied situation. So moments of high leverage constituted the majority of the Mets' offensive failings. He did have a number of starts involving the Mets getting quick, early leads and then continuing to produce well when the pressure was off.

But if the game was close, the offense sputtered.

On another note, I assume Scherzer starts one more game in the finale against the Rockies, in part to break Pedro Martinez's franchise strikeout record. Unless he goes a complete game with no runs and 9+ Ks I don't think he changes much in the Cy Young/MVP discussion, and pitching at Coors should prove interesting.

well hitting a game winning home run has nothing to do with winning an award for pitching but if he does that maybe he can win the MVP

but he needs 107.2 scoreless innings to match deGrom's ERA so. if he does that then sure, I will agree
