Rules are that it has to be an immediate sequel, so can't say Final Fantasy 4 over 1 or 2, and would have to be markedly improved for 3... or whatever.

I'll start with Lufia 2, which took mediocre lameness and turned it into the best RPG on the SNES.

Dynasty Warriors 3

One could argue that the second game was an improvement over the first due to a genre shift, but DW3 was literally just DW2 with a massive graphics overhaul, additional characters, new movesets for pre-existing characters, items, weapon levels, new stages....

DW2 while still fun, is super barebones. Whereas DW3 is literally DW2, but stuffed to the brim with content and it introduced a whole bunch of mechanics that became mainstays within the series.

I mean, even the character models(aside from a few exceptions) and music are the same.

Not exactly a mainstream popular game, but Riven: The Sequel to Myst > Myst. It has a much larger, more detailed world, with many more complicated puzzles and a better story. The main problem with Riven is that some of the puzzles can't be solved with logic. You literally have to get lucky and/or use a walkthrough to solve them.

2nd gen Pokemon. While it still had a lot of issues that later games addressed, it fixed the worst of gen 1's problems: Wrap no longer made it impossible to act until the opponent decided to do something else. You could actually act on the turn you woke up from Sleep.

Psychic types werent immune to ghost. Steel and Dark types resolved numerous balance issues (mostly caused by Psychic type). New moves with the Dragon, Bug and Ghost type that actually made using them meaningful. The game would tell you the power of moves. 100% accuracy actually mean 100% accuracy.

Focus Energy and Dire Hit actually increased critical chance, compared to gen 1 where they reduced it due to a bug. Moves like Gust and Karate Chop were given appropriate types for their intended use (both were Normal type in gen 1. Gust became Flying and Karate Chop became Fighting)

Time based mechanics, a huge number of new Pokemon, entirely new region, and of course the entire Kanto region...

And many many more features. It was a staggeringly ambitious game, and im proved upon gen 1 in every way.

I loved the hell out of 2, but I honestly don't feel it is that big of an improvement over the original. I mean yea they added a password system and a difficulty setting (which they removed in later games) and upped the number of levels to 8, but other then that it was largely the same game just more polished.

While I mostly agree with you, I really only brought it up because usually a ton of people bring it up in this type of thread.

Though I think it's the level of polish that sets it apart for most people. The first one feels very half-assed in a lot of ways, to me.

U1 had better storytelling, a more compelling narrative, and the shorter time-frame gave the adventure a greater feel. Plus the eventual enemies were a lot creepier and the campy Eddie Raja might be my favorite Uncharted antagonist. The one knock against it is the gunplay, since the difficulty was a lot more punishing in U1. Even the hardest difficulty in U2 felt like a cakewalk by comparison.

tbh, Gen 2 didn't so much feel like an improvement as it felt like a patch (ie, cleaning up numerous bugs and design flaws, in addition to adding new types). Gen 2 to 3 was when the game really seemed to undergo the defining changes, since they moved from stat exp to EVs, added abilities, etc. Not to mention double battle mechanics, which has more or less become the standard for Pokemon tournaments.
