I have this one pretty close friend and I enjoy talking to him and stuff

but over messenger he's the type of person that will send 20 consecutive messages for every 1 that I send and it kind of makes me not want to talk

I have one who does this. I told him it was annoying. He said he understood and would tone it down. Worked for about a week and then went back to the exact same shit.

Stop talking to him on chat and when he asks IRL why you haven't responded to him show him his unreadable wall o texts

It only bothers me when Im playing a rhythm game on my phone, because everything goes to hell the moment someone sends me a message.

Just be honest with what bugs you and say they're a pain to read in that format or whatever it is. Ask em to condense his thoughts into less texts at once.

I said this straight up to a friend of mine because my old phone had to open texts one at a time and he was not offended and respected my request. It's really not something to be offended by as long as you dress it as your problem and not his.

thing is he's pretty self conscious and I feel like he'd get his feelings hurt pretty easily

he doesn't have a whole lot of friends and I don't want to discourage him from talking overall

Make sure you help them understand the issue is 20 messages that could be 3-4. If you dont want to discourage talking just make sure youre clear that you do want to communicate, but not respond to 20 messages

also checking in as one of those annoying people who sends a bunch of messages in a row as I basically just release my thoughts while they come to me. combined with a fast typing speed this can lead to disastrous walls of texts. funny enough I can't remember any time when someone actually told me that it bothered them, but I've definitely been able to read at times when it bothered the other person.

ironically the opposite usually happens here, I'm the one who just stops talking to them eventually because... I dunno. it just annoys me when people can't be direct or honest with me. plus if they're always disengaging from the conversation or seem unenthusiastic about what I want to talk about there's basically no reason for me to bother talking to them anyway.

I used to try to save an extra 10 bucks on my phone bill by having limited texting

I remember a friend and my brother would text 5 or more times for my 1

so I told them they are literally costing me money by not condensing their shit and they stopped

though this probably doesn't apply here

i naturally do this too. if you interact with me in discord you know how I usually do it, or back in AIM chat.
just the way my mind works. if someone told me to stop, I'd make an effort but I'd gravitate towards going back to doing it for sure just cuz its what I'm so used to. I guess the reason I do it is because my brain is going faster than my hands. so ill say something and my brain will think ok end of thought, next. ok no wait a minute.

he tends to rapidly change subjects before I even have time to reply to the last thing he talked about

i tend to be the person who sends way more texts. it can be frustrating when you want to say multiple things, but the response time after the first thing you say is too long. if you responded faster then the exchange rate would be more even, but your pace might just be slower.
