The Ace of Games. Not because he is the best at them, rather he the best at playing all of them. To completion. Shine is a doctor but somehow still games 20 hours a day and goes to sporting events and wrestling. I'm convinced he evolved beyond sleep or the need for human contact. His current trophy streak is like four years. Think about that. Every single day for four years. He played at least one game long enough to get a trophy. Not one day where he has been otherwise detained or something.

Shine is Shine. I recently won a Shine Award which i am told is worth 2.4 VAPEs.

weirdly, SHINE's schtick has grown on me

board 8 used to be much more gaming-centered, but now people are preoccupied with families and jobs and arguing about politics and such. these days it's charming to have a guy who just really really loves games

It doesn't bother me since SHINE is devoid of human emotions such as empathy, love, and the need for human companionship

One of the few dudes who is still here because he loves games. He doesnt give a shit about any of us as people, and I respect that about him. His only flaw is that he tends to post spoilery images of games hes playing.

I love SHINE. He basically has all the same hobbies as me (+more because of more time) so I can speak to him about it all. Probably my favorite user in recent years, though lately I've barely been here.

He's a really skilled gamer. I've watched him stream before and I respect his methodical approach to gaming. It's also awesome that he's possibly put in more gaming hours than anyone else here while still having the discipline/management skills to work towards a good education and job. He's holding it down.

But it does feel uncomfortable when he, at times, almost delights in being mean to people - like just a few days ago when he told Pun he threw away GameStop game merch Pun sent his away.

Yeah whenever I think of Shine I don't think of the ace of games stuff I think of him making totally unnecessary posts mocking suicides and generally being wildly insensitive

Some people might think that's fine, maybe I'm just a snowflake or what have you, but an entertaining love and aptitude for games don't really compensate for that in my mind.

I once watched a stream of SHINE grinding out matches against randos for Street Fighter V online for trophies where he just kept the game on and had low light spammed nonstop.

That's pretty much the epitome of him.

I don't think you're a snowflake I just think you have a tendency to heavily focus in on negative things and not let them go.

I just reprimanded SHINE for one of the insensitive things he did like last week but it's not as though that's what he's always doing.

The Ace of Games stuff is what he's ALWAYS doing. IDK if you've ever been playing a game at the same time as him but he will go out of his way to help you or explain something in the game for you.

We're not just talking "negative things", he was a serious prick. And has been on more than one occasion. And the fact that it was more than once indicates that it's just his personality to be that way, not just one moment of misjudgement but how he is on the whole. That doesn't make him the worst person ever. The ace of games stuff, and some of his posts, are good. But my scales tip closer to dislike than like because he showed a very ugly side to his personality.

Question: if you are now disgusted by Kevin Spacey are you "focussing too much on the negative"? He's been an extremely talented, funny, charming, multi-award winning actor way more times than he's been a creepy, sexually abusive monster.

(No, I'm not directly comparing Shine and Spacey, so don't play that bullshit card - I'm comparing my perception of Shine with the public perception of Spacey. Not the same thing)

I mean it's a bad comparison whether it's direct or not, because SHINE hasn't done anything nearly as unforgivable as Spacey.

I'd say maybe I just haven't seen him be a dick as much as you have, but the general response in this topic versus your own leads me to believe that you're the outlier.

Your point seemed to be though that because SHINE in his day to day is a pretty cool guy who helps people with games, and just one or two times he was a prick, I'm being "overly negative" by focussing on those few negative incidents

My question, then - without a bad Spacey comparison - is where is the line? When is it ok to assign additional value to one or two negative things compared to generally being good over a sustained period of time?

I'd say the answer lies in your personal morals/ethics/feelings/whatever. To me, they were a series of dickish, insensitive posts that put me off him as a person because it wasn't the time or place for them. But I also remember some people finding them darkly funny and lightening the mood. Some others might like his honesty. Others might have no opinion on them. Others might find them a little insensitive but not to the same degree I did. That's fine; on that particular issue me and those people perceive things differently. Doesn't make me "better", I'm not trying to come off as high and mighty here. But I also don't think it means I focus too much on negative stuff, just that certain stuff crosses the line for me and certain stuff doesn't.

I'm pretty sure most people on this board have been unnecessarily mean or rude before. We have bad days, this is where we come to wind down and such and feelings get through. It's easier to be with the anonymity of the internet. I've been guilty of this in the past too. But I think a lot of people get a pass based on having done good deeds or being funny.

Typically, it's easier just to not harp on anything unless it's very much constant. For instance, I've never seen SHINE post anything mean. I don't go in every topic or anything, and I don't doubt that he has, but I think if he was generally as nasty as a couple people have made him out to be, I would have frankly noticed by now.

On the plus side he manages to have them while not being hypocritical and preachy about other people having them which is a definite plus!

Well the thing about that is - it didn't come off to me as "having a bad day". He made posts about how he had no respect for anyone who committed suicide then mocked it twice. In the actual topic, not later in some more isolated discussion. That's just...bad, no?

I don't even hate Shine, I just think that shit gets glossed over a lot when to me it was pretty beyond the pale. When he does funny or good stuff it's in the back of my mind. "Yeah, that was a pretty funny post, but, y'know, mocked GFK's suicide." hard to get around that. It's my deal.

While I have no personal beef with SHINE, I have heard stories of his more...spoilery moments. That kind of disregard for people's feelings certainly, imo anyway, isn't really the type of thing that I would imagine someone having a bad day would do.
