I tried Zestria out, and I just couldn't get into it. I'm just not a huge fan of the battle system for Tales, and the pace is such a slog.

I liked Zestiria's cast. Nothing particularly unique, but they had great chemistry and the banter and skits were really good.

The plot is zzz though. Village boy discovers he is the Chosen One, does 4 elemental dungeons, saves world. is this 1995

The plot tried to be edge with the "no one can see Seraphs but the Shepherd" crap, but it broke its own rules sometimes. The concept of Hellions/Seraphs just isn't elaborated on well enough. The characters, OTOH, were quite decent. Not as good as Berseria's, but enjoyable and much better than the last few Tales.a

77. Brutal Legend
Original Release: 2009
Developer: EA
Platform: XB360

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VF2T-ApC5TA" data-time="

I don't have much to say about Brutal Legend either, because I played it all the way back in 2009 and forgot about it. Tim Schafer can be quite a genius sometimes. With this, he creates an open world based entirely on metal/hard rock, and likens a character to Jack Black and has him voice him as the main. He even gets some famous people to voice the other characters, like Tim Curry, Lemmy Kilmister (RIP), Ozzy, and Rob Halford of Judas Priest.

Brutal Legend had this weird RTS mechanic that comes out of nowhere about a quarter into the game and is quite prevalent till the end. It was a little confusing to learn but nothing terrible. Problem is, this game was never advertised as an RTS prior to its release. We all thought it was going to be a sandbox/GTA-like action based on classic 70s, 80s and 90s metal. It still is, but it just has that catch. I blame EA, obviously, who probably didn't think the game would sell as well if the RTS portions of the game were known.

I heard there's a sequel coming out, though!

Sorey was bad as a serious character (heroic hero who cares) but in skits and stuff, he was adorably derp

I liked Mikleo though. Tsunderes are hit-or-miss but he did it well. It helped that I couldn't stop imagining him as meisnewbie.

76. Rock Band 2
Original Release: 2008
Developer: Harmonix
Platform: XB360

Ha, immediately after Brutal Legend I rank Rock Band 2. What are the odds (even Painkiller shows up here). Anyway, this is a game that would most definitely be DLC or a mini-expansion in 2018, but 10 years ago it was fine to release it as a standalone product and call it a sequel. I can't even remember what the new features were that they added, other than a brand new tracklist.

I'd probably give Rock Band 1 the edge in terms of which game has better songs, but only by a small margin. It's no question that RB2 probably has the better music, but RB1 (also on this list) has the nostalgia factor. I loved getting together with a group of friends and binging Rock Band 1 when it had that novelty factor. We'd each have a role. I wasn't doing this as much anymore when RB2 came out.

Also, this game was not worth $59.99 for the game only.

You know, for an RPG on a Nintendo console, I'm surprised this game doesn't get talked about as much as all the others. But that could be due to the horrible voice acting. It sounds like the localization team skipped out on hiring professional voice actors and decided to do it themselves. Big mistake. This shit is worse than SotN, Resident Evil, Grandia, etc. At least those game were laughably bad, here it's grating. The plot is actually pretty good at times but unfortunately the VA takes that all the way. You can turn it off, but then everything is just awkward.

I actually like ARF's plot and world, as it goes into quite a bit of depth. It really does feel like an early to mid-2000s JRPG, that ultimately came out at the end of the decade. The plot can also be easily compared to a Tales story, but better. I liked all the playable characters (if you take away the VA from them) and the antagonists were also quite good. There were some great, memorable moments scattered throughout the plot and the final boss was surprising. The world design is also exceptional. Towns are HUGE and look beautiful, and the music that accompanies them is well made.

ARF fails in the combat section, though. All the battles are pretty much simple cakewalk - hit auto or attack and you win. Boss battles, on the other hand, are brutal. Bosses have a shitload of HP and consistently use their super moves to kill you fast. In order to get through them, you either have to grind a LOT (for almost every boss) or trial-and-error your strategies until you get lucky and manage to win. One boss in particular had a party wipe by petrifying your entire party at the beginning of battle. What made it worse is that his dungeon had no save points (and plenty of spelunking and story). That's some cheap Baten Kaitos shit right there. I hate the term and the comparison as I mentioned before, but this is like the Dark Souls of JRPGs. It's a shame, too, because if it wasn't for the unbalanced combat and the horrible localization, this game would be ranked much, much higher.

74. World of Final Fantasy
Original Release: 2015
Developer: Square Enix
Platform: PS4

A little bit of crying shame. This game is actually pretty damn good on the gameplay level. Feels like a decidedly old-school JRPG with a modern touch. It's also got chibi famous FF characters and an interesting plot. I don't know the rest, as I only got halfway through. I kept dropping it and coming back to it, and it's still sitting on my PS4 front page. I can't say I'm not interesting in finding out about what happens to Rayne and Leyn or whatever their names are.

Now imagine if Jar Jar Binks was turned into a Final Fantasy character, and gained a fairly prominent role. Because World of FF does exactly that: Tama, the mascot companion that's with you the entire game is the most annoying Final Fantasy character ever designed. Hell, possibly one of the most irritating characters in any game, period. She's up there with Lymle. She's got the same stupid verbal tics CONSTANTLY, thoughout the WHOLE game. What made this worse is that there are other characters just like him! In fact, many of the NPCs in this game that help you and that are not classic FF characters are TERRIBLY annoying. Even the two main characters have annoying personality traits. The girl makes fun of the boy, and the boy is rather stupid. These are probably meant to make you laugh but they do nothing but make the girl seem like a complete bitch and the boy to seem like he's about to fall off the spectrum. The only reason this game isn't down hanging out with Star Ocean 4 is because the combat, pacing, and overall game design turned out to be fun and quite charming.

Maybe this was designed to get your kids to play Final Fantasy, but the problem is the game is bloated with various different systems and mechanics that I've had to look up the trillions of tutorials several times to attempt to understand what I was doing, and it's still complicated to this day. I guess...you gotta play it while you're stoned.

It's a decent enough concept but I had to refer to tutorials several times to get an idea of what I was doing, and that's never a good thing.

73. Indigo Prophecy
Original Release: 2005
Developer: Quantic Dream
Platform: XB360

I bought this on Live Marketplace when I desperately wanted to play something, and it's still the only Quantic Dream game I've played. Don't remember much of the plot, though, but I do remember it was interesting. Especially the main character's (Lucas?) plotline. However, I only made it through about 2/3s of the game before I got stuck at some puzzle I think and gave up. I heard the plot gets wacky towards the end, but I'll probably watch a YouTube video to finish it up.

Back in the day games like this were quite a novelty because they allowed visionaries and developers the ability to tell a compelling story through the video game medium. Then Telltale started coming out with shit and visual novels became big and Quantic Dream continued to release games. I don't ever see their games ranked so highly anymore. I wonder if maybe David Cage should stick to releasing his stories as live action TV shows. Hell, he could have found a way to connect Heavy Rain and Indigo Prophecy to one world and make them each into one season. Netflix would eat that shit up.

72. Horizon: Zero Dawn
Original Release: 2017
Developer: Guerrilla
Platform: PS4

Another controversial pick! I actually never see much negativity about this game. Part of the reason I ranked it so low is because I went into it immediately after finishing up with The Witcher 3, so you could say I was a little burned out with open world. That said, HZD's open world is breathtakingly beautiful and vastly detailed. It's not that fun to explore, from my experience with it, at least. I haven't picked the game back up after quitting out of frustration, but maybe I will someday.

There's a steep learning curve to actually be able to take down the hulking machines, and more often than not you'll get killed. In order to actually survive you'll need to master the weird tools you can buy or find throughout the game, but to be honest I'd rather whack and shoot and kill the enemy rather than disarm them and trap them and make them trip over wires and shit. The game also relies on launching projectiles which is an incredibly annoying mechanic in any third person open world game that doesn't typically involve guns or bows as a primary weapon.

Worse yet, there are tons of materials and items and herbs you can gather and find throughout but you can only carry 20 items! Keep in mind that you need these materials to be able to trade them for new equipment and upgrade your gear, tools, etc. For the record, you can carry literally hundreds of things in TW3 before you reach the weight limit, and here you're strictly limited. This forces extra inventory micromanagement on you which is never fun. I'm not sure if the item limit ever increases, but it's sure as hell annoying.

71. Ninja Gaiden Black
Original Release: 2005
Developer: Tecmo
Platform: XB360

Another Live Marketplace buy here. I decided to check out the original NG after loving NG2 (also on this list). I found Black to be much harder, but more on the level of frustration rather than tension and excitement. Can we call Nioh the spiritual successor to the 2000s NG games yet?

Black oozes with style. I love Ryu Hayabusa as a protagonist and each stage felt unique. I just...could not stand the difficulty that much, especially dying on the same boss and returning all the way back to the last checkpoint. Alma was a freaking bitch and that's where I gave up. Maybe I should check out Sigma.

70. The Wolf Among Us
Original Release: 2013
Developer: Telltale
Platform: iPad

To this day this is the only Telltale game I've stuck with; everything else I quit early on in the first episode. I've never heard of this comic and I didn't know anything about it, so getting introduced to this via a Telltale visual novel was pretty cool. I managed to stick it out to the very end despite having to wait a few months for every episode to get released, and I enjoyed most of it.

As far as the material goes, I like how there are many, many references to various fairy tales but it's set in an "adult" world, with the big bad wolf and characters like Red Riding Hood, Beauty and the Beast, etc. high on drugs, committing murder and prostitution, and overall telling you to fuck off. Call it edgy but I found it fun and a breath of fresh air. It's like if the movie Cool World was never meddled by executives and came out the way Bakshi originally envisioned it. The center of the plot involved a murder mystery that the Bigsby wolf (main character) has to solve. Problem is, everyone sorta hates this grizzled old detective and there are various individuals getting in his way or straight up trying to kill him. I love me some murder mystery, so the plot itself was quite good. I could care less for QTE's, which the "fights" were chock full of, but to each his own.

Oh, and this is one of only two games on the list that I played entirely on the iPad. Can you guess what the other one is?

69. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Original Release: 2011
Developer: Bethesda
Platform: XB360

I tried to like Skyrim, especially after loving Fallout 3, but I just could not get into the world it was set in. Going from apocalyptic wasteland to swords and sorcery wasn't exactly my cup of tea. On top of that, I had to quit my playthrough because I ran into some serious bugs, culminating in me turning into a vampire and everyone trying to kill me everywhere I went. Out of options, I decided to start over and concentrate on the main plot.

But that's exactly the problem that I have with open world games. There's too much to do, and I have a little bit of OCD so if I focus on one path (the main story in this case) I feel like I'm missing out on pretty much everything. It kills the pacing of the game for me. TW3 is the only game I didn't really have a problem with because the main quests could be done in different orders. Skyrim's world is large, vast, and mostly boring.

68. Resident Evil 5
Original Release: 2009
Developer: Capcom
Platform: XB360

RE5 would be a lot lower if it wasn't for co-op. My roommate and I played the shit out of this game, and actually got to the very last chapter entirely on co-op. I've heard that fans dislike RE5 because of less focus on survival horror and more on action. I mostly disagree-- I found the setpieces and action sequences exhilarating, and the boss battles were a ton of fun. As far as plot goes, I don't really get the entire story of the franchise as I've only played bits and pieces of RE2, most of RE4, and most of RE5. RE4 was mostly standalone, while this game ties into to the others. Oh well, whatever. Co-op is too much fun.

67. Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction
Original Release: 2007
Developer: SCEA
Platform: PS3

Although the game came out in 2007, I played it seven years later in 2014. The fourth game in the series felt a little off...I don't know why, but it felt like the missions and planets were not a impeccably designed as they were in Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal. Planets were mostly empty and small, with a few enemies and battles taking place here and there, and most of it involved going on fetch quests.

I dunno, I would say I grew out of the series, but I loved the recent remake on PS4. I guess Tools of Destruction was more like GTA4 -- brand new console and future graphics, but a step back in actual game design.

66. Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
Original Release: 2009
Developer: Nintendo
Platform: DS

Superstar Saga had the best overworld, feeling more like a Zelda map with lots to find and do that opens up as you progress and acquire new abilities. I was saddened that no other Mario and Luigi game was able to come up with a cool world map like that. Bowser's Inside Story world is small and rather straightforward. The game is also oddly paced. You don't reach the Toad Town until halfway through the game.

I liked the Bowser inside sections as well as the improved combat, which wasn't nearly as ridiculous and overlong as this game's successor.

Problem is, Nintendo thought it would be a great idea to use the "blow in the microphone" gimmick which is absolute shit. In one Giant Bowser battle, you have to blow as hard as you can to defeat a train. If you don't, you'll probably lose. This is where I gave up. I tried multiple times, and I just couldn't do it. I was also extremely frustrating and never wanted to blow on anything ever again.

65. Shadow Complex
Original Release: 2009
Developer: Epic Games
Platform: XB360

Shadow Complex is among one of the first Metroidvanias I've played that wasn't Metroid or Castlevania, and it was actually pretty good! Metroidvanias saturate the market these days but back in 2009, this was a fresh little gem that would give fans of Castlevania: SotN what they want (SotN was release on the marketplace two years prior, and Harmony of Despair the year after).

The story is absolutely ridiculous but you're not here to play it for plot. You play as a Nathan Drake-ish guy (Nolan North also voices him) who is out backpacking with his girlfriend when she gets kidnapped and he falls through a hole to discover a top secret underground military base up to some shady shit. This place is HUGE and you'll explore almost every nook and cranny.

I do wish it was designed more like SotN though with more abilities/power-ups and boss battles. There were only a small handful of bosses to fight, and the final battle was more of a royale. There was also a lack of a central villain. It's just...these guys are bad news and that's it. Oh, and the game pretty much has no music whatsoever, which is lame.

Still, it was fun powering up Nathan Drake and playing around with the awesome tools and power-ups.

64. Echoes of Aetheria
Original Release: 2016
Developer: Dancing Dragon Games
Platform: PC

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTTp_VqEZdw" data-time="

Recall Skyborn, an RPG Maker release I have on this list already. Echoes of Aetheria is the follow-up, and it does everything better.

For one, that floating city the entire Skyborn takes place in? This game takes place in the same world, and that city if just one small part of this giant, amazing world. There's a high level of political intrigue going on as the game even starts off that way, with a wedding gone wrong. Soon, you find yourself on the run with a spunky sidekick, a princess, and two demi-human type characters.

The meat of the game is the combat. This isn't some default RPG Maker bullshit-- lots of care was given to create an original battle system. if anything, I'd compare it to Enchanted Arms, but much, much better. You can move around a small grid on the battle screen at any point, which in turn determines how much damage you will dish out or receive. All characters also have access to a wide assortment of skills, and you can set a certain amount to be actively used in battle, as well as passively.

The story is also pretty good, mainly because the writing is on point. There are plenty of twists and turns, and sometimes the game lampshades some common tropes (hero falls in love with the little sidekick and not the princess, and the princess becomes the final boss, NO JOKE).

Unfortunately, the game is heavily backloaded. What I mean is, a bunch of content was crammed into the last quarter or so of the game. There are seven chapters, and the final chapter involves long treks through multiple long dungeons, and there are also several difficulty spikes here. The game also loves repeating the same boss battles over and over. On the upside, there is PLENTY of story loaded into this back half as well, especially in the final dungeon. It's a really good plot, but it kills the pacing a bit when the earlier chapters were less involving.

Actually, I take that back, I was a little harsh to you. I can see why you would disagree based on my bottom picks, but this is a list mostly populated by JRPGs. I can't like/love every single, and as a complete JRPG fanboy I gotta have certain ones I hate. Trust me though, there are plenty of them in the top 20. If I ranked all the non-JRPGs last, there'd be some bias.

If you had asked me what I thought of FFXIII several years ago, I would have told you I absolutely hated it. But FFXIII aged rather graciously, and that's partly due to the constantly changing landscape of gaming. And partly due to FFXV, of course! FFXIII does so many things poorly. The corridor simulator, the melodrama, the story, all horrible. But it's still a game I had fun with, and still a game I took sick days for.

The game had a rather beautiful world and amazing-looking locations, such as a lake enclosed in ice, complete with awesome music. Or a giant junkyard, or a forest that constantly changes weather from sun to rain to thunder. I just wish you could explore more of these areas! The underground Lake Bresha would be a nice place to explore and take in, but it's nothing more than a straight path with frequent stops for dialogue and fights. You can't even return to any of these areas. Chapter 11's Gran Pulse was the only area you could fully explore, and I just wish the layout of this chapter was applied to all the others. In fact, this chapter seemed quite irregular. It encompasses multiple areas and creates an actual, cohesive world, whereas all the rest are just single-area locations unconnected to each other. I mean, imagine if you could fully explore Nautilus and Palumpolum, and go grind levels with tough mobs in the Gapra Whitewood. Imagine if the Vile Peaks had a hidden coliseum you can go back to at any point to fight solo or team battles. Additional content would have been very welcome and spectacular! FFX had a similar design, with many of the areas being corridors, but there was more room for exploration, and the areas were all connected rather seamlessly. Plus you can return to them whenever in case you missed something. FFXIII would have been a much better game if it was given a more nonlinear treatment.

But the story and characters are the worst part, and are downright embarrassing at times. Imagine if you're branded a terrorist and every authority figure is out to kill you and five others in the same boat as you. You're on the run, trying to escape imminent death and get out of the country to find a solution to the problem. You most definitely would not want to stop every few minutes and have a full fledged conversation with the other five about how much you hate their life choices (this is the bulk of Lightning and Snow's relationship) and how much you hate yourself.

Unfortunately, this is what FFXIII's six main characters absolutely love to do, and it gets extremely annoying by the end of the first chapter! Let me break down the characters for you:

Lightning: She's an ice bitch and if she were real nobody would ever want to hang out with her. Never smiles or cracks a joke in this game. Mostly selfish, and refuses to accept Snow and Serah's relationship (even though Snow is an idiot). Just a dull, boring character overall that doesn't really seem to grow. I haven't played Lightning Returns, but she's absent from FFXIII-2 for the majority of the game. Square is also obsessed with her, to the point of creepiness.

Snow: This freaking guy. I'm sure he got hit on the head several times growing up because he's an adult and keeps on screaming about how much of a hero he is. He does have a BSOD moment but I never really cared for his feelings from the very beginning. In the sequels he's rather boring.

Sazh: Even though he's probably the only sane person in the group, as everyone here has some serious life problems rivaling that of the tv show LOST's characters, he still makes some questionable decisions, like wanting to commit suicide because he thinks his son is never coming back.

Vanille: Annoying and gets more screen time than everyone else. She makes some weird noises in battle. I actually can't remember too much else about her, except she talks and screams a lot. She wasn't too terrible, I guess.

Fang: She would have been a good character if it weren't for her involvement with Vanille. Seriously, their backstory isn't very good.

Hope: We are NOT going to talk about Hope. He is one of the worst characters in the history of gaming and I'll just stop here.

Anyway, the story also makes little sense and feels incomplete and incoherent. The main villain's motivations are not explained, characters just randomly disappear because the game decides they really don't matter anymore. Seriously, out of three named villains of the game, one who is a prominent baddie gets offed by their leader, another shows up randomly throughout the game and disappears, and the third is trying to revive...uhhh, Orphan? The whole game they keep saying how they want to save Orphan, but then Orphan is the final boss and nobody ever mentions the whole saving part anymore. The datalog didn't explain this either. The datalog wasn't that bad. People whined about it, but it's really not that much reading , and other games do this all the time.

I suppose I should mention the combat. I loved it. Some say the game plays itself but you'll need to intervene frequently in order to get by. It got fun towards the back half of the game.

Lastly, I'm really disappointed by the way Square Enix handled FFXIII post-release. First off, they never released any updates or patches or DLC or whatnot. In their words, "it's done." That's it. Instead they opted to make sequels. It's a cocky move, for sure, because of the divisive reaction to the game. Square Enix decided not to release DLC allowing for, say, an additional scenario, or going back to Cocoon or something. Or even something small like an optional boss. I mean, c'mon. I'm positive they didn't listen to the criticism for this game. Maybe they took the bits and pieces of feedback to make FFXIII-2, but that had its own share of problems (still a better game IMO). I also believe this is where Square Enix ultimately started going downhill, as you may have surmised given this list is already chock full of Square games.

I'm sure we'll get a re-release of the FFXIII trilogy in the future. Whether or not it'll be even better as time passes, I don't know, but FFXV did it plenty of favors.

@AxemRedRanger: We're in a new tier now, I'll post a list.

62. Uncharted 2
Original Release: 2008
Developer: Naughty Dog
Platform: PS3

Everything about Uncharted 2: Among Thieves screams big budget, and Naughty Dog succeeded in that regard. This franchise is basically the video game equivalent of a modernized Indiana Jones. It's the slow, more gamey parts of the game that annoyed me enough to get me to drop the game. First is the combat, which is decent enough but you're constantly swarmed by endless mercenaries and you're constantly needing to take cover. The areas, or should I call them arenas, where you're involved in a shootout are very large and sometimes it's hard to find where to go exactly. Meanwhile you're being shot at from all directions, and grenades are being lobbed at you faster than you can breathe. A few shots will kill you, so you need to run for cover as much as possible and regenerate. Sometimes I feel like I'm playing a less fun Gears of War or another action heavy game during these parts except without the co-op.

Other times the game slows to a halt and wants you to solve a puzzle in a large room. It'll drop hints here and there, but the riddles can be irritating to solve. Especially when the rooms are big and there's no clear hint as to what you need to do exactly. I remember being stuck in that chamber in one of the earlier chapters, underneath Borneo was it? Can't remember. The game will ask you to go fetch an item, place it in a receptacle, then solve a riddle, or vice versa etc. and it really isn't fun. Sometimes it'll throw dudes at you to shoot while trying to do these riddles. I mean, the trailers for this game were fantastic, with Drake hanging off a near fallen train. But when the game drags along with these annoying but necessary sections, it shows its faults.

That didn't stop me from purchasing The Last of Us and Uncharted 4, however. Even though those games essentially use the same formula, I still found Uncharted 2 enjoyable. What it does well is the stuff you saw in the trailers -- a sprint through a moving train that spans multiple chapters, trying to escape from the falling train, escaping a helicopter across some rooftops, this stuff is fun and exciting. It's all the in-between fluff that wore me out.

FYI - I'm switching the placement of #61 and #60. #61 being switched to #60 and thus the last game in this tier would feel rather...cathartic and edgy. That, and I remember much more of it than I do of the other one.

61. LA Noire
Original Release: 2011
Developer: Team Bondi/Rockstar
Platform: XB360

LA Noire is pretty much all but forgotten now. The game came out to a modest reception and then we all found out about Team Bondi and it's likely we'll never get a sequel. It's a shame because it was a decent enough game, marred by serious production issues. Just read the article below:

https://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2011-07-05-revealed-the-internal-emails-that-provoked-whistle-blowing-at-team-bondi-blog-entry

Yeah, the game got shafted fast. It shows, too. The last third or so of the game is rushed, and the story falls apart. Other than that, the game plays like a sandbox GTA clone minus the killing of random pedestrians and prostitutes. You're a cop, and you're not allowed to do shit that cops can't do. That being said, the cases you're assigned are fun and there's a great sense of progression through most of the game. Throughout the journey we're fed bits and pieces of the main character's backstory when he was in WWII. There's some shit going down between his brothers who are also in LA but he's really just trying to go straight with the police life. You start off being traffic police, then move on to more significant cases like homicide and vice. The homicide arc involves going on multiple murders and searching for clues to find a serial killer. Then you move on to vice and all hell breaks loose. That's also when the game falls apart; you're assigned to arson immediately after that and then...the game decides to switch the main character out of the blue. This was a very jarring decision, and for the rest of the game you're playing as Kelso. The ending was also ultimately disappointing.

Still, playing through the main story was fun, although it's a shame there wasn't much to do aside from that. The city is large but everything looks similar and it's hard to remember where anything is. It just never sticks with you. All the buildings look the same and the city is largely empty aside from flavor NPCs. Despite its faults, the story was still excellent. Hell, if it wasn't for the story this game would be ranked much lower.

60. Undertale
Original Release: 2015
Developer: tobyfox
Platform: PC

Undertale is like...the oscar bait equivalent of video games. I'm sure that's now what the creator envisioned it to be, but the critics and players treated it like such. I'm still trying to figure out why this game is so dear to so many people's hearts. I just don't get it. It was good, yes. It wasn't anything better than good. Could it be the innovation/originality? The multiple playthroughs? The power to play the game without hurting anyone or anything?

Seems like this game wants you to play it multiple times to experience different paths. You either go through normally, you go through peacefully, or you go on a rampage. Now, I play JRPGs mainly for the plot, but rarely do I ever replay them. When a game is made to be replayed, that's a turnoff. It's the reason I haven't played Nier Automata yet. I know a second playthrough is going to be "different because you're playing it different!" and yadda yadda, but the bulk and story is essentially the same still, and I don't have interest in experiencing that story again just so I can fight a different final boss. I'd rather play something new. Despite being incredibly short, Undertale is made to be replayed, and I just don't care enough to do so.

So my actual playthrough in that regard was decent. The crude but cute underworld it's set in is engaging and the dialogue is (for the most part) great. There were some terrible parts with the writing, like going on a date with Skeletor (I mean wtf was that about). The Toriel and Undyne arcs were pretty good, and Flowey was an entertaining villain. The dungeon and battle music were awesome, too, actually. This game's world also had plenty of lore, enough to warrant a sequel. I did have an issue with the combat: every fight plays like some sort of minigame where in every attack you have to dodge mini-bullets or some sort of thing, it's hard to explain. This would get old fast and reminded of Mario and Luigi games where fights dragged on because of the timing mechanics. If you wanted to play the game peacefully, you can choose to let enemies go by either giving them an item (I think?) or answering questions correctly ala Persona 5's conversations with enemies. I can't stand the latter, as it boils down to a glorified guessing game that takes trial and error.

Despite this, the game is impressive for being done by just one person. I don't think it's deserving of all GOTY and indie awards it received (Stardew Valley was the better indie game of that year) but it's certainly different and special.

As B8's resident Undertale fanboy, the strength in the non-dark route is in the characters and the humor. Each character initially looks like a tired trope unless you take the chance to get to know them -- a lot like actual people. But if neither of these appeal to you, then yeah, you're not going to enjoy it very much or get why some people (read: me) adore this game so damn much.

Not that this is a bad thing! Lots of people enjoy The Last of Us, whereas I see it as a grimdark perpetual escort quest. I see why people like it, it just does nothing for me.

Another thing worth mentioning is the extreme attention to detail in Undertale, especially in its more meta-narrative aspects such as remembering things you did even if you didn't save your game / reset or random events occurring on any given playthrough. Despite being mechanically pretty simple, the use of those mechanics is clever and contribute to the overall value of the game -- though even I admit the non-boss combat gets tedious as hell sometimes.

Anyway, sorry for the wall of text. Glad you at least tried it!

59. Rock Band
Original Release: 2007
Developer: Harmonix
Platform: XB360

I can't believe this is over 10 years old now, I remember it like yesterday. Anyway, co-op is the primary reason I ranked this where it is. I remember joining three buddies and spending a few hours a night playing it. Having played GH2 and GH3 prior to Rock Band's release, I was pretty good with the guitar, and damn having a full band play through several songs was a whole lotta fun. I didn't have this luxury with RB2, but that game did have a better set list. This one also introduced me to some awesome music I've never heard of, and legitimately made me a Who fan.

58. Diablo 3
Original Release: 2013 (XB360) 2012 (PC)
Developer: Blizzard
Platform: XB360

Note that I played the 360 version, which came out a year after the original release. Thus I wasn't exposed to the auction house fiasco. My impression of Diablo 3 ended up being as a solid, pretty fun experience, although I never finished the game. I've heard Diablo/Blizzard fans say this game is the ultimate sin, but I looked past that and found it quite enjoyable for what it was.

No, it's not as good as Diablo 2. My teenage years were sometimes spent on Battle.net grinding my Barbarian and then taking on a brutal dungeon or boss while hunting for awesome loot. I grew out of this in my late 20's, unfortunately, although I still had fun playing online with this. The game was nowhere near as hard as its predecessor and rare, equippable loot was much easier to find.

My take was that folks like Undertale for:
-deconstructions of perceived genre (medium?) norms (novelty, in other words)
-catchy (simple, that is) music
-Earthbound-style presentation
-close gameplay-narrative integration *I see encouraging replayability as a byproduct of this and not a design goal in and of itself. When trash mobs tend to be isolable from the cutscene material (see the first bullet), that creates some disconnect that veterans take for granted or do not challenge. This game stops to question these actions and takes the next step to make them meaningful narratively.
-being cheap? (and, therefore, accessible)

Honestly, I didn't enjoy it that much, either. I found the true ending requirements to be a little obscure, and they wrecked the pacing.

Man, so many DISAGREEMENTS.

-I remember really digging Indigo Prophecy, but the biggest flaw was there was all this crazy stuff going on, on the screen, but you couldn't watch any of it because you had to focus on what button to press to keep it going. It's been a long time, but I definitely remember enjoiyng the story but being super disappointed by that. Ranking seems fair.

-I think you should try Horizon again later on. I don't remember inventory management being too bad, but using the different bows made the game feel really unique and cool. The trip wire bow you reference is probably the most fun bow to use! If you were burnt out on OW, not much else you can do but give it a little time before trying again.

-Wolf Among Us seems low based on your writeup. I will 100% agree with you on it being the best telltale game though. This and the first season of Walking Dead is all I've gotten through, but the uniqueness of that world made it super cool. I was also totally new to the series, and I thought they did a great job of opening that world up to a newbie.

-FF13, I also love the battle system, liked the story and a few characters, but your rank seems fair.

-I mostly agree on Uncharted. I've never found the core gameplay to be as fun as Gears of War, and the platforming always seemed like a waste of time because it's so easy outside of the occasional set piece that does it well. Puzzles were whatever. I actually did have some fun with the multiplayer on I believe Uncharted 3 though.

I disagree strongly on you comparing Uncharted to Last of Us though, a couple of core gameplay elements are similar, but the way you play the game is so far off from anything you do in Uncharted. Resource management and more stealth made for a way different experience imo.

-I really dug LA Noire back in the day, I think because it was so different than anything else at the time, even for its flaws. I'm generally a rule follower in GTA games, so it worked well for me!

-I quit Undertale pretty early in, I got really bored with it : (. I also don't like Earthbound for what its worth. Reading about "true ending requirements" makes me feel better about walking away for sure too.

-It is crazy to think about playing Rock Band with buddies now. I remember how awful the RB guitar felt, but if I recall, you could use the GH guitar, which saved the game for me. But man, I have no desire to have all that stuff hanging around near my gaming area and setting it all up when I want to play like the OLD DAYS.

57. Battlefield 1
Original Release: 2016
Developer: EA DICE
Platform: PS4

Basically 2016's FPS flavor of the year. I enjoyed my brief time with it, if only for the multiplayer. After a week or two I realized I'm not the biggest fan of random online matches based on the clientele. Dat Ballroom Blitz tho.

That said, the game has some of the best controls an FPS has ever had. The single player campaign is also a whole lotta fun. You have multiple scenarios based around WWI you get to choose from, and they're all really good. One has you partaking in Lawrence of Arabia's mission in the desert, another has a tank as its central figure.

Bit late for Undertale talk, but I liked it for two reasons. First is that it was relatively short but used its time well. There are a lot of things I find memorable about the game relative to its length, like funny or exciting moments, nice music, or cool settings. Second was that its message of inclusivity and understanding resonated with me well.

I wasn't as interested in the meta elements as much, as I'd seen similar things elsewhere, but I thought it was very solid.

I played through it from beginning to end. If a large part of the game is going through it again except either killing everyone or not killing anyone at all, then I don't even know how to classify this game. I wanted to rank it and felt it appropriate to do so because, you know, I actually finished it. "Finished" being subjective, however, since a few of you are saying it isn't complete until you replay it twice.
