I've seen Red Sox and Yankees fans travel well, taking over low-populated stadiums in Baltimore, Tampa, Atlanta, etc. But I've never seen them do anything like what Cubs did in 2010 and took over Fenway, during that sellout streak. Fenway was Wrigley East for a weekend. That was stunning, and those fans were almost all very good (though they seemed like they would rather lose forever than get new ownership).

I'm sure there are bandwagon Cubs fans like any championship team.

BTW you should see what happens at Fenway on 9/15

Huge series coming up between Brewers and Cubs.

If Brewers sweep, they will take the division lead by 1 game.
If Cubs sweep, they will breathe easy again with a 5 game lead that should more or less cement the division for them.

If either goes 2-1, it'll result in a 1-3 game lead for the Cubs, which would make the division still too close to call.

The Cubs aren't losing this division. Even with like 30 straight days of scheduled games, the stress of rain delays, and the MLB office being kind of stupid about the Thursday game we're just plain better than the Brewers overall. I have 0 fear of the Brewers.

I wont make any more of it than what it was. But with now only 1 game separating the Brewers from the Cubs, and the Cards not too far behind, if you don't think this division is still up for grabs, then I don't know what is.

Look, I get it. The Brewers have had a history of late season swoons, and it's tempting to just overlook them again. But this team is playing its best baseball of the season. They've just won their seventh straight series, which includes two series against the Cubs. And with the second best record in the NL and only 1 game behind you, I am at a loss at how you can still smugly dismiss them and count other teams, specifically ones outside of the division, as more of a threat.

Ok Zack Wheeler is officially for real.
mets will go into 2019 with 3 of the best pitchers in baseball, a solid 4 in Steven Matz and whatever the blue hell Vargas is at #5 (though i like Corey Oswalt as a depth option), though the 5th should be Seth Lugo.

there's still another 2ish years before theyre gonna lose all the amazing pitching but thats what theyre gonna do cuz they refuse to spend on offense. such a waste. too bad they fucked up Cespedes too by forcing him to rehab and play through instead of getting surgery when they knew about it. but no. go through 2 months of rehab to play 1 game vs the yankees then go through a 10 month rehab process. too bad he didnt have that in may/june instead of AUGUST.

christ.

Amed Rosario (and Jeff McNeil AND Dom Smith... all guys who should be starting basically every single game the rest of the season) are ALL sitting today, for the first game of a doubleheader. What, they can't fucking handle 2 games in one day? THEY ARE YOUR FUTURE.

Oh hey and, this is from 6 days ago:
https://twitter.com/SteveGelbs/status/1038156072664670209
Callaway says that the reason Rosario is off today is because the team wants him to play every game the rest of the way. They wanted to take advantage of the off day yesterday to give him two days off in a row.

Every fucking day, they lie. This not normal behavior. Why the fuck do the Wilpons always have to fuck everything up so badly. Stop fucking lying. Stop fucking meddling. This is so fucking infuriating. No other team in sports has ownership that literally- LITERALLY - lies to its fans and ruins its future by doing stupid shit like playing Jose Reyes 2 days in a row over meaningful prospects on an almost daily basis.

David Wright holds a press conference.

In complete tears the whole time.

He will be activated from the DL, first time in almost 3 years, on Tues 9/25 but probably not play until being scheduled to start at 3B on Saturday 9/29, the 2nd to last game of the year. He says he playing after this year is "pretty much impossible". The end of an era.

What a shame a truly hallmark player had to have his career end this way- he was a surefire hall of famer 3 years ago, but won't have the time logged now. He is truly an unbelievable class act every step of the way. A real leader and I'm not just saying that to be cliched. The way he carried himself, not just during the injury but before and currently... he's just truly a remarkable person. He loves baseball so much. He cares about his team so much. He suffered all through the bad years , as the only good player, because he believed in sticking it through with the team - a truly loyal person. He deserved far better than being cursed with his injury.

It's truly unbelievable that after all David Wright has been through that he's able to step foot on a MLB field again after almost 3 years. A true testament to his resilience, determination, and love for baseball. He had spinal stenosis. This is a career-ending injury. And while it wound up being the case here - HE FOUGHT. FOR THREE YEARS. To get back on the field to make his dreams of playing baseball just one more time, a reality.

My favorite player of all time and I am going to miss him so much. Thank you for a lifetime, David. I will never forget being at his first game back trying to return from the spinal stenosis in Philadelphia, when he hit a home run his first AB back - he always had a flair for the dramatic (notably, 3 times he hit a HR in his first AB back off the DL). He will go down as the best Mets position player of all time - holding leads in every offensive category but HRs basically (Strawberry), 2nd overall only to Tom Seaver.

Always remember David as one of the most fiercely loyal and caring people you'll know - a fantastic athlete through and through - a true definition of a class act - to fans, to teammates, to young kids working their way up the system, and even to those in the front office who may have not deserved his kindness and compassion. That is David Wright.

The Mets will undoubtedly Retire 5, but this man (and Seaver) deserves a statue in front of Citi Field, mid-swing, tongue out .

I should note. He never officially said he's calling it quits. He said along the lines of "its basically impossible" that he'll play next year. Because he still doesn't want to admit its the end, even though he knows deep down it's going to be.

He lived out his dream. It was tragically cut short. But he fought back to make it back, if even for just one day. This man is everything we should all aspire to be.

he was one of the all time greats. but he won't really be recognized as such because it was cut short.

I am honored that I was able to grow up watching "the David Wright era". It is a shame that it had to end this way - what would've easily been a HOF career. I hope to see him stay involved with the team in some capacity in the future. As a franchise legend, it should be.

I just wish they had won for him in 2015 and got him the ring he deserved. To me, that's the most disappointing thing about falling just short that year.

Imagine someone who is born with a drive inside them to be the best at whatever they set their mind to be and not let anything get in the way of that dream. Then imagine them coming up against an obstacle that nobody can overcome, but still fighting against it anyway, trying to defy reality, because that is all they know how to do. That news conference was the culmination of a guy who never quits coming to the sober realization that some obstacles are simply too large to overcome.

It's not the first hall of fame career to be cut short by injury. It won't be the last. But it's pretty special that he'll get the opportunity to play one more time for his team.

I only really care about AL East/Red Sox and then whatever big issues come up. Baseball can be tough because there's soooo much of it. I wouldn't know what to say about the Brewers aside from "you're lucky you don't have Thornberg". I wouldn't even know what to say about the Cubs this season, or the Nationals, or the Rangers or Mariners etc.

They should get rid of the wild card play in game, BUT they should give the wild card's opponent the right to tell the team who they can't use as a game 1 starter. there that's my terrible contribution for the day

I care about baseball plenty I've been holding back plenty of new wilpon shit every day I can go back to that if you like "lol"

i like the wild card game. I like the focus on "win your division". Really the wild card shouldn't be a thing at all - its like a last chance resort thing. the old way they did it gave waaaaaaay too much equal power to a team that didn't win its division. This way its basically like the WC doesn't exist but one team gets a last stab. I like that. Besides the importance on winning division, also makes rivalries more meaningful

Well Wigs, I know it's in your nature to be eternally pessimistic as a Mets fan, but you have to admit things look a little brighter for them. Going into next year they're going to have a rotation of deGrom, Syndergaard, and Wheeler. Plus I still think Matz is better than what he's done this year. And all the young position players seem like a good base to build off of. I still think they need to make some kinda big signing for someone like Machado, but that's unlikely.

I absolutely want them to do well in the upcoming few years because I want another Yankees vs. Mets World Series.

See

this is exactly the kind of thinking that gets us into the trouble we are. We were 5-21 in June, when basically fully healthy. FIVE and TWENTY ONE. this happens every single year. they play a little better baseball at the end of the season and then the front office goes HEY no need to do anything different, lets ride the same team as last year that won 75 games and hope nobody gets injured.

EVERY YEAR.

LITERALLY. EVERY. YEAR. THE. SAME. THING.

No. They need to make a huge splash in the offseason or next year will be 75 wins again or worse. And they're obviously not going to do that. But they said they're "committted to trying to win next year" which they ALSO say every year and back it up by signing guys from the bargain bin, except not at a bargain (hello Jay bruce 3 years 39 million). its the same goddamn lies every year. "we are committed to winning (but we cant afford to sign anyone good)"

They need act as if the team we saw in June is the real Mets, which it is. Forgetting the fact they were NOT that injured for most of their earlier awful stretch, they never sign enough depth anyway. The amount of fixing this team needs is insanely excessive and can only be fixed by a budget of a team that has no budget. Anyone who is optimistic about the Mets next year has only watched the Mets for the last 2 weeks.
