Legend of the Galactic Heroes episode 16

Well, not totally sure how I feel about the sudden introduction of a religious cult as a major force in what has otherwise (ironically) been a pretty down-to-earth show. In any case though the show has been pretty good so far, at least. I don't really have a lot to say other than that Reinhard is slowly moving down what I'm assuming is an inevitable path towards being an irredeemable piece of human scum. Also on a more general note I like how...historically aware the show is, I guess? Like it's extremely political but in ways that actually make sense, as opposed to--well--other anime.

Also I was wrong before. Yang Wen-li is the real best character in the show. I ship him and Frederica Greenhill super hard because of course this is the type of show where I should be doing that kind of thing.

I just finished the first season of Nyarko-san: Another Crawling Chaos. I'm a big fan of Lovecraft so once I finally learned there was an anime inspired by it, it got pushed all the way to the top of my list. Given that eldritch inspiration, a harem comedy certainly wasn't what I was expecting. Still, I really enjoyed it! I'm sure this is something that a lot of people would hate because of its semi-annoying comedic style and Nyarko being so crazy, but to me it was tons of fun. I love high-energy characters like Nyarko, and I actually really like what it did with the harem dynamic. Kuuko obsessing over Nyarko rather than the (purposefully) bland protagonist led to a lot of hilarious moments. I feel like they could've done more with the Lovecraft aspects, which were mostly limited to references (Carcosa Computer Entertainment was great, though) but I still enjoyed catching those as well. Hopefully the second season keeps up this quality.

I often have a problem with abusive violence (how many arguments have I had with Leonhart about Agate smacking a little girl in Trails in the Sky) but I don't mind comedic violence like this, especially when that fork is the only thing keeping him from getting sexed to death by an eldritch horror! Lots of anime have comedic slaps that send someone across the room, for example. As long as it isn't portrayed as abusive I can appreciate it for the joke that it is.

Taking it seriously is also fine if you really mean taking it seriously, but as the emphasis kind of implies that's pretty easy to do poorly I think.

I think abuse might be the wrong word for it when it's played as a joke. A character getting a karate chop to the back of the head and making a funny yelp and having an oversized bandage there after is just slapstick. Even though that would obviously be assault in real life, that sort of thing doesn't bother me at all (unless it's done really wrong I guess but I can't think of any examples off the top of my head).

Like pyre said, actual serious abuse can be okay too if it's taken seriously and the ramifications are honestly explored. Sadly, this sort of thing is mostly used to add meaningless edginess in my experience. The first episode of Magical Girl Site is an excellent example of that.

After slowly watching through it for awhile, I finally finished the second season of Kiniro Mosaic. I thought it was great! The five main girls played off of each other well, and it was impressive how even the long-running gags were always delivered in ways that were fresh enough to earn a grin.

Mac, youre like in the 0.0001% of people who would say a running gag like the fork, which is even self referenced within the show is whats primarily wrong with mahiro. Is it abusive? Thats really stretching it. Violent physical humor has been part of animation of decades and has become a trope of the tsundere for a long time now. Would it fly in real life? No, but this is not real life or even portrayed as real life.

Like in beauty and the beast Gaston is 100% abusing to LeFou physically in the animation and its played off for as comedy. Most people know its abuse because Gaston is a bad guy and in a position of power over LeFou, but everyone also realizes its comedy in those instances. In the live action version they specially reference these parts as things that they had to work around to adapt in real life because physical slapstick in live action does not work now and has not really been used in a while.

When we get to mahiro he is clearly not in a position of power. Its a running gag that he just kind of gets taken along for the ride. His entire character type is basically tsundere (although in later episodes hes a bit too mean because they need to do something to have dramatic plot points in the end). They even put in stuff in the show (or make jokes about it) on why mahiro uses the fork and why, despite obviously being pretty worthless in almost every situation, can manage to stab every super powerful being with it without fail.

There are actual character reasons to not like mahiro, but a lot of that is because hes the only character that can be successfully changed to move relationship points so they need to have his mood really establish the state of things.

Him being a villain is a big part of why it works though. Like, we're not supposed to think he's a good guy just because it's funny.

I know I sound like a broken record, but Wotakoi continues to be so frustrating. The content is there, the production isn't. And it's not an issue of the budget being too small, this show doesn't need one. The directing/timing is just so subpar. If the first and third episode hadn't been so good this wouldn't be bothering me so much. If it had retained the same quality it could have been one of my big personal favs.

Also, all of the VAs are middling to mediocre except for Arisa Date, which is a other negative tickbox, and it's nuts that she's the one who got the otaku hate.
