You feel sluggish halfway through the day and want to get a nap in. How long do you take one for?

Over 30 minutes but under 2 hours. Once it starts going over 2 hours, that's not really a nap any more that's just normal sleeping. Also I'm tempted to narrow the window to maybe 40 minutes to an hour, especially when napping on a couch.

Depends if its during a work day or not. In which case Id say 0hrs, cause you almost tend to feel sluggish and unproductive afterwards. Although Ive heard that 25 minutes is the optimal power nap but I disagree.

The existing science seems to imply that 90 minutes is ideal. Anything less and you're not really getting enough rest to mean much, while anything more and your body starts to shift into long-term sleep mode, which will leave you feeling even more tired and sluggish after waking up than you did before.

Oh, man... I will do anything in my power to avoid a nap.

Any nap that is too short leaves me feeling laggy, sluggish, energy deprived, and possibly even more tired.

Any nap that lasts for the right amount to not feel tired anymore totally fucks my sleep schedule when I'm actually supposed to go to sleep at night.

I don't nap much as naps tend to disturb my normal sleep cycle but when I do 90 minutes is best as that's how long it takes me to complete a sleep cycle. Anything longer/shorter than that and I tend to fall into a deep sleep cycle that makes me feel really groggy when I wake up from it unless I've had at least 6 hours sleep.

I'm also a person who can take a 3-5 hour "nap", feel refreshed, and still sleep 8-12 hours at my normal bedtime later. I like sleep.

napping is bullshit for me, i always end up more tired than if i just hadn't napped at all.

i've tried everything, whether it's 90 minutes for a full sleep cycle, 20 minutes for a power nap, or even just "until i feel like waking up." it never works

20 minutes; 30 minutes at most for a power nap.

More than that it'll be a full-blown sleep that can make you feel even worse upon awakening.

If I feel tired and I have nothing to do for a while, I just set my alarm for the time when I must get up (to get to an event or something), and if I naturally wake up earlier, that's a bonus. That does mean that sometimes I fall asleep for 3 or 4 hours in the middle of the day. >_>

I never try to sneak naps at work, though. I suspect that even if I didn't get caught, I'd get woken up ahead of time by some noise and then feel more tired than before I went to sleep.

Basically, and this is an extremely short version, having a quick nap can reduce levels of certain chemicals that cause you to feel sluggish; caffeine, in addition to being a stimulant binds to the same receptors as those chemicals but doesn't make you feel sluggish, and prevents those other chemicals from acting on your nervous system when they do build it.

So they combine in an interesting way.

interesting.

i've tried all kinds of different varying amounts of time, but i've never considered this.

when do you drink the caffeine? is it like something you want to drink right before napping, then the goal is to wake up with a burst of energy?

Good question. Yes, right before. If the caffeine kicks in, it's going to be harder to get some rest.
