61. LA Noire
Original Release: 2011
Developer: Team Bondi/Rockstar
Platform: XB360

LA Noire is pretty much all but forgotten now. The game came out to a modest reception and then we all found out about Team Bondi and it's likely we'll never get a sequel. It's a shame because it was a decent enough game, marred by serious production issues. Just read the article below:

Yeah, the game got shafted fast. It shows, too. The last third or so of the game is rushed, and the story falls apart. Other than that, the game plays like a sandbox GTA clone minus the killing of random pedestrians and prostitutes. You're a cop, and you're not allowed to do shit that cops can't do. That being said, the cases you're assigned are fun and there's a great sense of progression through most of the game. Throughout the journey we're fed bits and pieces of the main character's backstory when he was in WWII. There's some shit going down between his brothers who are also in LA but he's really just trying to go straight with the police life. You start off being traffic police, then move on to more significant cases like homicide and vice. The homicide arc involves going on multiple murders and searching for clues to find a serial killer. Then you move on to vice and all hell breaks loose. That's also when the game falls apart; you're assigned to arson immediately after that and then...the game decides to switch the main character out of the blue. This was a very jarring decision, and for the rest of the game you're playing as Kelso. The ending was also ultimately disappointing.

Still, playing through the main story was fun, although it's a shame there wasn't much to do aside from that. The city is large but everything looks similar and it's hard to remember where anything is. It just never sticks with you. All the buildings look the same and the city is largely empty aside from flavor NPCs. Despite its faults, the story was still excellent. Hell, if it wasn't for the story this game would be ranked much lower.
