Well Relics were in MH4U, but you only get them from doing guild quests. They were essentially completely randomized drops, which made some people have absurd weapons/armors that have that perfect combination of skills and slots that you wouldn't have been able to get otherwise.

I really liked it. It allowed for really insane builds. But it took a long long time to get the relics you wanted obviously

So I'm going through village High Rank and I gotta say, it's getting to be a real drag. I'd like to forge some new armor but nothing seems worth it yet. Rocket dragon looks like it'll be interesting, if I can manage to get there.

Also read some Go Nagai stuff today cause of CHU, though it was mostly Devilman and Mazinger. Amon had some alright moments and the Getter Robo crossover was cool, but the real highlight of the day has been Mazinger Angels. As I've always figured, manga is better without the main character.

@SDBZ I'm looking forward to watching too. IIRC it repped in SRW K, which was my first entry in that most excellent game series. So even though I'm still waiting to get the discs, Fafner's starting out in a favorable position.

Yeah, it's the kind of stuff like grave of the fireflies where you watch it once and never watch it again. Luckily it was only 45 minutes. You can take comfort that the things they did weren't for naught though because there's a plot point here that becomes big in exodus and they reference this a lot as an operation that should never be done again. Also, one of the new characters in exodus is related to someone who died here.

That's Karin from the first season. She died in the first episode. RIP.

Also it's pretty funny that the only time in the story we get to see Soushi in the first season pilot suit is in Right of Left. Even though he's been shown wearing it in the first season ED lol.

I always thought that was a Kirby manga.

Also, that's kind of a hefty price for mangas. I read an article about how very very few people are actually buying manga and everybody's viewing it online, thus the entire industry is losing billions of dollars of potential profit. Except there's basically like no big official and convenient way to view mangas even after all these years. Oh Japan, ever so resistant to modern practices. They can put all sorts of creative people and manpower into all sorts of things and sell very much of nothing.

Seeing documentaries of say, old Nintendo, they were fucking ferocious. They lawyered the hell out of their competitors and pretty much legally wrestled just about anything that could wrestle them away from the competition (but in a classic Japanese fashion let Sony slip by and kill their monopoly). They weren't successful just because of good video games. Modern Nintendo hopes to rely on people simply buying their shit because they like their games and they're something of a special case due to their legacy and having people so talented that they've managed to stay barely future proof.

But the point here is, you can't just create a bunch of media and hope to succeed as long as they're good. You gotta be a businessman first, like Reki Kawahara who probably would sell his organs if given the chance and soul if he still has it, and establish a good system. Can't just complain later that piracy happens all the time and then sell physical books at that price online and hoping somebody would take a dive, even in the case the manga fucking sucks and whoever bought it regrets his spendings. That's a lost customer in the entire sphere of the industry. Otherwise you have people like us who would buy physical books already knowing that it's good.

Crunchyroll is the only one I ever hear of and 1) the selection is awful and 2) the web viewer is unusable. I really would like an actually good official online service for manga.

Yeah as far as I know, there's no effort to make this happen either, even though the manga reading community here is pretty freaking massive. Also, it's almost a bit too late for it I guess? Since 3rd party fan translation sites have such an absurd selection at this point that no amount of legal hoop jumping will make a comprehensive manga viewing site with some subscription system and a commission to the artisans worth it. Nobody's gonna be like oh, I'll go to this site with limited selection and barriers to entry over this unofficial site that asks nothing of me and has literally everything ever released on this side of the globe.

The problem is that businesses and industries take time to develop, and Japan did literally nothing about it. Now they're losing money and complaining with a bunch of people shrugging and saying "what do you exactly want us to do about it?"

manga can survive fairly well I think, thanks to like, those weekly manga magazines that are essentially a ton of series in one. Helps with advertising (?? getting people to see your stuff because it's near other stuff they're reading) and lets them sorta keep costs down. I'd be a lot more worried about western comic industry, which basically just sells individual volumes at prices way higher than anyone would pay except collectors. Or you can just wait and buy the batch versions.

You can kinda see it in the content too, I'm not going to say manga is some wonderful land full of originality and it does have its own issues but at least it's not cannibalizing itself in the same way comics are. pretty sure the only reason those can survive at all is the movies <_<

I've seen a surprising number of LNs offered as digital copies for ereaders or whatever, does manga not also do this? or maybe it does and I just don't realize

I'm pretty sure I've seen digital ebook copies of manga on Amazon US. No idea if that's offered in Canada.

I just remembered Comixology too. I forgot that because I always associated them with western comics.

I'm pretty sure most licensed mangas are offered digitally. They usually go for $6-8 a volume from what I've seen.
The Demon's Destruction series I just posted are $9 (but $8 on Barnes & Noble). I'm buying physical for the sake of collection though.

Most licensed LNs are also available digitally, and Yen Press has been releasing them for series that don't already have them.
