The rationale, as I understand it, is that male gay pornstars do not go through the same testing as straight men who do porn because gay men don't have to get tested since gay porn always requires use of a condom. Because of this, the belief is that it's easier to catch something from a man who does gay porn as a result.

I'm confused. I thought the industry that high up was supposed to be pretty adament about testing regularly. My assumption was that there was a test before every new shoot. Also, is there a reason she couldn't request a fresh STD test? That seems less homophobic than a pure refusal and it would have been better for him and her both. That might not be PC enough either -- just spitballing -- but that could have been better for him and her both this time.

Is there a parallel we can draw between pornography partners fearing STDs and athletes fearing diseases? They're both contact-entertainment with health concerns. Both industries try to avoid outbreaks spreading through their work, and I'm not sure where they've each drawn their lines when the individuals' well-being feels legitimately at risk. Like, if an athlete says "I'm not wrestling that guy because his country has a measles outbreak," I don't know how history has handled that situation. Maybe there's some parallel to learn from...?

well... yeah, i'd get her point there. condoms don't prevent all STDs and the one to worry about the most, HIV, is ridiculously common among gay/bi men. as in, over 2/3 of all new HIV infections come from gay and bi men. if they ain't getting tested even more it makes sense why she's uncomfortable, which is more than enough for her to say no.

So this sounds to me that all professional porn needs to be held to an equal standard for their employees. Condoms protect but tests catch -- that's not the same and it unfortunately contributed to fear like this.

Pick condoms, pick tests, pick both, pick condoms specifically for anal across all genders -- whatever, but if this is true then it sounds like an industry issue to fix.

nah, if you tell someone to go kill themselves, charging them with manslaughter is way, way too harsh. it's obviously rude and insulting but shouldn't be illegal, that's crossing a different line. it's one thing to purposefully, continuously instigate and convince someone into doing it with the clear explicit knowledge that they actually are doing it. the girl who did that got hit with manslaughter, though a very short sentence. that's a very, very different situation from what would just be people saying rude, offensive things in a brief moment. that should never be illegal.

in this case the tragedy supposedly begins with politics, that's the source behind her getting bullied in the first place. this is assuming that's the cause and that everything else is true, we don't know the reason for her death yet. this just immediately took the reins as "THIS IS WHY SHE KILLED HERSELF" as the story blew up. assuming you believe this played a major enough factor, politics is all around this one: it's the exact opposite of a guy killing himself because he was shamed and bullied over his desire to fuck a dude. that would also be political to start.

it's not, no. especially now that twitter's 280 characters. there's plenty of room to explain the position or just add in the lack of testing, which seems pretty ridiculous. those who know the basic STD numbers will be fine with what she said but those who try to ignore them/deflect them/deny them/are ignorant of them won't get what she means.
