For me it would have to be Mega Man Legends and Digimon World. I feel like the sound and music for both games really helped solidify my love for them along with being the first large and interactive gaming worlds I experienced. I actually have the Apple market music and the music when you enter the Flutter on my phone. Same thing with File City and Native Forest

Holy crap, SaGa Frontier.

It's unfinished and needs a ton of polish, but there are so many things I love about it. The characters, the sidequests, the lightbulb system, the music...one of my favorite RPGs of all time for sure, I've played through all seven quests a ton of times.

Cyberia - old DOS game that's honestly pretty bad, but also very unique in its mechanics. weird, early 3D, uncanny valley look. you're free to explore with your character in various areas, and can find creative ways to kill yourself, which I found extremely entertaining as a kid. the rest of the game (fly-by rail) is pretty bad, though.

Some PS1 survival horror games, Countdown Vampires, Martian Gothic, OverBlood. That's a style that will appeal to me even if they're subpar.

Might be stretching the definition of average a bit, but Jak 2 and Super Mario Sunshine.

Saga Frontier is a great choice.

I'll also put forward Wild Arms 4. Objectively the game doesn't really break new ground and it's easily lost in the sea of JRPGs for the PS2, but I really loved that game. Its battle system was terrific, blending a nice little infusion of strategy into the FFX-inspired CTB formula, and it's just so wonderfully paced; I find most JRPGs waste lots of time but WA4 was fast-moving throughout; the plot was always moving forward and you only rarely go a significant chunk of time without more of the fun gameplay.

Nice to see more SaGa Frontier fans here. I wanted to write angry letters to the magazine that gave it a bad review and said it was on santa's "naughty" list.

I also like Phantasy Star 3 more than I should. I really want to see a full remake of it (but that will never happen) It had some interesting ideas with the whole generation system.

I think I actually first discovered GameFAQs BECAUSE of SaGa Frontier. I had the BradyGames guide but it didn't go in depth with all the combos and techs like some of the FAQs here did.

oh man when I first read the topic I had no idea but just now I realized I'm actually replaying my answer the last few days

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearer

the combat is pretty basic literally throwing shit at enemies for the most part, it's full of absolutely broken/buggy minigames, excruciating achievements that test your patience (I just played hide and seek with 34 fucking lilty children)

... but I legitimately love this game a lot

cast is fantabulous and I somehow enjoy all the things you do in this game, and just the world and everything

and yeah Layle is the greatest final fantasy protag by far, nobody else comes close
