Are most of us waiting for S;G 0 to end? Ive just been assuming so since almost nobody talks about it despite it airing now

I don't think it requires high IQ to watch

you just need to pay attention to the dialogue

and you need to get rid of your OCD and be comfortable with missing a lot of stuff with the animation style

Nadeko Snake: This is probably the least popular Monogatari arc period. It's a bad adaptation of the book's version, and the book's version wasn't the greatest anyway. Even in her one Nise episode I liked Nadeko way more than here. The curse thing does come back a little bit, but it takes quite a while. I think the book focused on it more too. I wasn't even quite sure what happened when I watched it in the anime.

Your opinion is amusingly backwards on Tsubasa Cat. It's not a very popular arc, but everyone loves ep 12. The book has a cool part where he talks about all the different ways he loves everyone. I can't quite remember all of them, but he does talk about how Hanekawa is his best friend and Hachikuji is the most fun to hang around with (and obviously that he's in love with Senjou and he just loves being with her). I don't think that part was in the anime, which made me a bit sad.

Shinobu's change in Nise probably works a bit better with more time passing. Going from watching Bake to Nise was a three year gap. Seeing it happen so fast might've made it feel worse for you?

Tsukihi Phoenix: Was a contender for worst arc at the time IMO. There were great parts otherwise, but I didn't like the central plot that much. I do find Ononoki and Yozuru to be pretty entertaining though. The fight at the end is way better in the book. It's like 50 pages of Yozuru beating the shit out of Araragi (I'm exaggerating, but it goes on for a long time).

Also, Kaiki is pretty popular with Monogatari fans, but I don't like him that much either.

without reading the novels I get the feeling that Hanekawa is that perfect girl he doesn't want to defile, he basically he puts her on a pedestal and doesn't think he's worthy of her

I think you're just getting hung up on Kizu and wanting there to be obvious lasting consequences

Her name "Shinobu" aka Heart Under Blade (this describes the actual kanji for her name btw) is a pun on her being his responsibility. The kanji for Shinobu means "endure", aka he's taking her onto himself for the rest of his life. That's pretty lasting imo

Hiroshi Kamiya is in it playing a guy called Scott Ford who tvtropes lists as a Butt-Monkey. Apparently everybody in the black doggy group has dog-themed names and everyone in the cat group has cat ones.

The VA cast seems solid for such a dumb sounding show. Sugita, Ayane Sakur and Daisuke Ono among others

I just mean that if Meme had phrased it like 'hey do this and in a few months she'll be more or less normal, your trusted ally, and you'll be having fun together getting donuts' then the end of Kizu 3 would've fallen really flat. He worded it like it was a terrible fate that would leave them both dissatisfied because satisfying both was impossible... but by the end of Nise they both seem pretty satisfied.

For the record, I don't think the direction Shinobu took was bad. I like her quite a bit! I just don't think it gels perfectly with the seemingly dire situation Kizu 3 ended on.

That's fair, Roba. The dialogue and such definitely plays Shinobu and Araragi's relationship as much dire than it actually feels like it is. But loli Shinobu is entertaining enough that I don't really mind :p

This is actually one of the ones I hope to watch before hitting 200 anime (counting everything I've started, I'm at 187 right now)! That said, it probably won't be for a few months because I'll need at least that long to finish all the things I've already started.

At least youre watching HxH so you arent drowning in all the bad anime people keep recommending to you.

I finished Nekomonogatari Black and I actually have quite a bit to say about it given that this was only a four-episode season. Going into this, I was curious about what revelations the story would have to justify its existence since it dealt with events that were already mostly covered in Bakemonogatari. In the end, though, it didn't really reveal anything new or shocking... and yet I couldn't be happier with it. By seeing these events fleshed out into their own arc, I feel like I've gained a deeper understanding about Hanekawa and also of her place in the overall series. My impressive insights are probably all blindly obvious things, but I still want to write them out just to organize my own thoughts!

I mentioned after the Kizu movies that I couldn't understand how Araragi managed to fall for someone other than best girl Hanekawa. This arc dealt with that question right from the beginning, though, and I liked how a lot of the events and symbolism came together to answer it. Araragi holds Hanekawa to an unreasonably high standard, represented by the fact that he literally cannot safely touch her when she's in her cat form. I also think Hanekawa would only be using him to escape her home life if they were to get into a relationship. They touched on that in her arc in Bakemonogatari where she said something like, of course she fell for him because she thought a vampire would be able to save her. I also mentioned after the Kizu movies that she was extremely supportive of him through all the vampire weirdness... but they examined that in Nekomonogatari too. Hanekawa was just going through the motions of what she felt was expected of her, just like when she buried the cat. With anyone else, what she did in the Kizu movies would've been monumental and a sign of a whole bunch of things, but to Hanekawa that was just her being her. There really was nothing more to it.

These pieces were all there before Nekomonogatari, they just didn't quite click for me until I saw how she willingly embraced a cat spirit just to get away from her family and vent her stress. It didn't need to be Araragi who saved her, it could've been anything. And, because of that, it probably shouldn't be Araragi to ultimately save her through a romance because it wouldn't be fair to either of them. I saw that Hanekawa has another arc coming up at the start of Second Season, and I'm looking forward to seeing it. I appreciate her appearances in Nisemonogatari a lot more now, too, because it looked like she's already taking positive steps to escape her situation on her own. I'm still sad she lost the long hair and glasses in the makeover, though!

Anyway, how their relationship was explored through their interactions and neat symbolism was my favorite part of the season, but there were other things I thought it handled really well too. For example, Nekomonogatari handled the incest fanservice right! It was still present with Araragi grabbing Tsukihi's boobs after her joking offer, and Karen paraded around topless at one point. It wasn't treated as remotely sexual, though. This felt more like siblings who were comfortable enough to casually mess around with each other or be naked in their own home, as opposed to feeling like... whatever the hell the toothbrush episode was. I'm glad they appear to have left that Nisemonogatari tone behind.

There was also the moment where Hanekawa said she'd do anything to keep Araragi quiet about her abusive stepfather, and he made a big show of being a huge pervert... only to ultimately use the request to heal her injury. Even when he flipped her skirt, it was mostly to defuse an awkward situation and she realized that and reacted positively. I want more of this Araragi where his perversions are more obviously jokes and have actual justifications, as opposed to just groping Hachikuji every time he sees her for the hell of it.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to continuing with the next arc tomorrow!
