Yeah MLB should probably intervene and force the Wilpons to sell. It's absurd how awful they are. I want to see another Subway Series some day, but I think for the Mets that's going to require competent ownership first.

ousting an MLB owner is tough. They need to be doing actual permanent visible damage to the franchise and brand, typically involving profitability.

Unfortunately, Mets attendance is only down a small amount, it would take an actual concerted boycott effort to damage the brand and Mets fans simply havent hurt MLB in the pocketbook.

Yeah but it's difficult to ask fans to make that effort to boycott. Going to a baseball game is a fun event, and no one wants to deprive themselves of it. You're right though, I don't think ousting them is likely to happen.

A heartbreakingly close loss in 11 innings?

Must be a Giants game :/

And to the METS no less. Every time I feel like "yes, technically it wouldn't be THAT crazy to make a run at 1st if they can just have ONE great month" and it's a dumb loss where the pitching is great but the offense doesn't do shit.

lol welcome to like 95% of mets games. pitching great against the mets doesn't really mean anything because everyone does it. don't ever pick up a pitcher in fantasy just because he had a good start vs the Mets. he'll prob get shelled next time out. the mets games don't usually seem close because we've had like at least 7 games this year where it was 0-0 or 1-1 through 8 innings and wind up losing 7-1 or something

and yeah at this point I am pretty resigned to MLB not doing anything. There's so many points where they should've stepped in, it was so egregious and they haven't. I'm convinced there is literally nothing they could do that would force them to sell. Once you get to not only stealing money from the team for self-profit, but also literal insurance fraud and MLB doing nothing, then yeah. It's hopeless. And the main issue isn't Fred (the elder), it's Jeff (the younger). Fred will probably die within 5-10 years and then Jeff will be full owner (with Katz) and that honestly will probably make things worse.

more on the insurance fraud thing: They ended Wright's rehab at 19 games, with 3 days left in the AAA season. The max rehab stint is 20 games at which point you HAVE to be activated or DFA'd (since you can't option him). they stopped his rehab at 19 because they don't want to activate him because they'd have to pay him $2M out of pocket. Yet Wright is literally saying he's ready/healthy and they're forcing him to stay on the DL, in order to force insurance to pay him. And of course remember this isn't some random schmo minor leaguer. This is literally a franchise icon they are actively fucking over, over $2M.

National League pitcher fWAR ranks:

1. Jacob deGrom - 7.4
2. Max Scherzer - 6.0
3. Patrick Corbin - 5.7
4. Aaron Nola - 5.5
t5. Noah Syndergaard - 3.8
t5. Zack Wheeler - 3.8

The Mets have 3 of the best 6 pitchers in the NL, and they are the 4th worst team in the league. Fuck the Wilpons.

Yeah I agree, and I don't think Scherzer's lead in other stats is that significant to give it to him over deGrom.

deGrom is having a better year than Kershaw when he won MVP in 2014.
I have heard deGrom mentioned for MVP also, in that regard. Of course, MVP tends to go to players on winning whereas Cy Young doesn't matter for that.
MVP is stupidly/ambiguously defined anyway. If you mean the V in MVP then say so. You have half the people voting for the best player in the league and half sticking to the definition of "valuable". And then you can break down that 2nd half more by defining value as "leading team to the playoffs" vs "Imagine how much worse this team would be without this guy".

Edit: Well, maybe not strictly better. But they're very comparable. And there is no clearcut offensive leader.

deGrom 2018 - 1.68 ERA, 28 G, 188 IP, 219 ERA+, 2.07 FIP, 2.70 xFIP, 6.7 H/9, 0.4 HR/9, 2.0 BB/9, 11 K/9, 8.2 bWAR, 7.4 fWAR

Kershaw 2014 - 1.77 ERA, 27 G, 198.1 IP, 197 ERA+, 1.81 FIP, 2.08 xFIP, 6.3 H/9, 0.4 HR/9, 1.4 BB/9, 10.8 K/9, 7.7 bWAR, 7.6 fWAR

Scherzer 2018 - 2.28 ERA, 29 G, 193.2 IP, 186 ERA+, 2.73 FIP, 3.06 xFIP, 5.8 H/9, 1.0 HR/9, 2.1 BB/9, 12.1 K/9, 8.2 bWAR, 6.0 fWAR

Strikeouts are the only thing Scherzer really has over deGrom. And it's not a large difference.

deGrom, Scherzer and Nola all deserve MVP more than any position player for sure. but then it's possible none of them make the playoffs, so they might give it to a position player anyway.

or the weirdest thing that could probably happen, the Phillies take the division. then what? do you give CY to deGrom and MVP to Nola? hopefully the Phillies just don't make the playoffs and then maybe there's a chance deGrom can take down both.

I've never liked the idea of giving the MVP to a pitcher. Cy Young is for them. Ideally it should go to a player on a playoff bound team too, but that can't necessarily always be the case. If a player on a poor team is the best position player in the League, they should be the MVP.

I could maybe understand giving it to Nola, but deGrom or Scherzer should not be considered in my opinion.

Silver Slugger/ Golden Glove is for the hitter. MVP is for everyone.

I do agree with leaning towards playoff teams, or at least winning teams. I would probably vote for a 6 WAR player on a playoff team that had a big part in getting his team a division title over a 7 WAR guy who quietly did well on a bad team.. not that player's fault, that's just my own weird feeling. It's not "Most Best Player", I guess..

I'm just not really a fan of giving it to pitchers. I think if it is given to a pitcher, they should definitely be on a playoff bound team, and they should be a major reason they reached the postseason. That's why I said I could maybe understand Nola getting it if the Phillies make the playoffs. Perhaps it's not fair to hold pitchers to a different standard than position players for the same award. But that's my preference when it comes to the MVP.

is there really a position player in the NL right now that is clearcut no-brainer for MVP. Last time I checked it was muddled with a bunch of players who are having really good seasons, yes, but nothing that would completely blow somebody away.

I saw that. Hilarious. When you anticipate a throw over, why waste energy sliding to get back. Take a few throws, then start your lead off.

Also, another down to the wire game. No one is saying that this is to the level of Cubs/Cards, because it isn't, but Brewers/Cubs is definitely a rivalry, with all due respect to the recently acquired/arguably least qualified to comment Cole Hammels.

I agree though that in the same way Packers/Bears is a rivalry, even though there haven't been a whole lot of times lately where both teams have been competitive (well, the packers are always competitive, bears not so much :D), Brewers/Cubs is also a rivalry, if by proximity alone over anything else.

I've seen Red Sox and Yankees fans travel well, taking over low-populated stadiums in Baltimore, Tampa, Atlanta, etc. But I've never seen them do anything like what Cubs did in 2010 and took over Fenway, during that sellout streak. Fenway was Wrigley East for a weekend. That was stunning, and those fans were almost all very good (though they seemed like they would rather lose forever than get new ownership).

I'm sure there are bandwagon Cubs fans like any championship team.
