I said a couple weeks ago that I would give Beatless until episode 12, its halfway point, to decide whether I would put it on hold (and finish it later on) or continue watching as it airs. That episode aired today, and I think it provided enough action, humor, cuteness, story progress, and hope for the second half of the show for me to stick with it.

Also, Kouka is still best girl.

Holy shit that's great. He used Separation as a sample. But also some dialogue from Fafner too. I heard a line from Maya in the beginning. This sounds great.

And yeah angela is fucking great. They do every single Fafner song. Do you like the openings by them too? You must've heard season 1's opening and Exodus' opening now. As well as their endings. All their songs are fucking great dude. Look into them. angela is one of my most favourite bands ever.

I kinda had that issue at first too. Particularly I got confused between Seri and Rina a lot in season 1 because they looked similar. But in Exodus they have more distinguished designs and different hair. I got used to it all as I kept watching. Don't worry and keep watching. The show will make you think a lot by the way. Especially from the second half of the first season onwards. Also you might cry a lot. The whole Fafner series made me cry so much like a baby. Not kidding. I love this series so much. It's one of my most favourite series ever. And it always will be.

I got to a small spoiler on exodus, where miwa was forced to grow, the weird worm festum went to the hotel, and rammed the shit out of it killing miwa's mother, i was like "oh fuck no..." but then she was alive again that's where i stopped the ep and started the actual 1st series though so who knows...

but yeah i can see why its also tagged as drama.

First two episodes of Gun Gale were really good

But here's the thing: All those things that people hate about Sword Art Online? They're not here. There's no infallible gary stu protagonist. There's no ridiculous relationship drama. There's no pointless incest subplot. There's no new girl being added to Kirito's harem each arc. Kirito isn't even here! Asuna isn't either! At most we may see a cameo from Sinon, but the characters of SAO that most people dislike don't show up at all! On top of that, this spin-off was written by a completely different author, the same author that wrote the Kino's Journey light novels, who had nothing to do with the main SAO series. The shitty writing from the main series won't show up here either.

Anyone who claims to instantly hate this spin-off solely because of the Sword Art Online part of the name is ignorant. Plain and simple. They don't know what they're talking about, and that ignorance may cost them the chance to have a fun experience with this show.

That's the whole point of Karen/LLENN's character though. She hates how tall she is in real life, so in GGO she can be the tiny adorable loli she always wanted to be.

I would say no to watching Sword Art Online as a whole if you haven't already. SAO isn't as irredeemably awful as some people say, but it's still a flawed series that only got as popular as it did because it was one of the very first "gamers taken/trapped in a virtual world" anime, a genre that has produced many better shows since then.

If you want to watch anything from SAO to supplement this spin-off or have something to compare it to, watch the first arc of season 2, which is when Kirito goes into Gun Gale Online, the VR game where this spin-off takes place. That can provide some more background and insight into the game they're playing in the spin-off and what it's like. It's also generally considered one of the best (or least bad, depending on how you look at it) arcs in the series.

Nah, not really. Most of what's been covered so far in the series isn't very good, so to speak. There are some events from the main series that explains how things are in the in-story world in general, but they're not really necessary to know.

But if you're interested, the only parts of SAO (with Kirito) I consider to be good are Progressive (standalone reboot-ish LN), Mother's Rosario (main LN volume 7, season 2 ep 18+), and Alicization (main LN volume 9+, season 3). The Ordinal Scale movie is also alright, I guess.

I don't know about the quality of the light novels because I don't read LN's at all, but I thought the high points of the anime were the early part of the first arc (before bad writing killed it), the GGO arc, and the Ordinal Scale movie. I thought the Mother's Rosario arc was "meh", not necessarily bad, but not that great either.

Hell, I actually think Ordinal Scale was the best thing we've had in the SAO anime so far, because it also trimmed out some of those problems I mentioned with the main series. Kirito wasn't OP as fuck just because he was the protagonist and he actually had to work to improve himself, and the movie also minimized the relationship drama. Hell, the new girl introduced in the movie, Yuna, was closer to liking Asuna than she ever was to being a new addition to Kirito's harem.

If you're confused or getting mixed signals from this discussion, let me put this another way: Sword Art Online is both the most overrated anime and the most underrated anime of this generation at the same time. It's extremely polarizing. Most of its haters say it's irredeemable trash with no redeeming qualities, while most of its fans hail it as one of the greatest anime of all time. In reality, it's neither. It's a solid, above-average series, with some glaring flaws, that can still be enjoyed quite a bit if you can look past those flaws. But very few people who watch the show see that middle ground, and they either see "it's amazing" or "it's shit" without looking at the other side.

If you want to give it a chance to see for yourself, then go for it. Having friends who also like it might help you enjoy it more as well.

Well, the LN is a bit of a mixed bag, I'd say.
The parts that concern the game mechanics and stuff are fairly detailed and you can actually understand the things Kirito has to do to get to where he is (except the dual blades BS, of course) and he's not portrayed as an overly nice guy like in the anime. But on the other hand, Aincrad I and Fairy Dance has him rambling on about Asuna 25% of the time, which kinda makes it all about him and Asuna with everything else in the background.
