Pokemon movies getting low reviews from movie critics makes sense. 14% is a bit low for the original movie, but 14% for the most recent Ho-Oh film would be right.

It literally has everything to do with the video game except that they're mutated animals instead of mutated people. Everything else is pretty much almost the exact same, down to an evil corporation behind it and monsters literally climbing buildings.

EDIT: Hell, it's probably one of the most faithful video game movies there is. It's just from a different perspective.

It's worth noting that Pokemon the First Movie came out at the height of Pokemania, when Pokemon had taken over the world, there were new reports of Pokemon causing satanism or kids stabbing each other over Charizard cards on a weekly basis, and adults were utterly clueless as to how or why any of this happened, so I can imagine many critics had an axe to grind and gave it terrible reviews on principle. I wonder if the movie would be given better reviews if it were released today now that Pokemon is merely very popular and not an all-encompassing media phenomenon.

For what it's worth, the only films to score above 20% on Rotten Tomatoes are Pokemon 3, which has 22% from 55 reviews, and Pokemon I Choose You which has 43% from 7 reviews. I'm hesitant to say that I Choose You backs up the less exposure = better reviews theory because the sample size is too small, but I guess it is possible. Movies 6-19 don't have a critic score, only an audience score.

Critics pan great movies all the time and praise trash, so...

Probably because they were direct to video releases in the States (with one exception, like a Zekrom one or something, but I think that was like a one weekend deal). They were all released theatrically in Japan.

Pokmon The First Movie is dreadful. I loved it as a kid, but watching it again as an adult made me realise that it is awful.

I am glad that with this and the new Tomb Raider, we are entering into an age of mediocre video game films instead of terrible ones.

I was like, 11? when I saw the first Pokemon movie, and even back then I knew it was hilariously bad. I still loved it and enjoyed it because I loved Pokemon and seeing it in movie theaters was super exciting, but I knew the movie wasn't good.

Huh, Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie doesn't have a RT score. Seems like an oversight.
