In Automata, 9S does a lot of sidequests for Devola and Popola, including that Desert Rose one I heard I needed to save those things for (although I only ever found 1 of the 5 I needed, so whatever). Then we head to the Tower, only to find we're blocked access by a very polite voice that redirects us to the Resupply Sources or whatever. That was a pretty cool segment as 9S is clearly starting his descent into madness and hatred, seeming to prove what Adam said about him.

After that, I switched back to A2, where Anemone gives us access to their shared backstory, which was pretty cool. Also, I run into Pascal, and the game gives me the choice to spare him or kill him. I chose to spare him since I like him, but now I wonder if the game would even let you kill him if you choose that option since you end up doing a bunch of stuff for him in his village soon afterwards. If you can, it'd make things kinda awkward. I didn't realize doing the "main" fetch quest would prevent you from being able to do all the others, but I did that one first since it was the easiest one, so 'whoops.'

Either way, Pascal's Village gets wiped out, which I figured was coming at some point for a couple of reasons. First, I kept seeing dead android bodies of other players in the village, which wouldn't make sense if you didn't have to fight here at some point. Second, I actually came here as 9S in the previous segment, and the village was empty. Since 9S was unconscious for two weeks, I figured that his part takes place at a later date than A2's, at least for now. Also, you can see A2's hardened personality softening really quickly over the course of this brief section at the village. I guess 2B was right that they're basically the same in that their tough exterior is really a facade. Pascal took the survivors to the abandoned factory, but I'll save that for tomorrow.

The thing I really liked about this one is that they simplified a lot of stuff (I guess because it was a remake of the second game in the series). All of this marriage and stuff in the other newer games (and I guess some of the old ones that were never released over here) would definitely give me some major decision paralysis.

P5: Navigation Trophy (and thus Platinum) get. That was somehow both more and less frustrating than I anticipated. I was pretty shocked I actually managed to get it in the 6th Palace despite only just now realizing I needed to work on it but oh my god trying to farm status ailment lines is the worst. Went a bit faster once I stopped being dumb and realized I could grab a Persona with Stagnant Air. It's probably a good thing it popped when it did because I was right about to exhaust what was possible for me to accomplish in the 6th Palace and also my patience was beginning to fray a bit. Comically it somehow triggered when Haru downed an enemy because I was trying to clear out the enemy types that had no part to play in my status ailment farming. I also have no idea how I didn't have that line before but whatever. Not complaining.

Well, I mean, the invisible progress is why I had to resort to that. If I'd known where I was line wise, I could have probably skipped most of that because there's a bunch of guaranteed lines from the story battles from here on and I could work on things more organically the rest of the game.

But I didn't try to grind my way out of it on my first playthrough or anything and I still somehow missed it. And IIRC, I recall at the very end when I realized I didn't have it I did some desperation grinding in case I was just short of it and it still didn't happen.

So all I was left to conclude was that it required more effort than anticipated so I responded accordingly this time around.

I'm not trying to be critical here. I'm just explaining the difference in our mentalities.

You hate it because you can't track your progress and know how many you have left. I'd hate the experience of grinding for the lines to get it in the first place. The trophy is not worth the extra effort for me. It just doesn't seem like any fun at all to do.

I'm totally fine never getting that trophy if it means I have to go out of my way and put in a lot of unfun effort to get it

Nier Automata: You got Ending E? the best. Also, yeah, The Tower is so hype. You got Devola/Popola at the start and then the Nier Library replica. 2A v 9S is incredible too. There's a pretty incredible Easter Egg when you play as 9S in that fight.

Also, coincidentally since we were talking about sidequests and effort. I think you'd be interested in the sidequest chain that leads to the bonus boss, but unfortunately the last step requires upgrading all weapons to Level 4. You can still do the parts leading up to that but they're not as interesting. Though I *think* it still involves an entire area you have yet to discover.

At any point where the giant crater exists in the City Ruins, you want to look at the various pipes sticking out. One of the ones near the "top" of the crater (IIRC it's on the way from the Resistance Camp to Pascal's Village but I'm doing this from memory) if you enter it, you'll find an elevator in there that leads you down into it. If you're using Chapter Select to get to a point to do this, talk to Emil first, talking to him is a flag involved with a door in there.

I think not liking 9S too much is part of why Automata didn't end up being one of my favorite games. I always wished Route C was all A2 with no 9S parts.

Pascal was my favorite side character. Everything about her was pretty great.

I might go back and do some minor mop-up things, but I probably won't do anything extensive. I've been looking up stuff on Automata that I've missed, so I might check those things out.

Also, thinking about it, I think I like the original Nier more, but Automata is still pretty good.

Hmm... things I'd consider looking up for Nier Automata:

Bonus Boss (The one involved with Ending Y since I guess there are arguably 2 Bonus Bosses. Ending Y itself is not necessary though.)

The hacking minigames if you hack A2 as 9S in the final battle. Stay for the whole thing.

Some of the joke endings are funny but I wouldn't call it a priority

There's actually a lot of optional stuff you can do with 9S in the Route C portion. Like finding where 2B crashed in the Flooded City when they split-up/she got corrupted and examining the wreckage. Visiting the Lunar Flower Garden where Kaine / Salvation plays (this is actually part of the Gathering Keepsakes quest you get at Resistance Camp), etc.

Yeah, I forgot that was tied to a sidequest and not something you just find on your own. Looking up 9S examining 2B's wrecked flight unit is worth it though. And the Bonus Boss can be fought with anyone so you can find a version with whoever you prefer for their responses. Personally A2 doesn't make that much sense to me for that fight but yeah.
